As a software dev, I'm excited for Win10. Hopefully we can get everyone on xp/7 on board to upgrade for free. No more designing websites for IE8 or using <.net 4.0.
Yeah, i remember writing tone of extra code in intranet applications just to keep compatibilty.... that was a real mess. However, companies don't like to upgrade that fast because of money and also compatibility with certain apps or hardware.

The "Xbox on Windows 10" thingy is misleading its basically streaming, i guess its cool for someone who actually has an Xbox one but for those of us who don't have it its nothing to be excited about....
That feature is exclusively designed for Xbox One owners and not for the general users. It wouldn't make much sense if that weren't the case unless MS wants to kill there own product. However, the XB1 as it seems is going to turn into a sort of "steam machine" instead of a console since is going to have Windows 10 installed as well. That's the reason they said that windows store apps and games from the store are going to run on it and even office(he stated that office on the XB1 makes little sense tho.). The idea however is to connect all devices from there eco-system while having the exact same OS which is great.

That feature is making a big buzz in the internet right now and lots of PS4 users are pissed since the PS4 has remote play which is a great feature. The difference here however is that most people actually own a PC or windows device rather than a Vita or specific Xperia devices which makes it a killer feature. Also from tests it seems like that feature is going to work a lot better as well but only time will tell.

Now the part missed in there event is the fact that after the XB1 has Windows 10 installed and supporting DX12 it could *theoretically" run PC games as there is nothing stopping it except for high specs requirement on newest games. The DX12 example shows a lot since games running DX11 will hit there limit easily after adding more complex stuff and with it requiring higher specs. With DX12 that doesn't seem to be the case as it effectively use CPU and GPU allowing far more on the exact same specs but that's something to be seen.

Hmmm this is actually quite interesting and weird at the same time.

"People ask about the streaming in the opposite direction--can I stream from my PC to my Xbox?--and I'll just say it's something that we're really looking at"
Wondering now what exactly they have in mind... streaming is OK but basically it could run some PC games as there is absolutely nothing stopping them from doing so except for high requirements on some games.

Streaming TO Xbone would be actually troublesome, as PCs lack native realtime recording (not just permanent like Shadowplay/NVenc, even time-limited to when the Xbox app requests PC streams). The most convenient options to leverage for that may be Steam's streaming system, followed by Nvidia and ATI's, but I dont see it happening anytime soon.

Going the other way around is troublefree thanks to the uniformity of Xbone SKUs, all compatibility variations are handled by the Xbox app.
I'm almost sure that recording this time is implemented in Windows itself or DirectX 12. Unlike in the past that was never a feature of windows but now it seems to be integrated in the system which could work better than third party ones including steam.

Gimme dem glasses, gonna wow some clients with that holographic swag.
Now imagine playing games using those glasses. I can see myself lying on my bed with a huge holographic screen and streaming my games to it. Now that would be beyond awesomeness!

Now imagine walking by hooker avenue, with convenient fee holocards overlayed on top of people, with their lastest Facebook status updates, credit and sanitory check.
LOL! it's going to be interesting to see how it works and how they support it in games. In the other hands i'm still skeptical on how good is gonna be. Of course those promo videos always show how awesome and smooth everything works but in reality it may not be the case.

Apart from that i'm really curious to see how much DX12 will improve things. Today i was watching Apple's event from last year and was checking about there new api called "Metal". The main idea is to avoid the overhead created by OpenGL as having better control over the hardware alone isn't enough since the rendering still happens in OpenGL. That's interesting because the PS4 use OpenGL as far as i know for most of the current rendering which means Sony will have to work on something quick to respond against MS and DirectX. If we can take Apple's demo of the Metal api and compare it to the OpenGL one the gains are huge which translated to this scenario would give an improvement to the weaker console basically ending with this:

DirectX VS OpenGL

There is also one thing that puzzles me right now and that's the fact that all XB1 will get Windows 10 installed. That would be quite interesting because since the XB1 is a x86 machine i will pretty much have a HTPC rather than a console. Judging by there statements its going to be the same windows so will i have the same features? that's a questiong that is keeping me busy right now.

@ruantec look up OpenGL Next. Its going to be similar to DX12 and AMDs Mantle.
Yeah, but as far as i know it's going to break compatibilty with current OpenGL implementation. Also what's the current status of the development??? i haven't followed that much. Hope it could benefit Sony then after they start to implement it. Its going to be interesting to see how it performs against directX 12 or mantle. So far there is not much available on the net about it except for the features they are targeting to implement.

It has zero useful purposes in games, except very niche ones o the kind of Ingress. MS set a very dangerous precedent with Kinext-only Xbox One, and this proves they did not give up the concept, and it may be forcefully bound to future releases of Windows ('always-listening' Cortana is already, now we're looking at 'always-streaming').

