I've been meaning to try AMD's "Gaming Evolved" (Raptr) app to see how it handles recording.
It offers a Shadowplay-like ability to record, stream, instant-replay your game with less of a performance hit than conventional means.
First I wanted to try recording the BF4 Test server since that's what I was playing (the maps for the next DLC are great!) but turns out... It doesn't work. The App only works on games that are part of the list offered by the devs, and the CTE isn't supported.
So, I tried different programs and got lots and lots of shitty result. (DXtory crashes the game, Bandicam sucks, etc)
I ended up getting some good results with Mirillis Action! Quality was good, performance was good, but the filesize is HUGE and the file wasn't recognized by most software. Instead of encoding the video with the usual SUPER or Handbrake I had to use Mediamonkey.
It got much smaller, quality was still good aaaannnddd... Youtube ruined it:
Blurry, colors were crushed.
Btw: the server is in Normal mode. I say this since the next videos are in Hardcore.
After, I went back to BF4 proper and tried GVR. I started with the default high quality settings: 1080p, 60fps, something like 50mbit/s
Obviously the file was huge and since my bandwith is limited (damn joke) I once again decided to make the video smaller. Worked well, quality remains great aaannnddd youtube ruins it.
Shitty colors, blurry, yadda yadda
I figured I had to try sending the videos fully uncompressed to Youtube directly. So instead, I recorded the game with GVR at a much lower bitrate to see how it did. Surprisingly enough, quality wasn't that bad even after I went from 50 to 10mbit/s. I also made some more tests with 10, 15 and 20.
I uploaded a 1080p@60 video on Youtube aaannnddd... Not that bad.
It's not amazing or anything, but it's okay. Most of the finer details were lost, but it worked well.
Still, I wanted to try reducing the FPS when I record to 30 and increase the quality of the video. The result... Meh. GVR doesn't do well with 30fps.
I already had a small issue at 60: the sound is not properly synched in the video.
At 30 tho, not only is the sound worse, but the video is FAR from being smooth.
Overall, not a bad start. I know they're planning to keep improving GVR. They'll also add Mantle support, which is nice. I had to record the vids in DX11, and I didn't enjoy the performance loss.