I'm surprised noone saw it as it was: a commercial implementation meant to make the idea of centralized computer systems being made and allowed to scan reallife to finetune their object/people detection routines (basically crowdsourced datamining dependant on adoption, even minimal - like by just employees and state agents, albeit the model should already be developped enough by the time they use it, otherwise it'd only be scanning, and with the using existing dataset)
I didn't meant games fully using it but probably adding optional support for those who end purchasing it. Something like extra stuff where you can read walkthroughts, tip and tricks or just change settings etc. while having a huge hologram screen to play the streamed games. Something like that would be awesome just as much as it would be having a hologram of Orchid sitting beside me in my living room while playing KI lol!

The minecraft demo shown on the promo video could be a small example.

You Need a developer account to be able to submit apps to the Windows store like i do. That's not just the only Problem tho. once you submit an app you have to wait up to 3-4 days sometimes which makes the whole process really annoying. I released an update of the @ruanTuberHD a while back because YouTube changed few things and Videos stopped working and it took 3 days just to get a mail telling me that i forgot to add something to my app which got rejected. I had to fix the Problem, re-upload the app and wait another 3 days until the update was up.

Silly........

However..... that's the smallest of the Problems. The biggest Problem are the limitations you as developer have as there is so much you can't Access or do unlike Desktops apps which has almost 0 limitations. Last but not least you have to go to the process of creating Images and Icons for your application using a bunch of different sizes. As if that was all you have to add tons of descriptions and a hell bunch of other things that take you up to an hour to complete at times, that if you are fast enough.

Piraters will still be able to upgrade easily. MS will just take some measures that as usual never really worked. MS priority this time is make sure a hell bunch of people upgrade to Windows 10 so that alone benefits piraters.

I have to say @Ruan is right on this one, i mean if they cared that much they would deploy a more drastic protection, but they just do the bare minimum so that nobody can say that they haven't "tried".
Exactly, when you check the current Windows 8.1 activation app you can clearly see how much they actually care. For instance the crack/app is written in .net so they can even easily dissasembly the app and see what the author did. As if that was all the app installs just like any other one and they can even check if you have it installed on your Computer or not but they simply don't do it as they never care.

With Windows 10 they want as many People as possible in order to make sure the install base is as big as possible. When you take that in Count you can draw conclusions and conclude that with Windows 10 they will probably care less and most specially the first year when the upgrade is practically free.

I was browsing the Windows Phone store the other day and it keeps surprising me how Mario Kart Super Circuit is just standing there as one of the top apps.

You'd almost phone Nintendo to give them a heads up so that maybe MS gets their act together...
I pre-ordered two Lumias 640XL for me and my wife which is coming in few weeks. I still wonder how good Windows 10 on phones is going to be and most specially for my wife who is switching from Android to Windows Phone(her decision which surprised me).

I'm currently (temporarily) running the Lumia 535 as my main phone, as a test of sorts.
The phone itself has a bit of a crappy touch screen so I would probably recommend a better (more expensive) model to everyone who wants to run Windows Phone, but the OS itself is a pleasant surprise, even with that kind of crappy Store (in terms of contents).
It's much less of a mess than Android is. I'll be switching back to my main phone in a few days (Galaxy S5) but next time I'll pick a new phone Windows will get serious consideration (but that also depends on how Windows 10 will turn out).
(also, Office Lens totally rocks)
I've been using my Lumia 920 for over two years now and at the beginning i had some troubles to get used to the OS but i really love it. It's not flashy but simply and just damn solid for all usual operations. My wife was the one who came to the idea of the Lumia 640XL which i didn't knew existed. She is a Android fan but got tired of adds, adware and stability problems at times which i never had. The only things i can think of that i dislike about my phone is the fact that you can't change the battery(still working like a charm), change the cover and expand internal storage things the Lumia 640XL offers plus the bigger size which is a little issue with my current phone since i personally think is too small.

The only way I'm ever considering a windows phone is if it comes with a proper home screen....
Then you need my launcher for Windows phones which provide a home screen similar to Android. I started the project long ago but never used nor continued the project at the end because i got used to the default home screen myself.

Redstone: The codename for the next Windows update coming in 2016

Image

Microsoft loves to use codenames and from the past few years, there are two in particular that you may recall; Blue and Threshold. With Windows 10 (Threshold) coming to market sometime this summer, Microsoft is already starting to work on the next update for the OS.

Microsoft has said multiple times that Windows will be moving at a faster cadence than in the past and they are already working on a release for 2016. The codename for the project is 'Redstone', a popular item in the recently acquired game, Minecraft.

At this time, not much is known about Microsoft's plans for Windows vNext, but the company has now entered the planning stages of the update, as confirmed by two internal sources. This shouldn't come as a big surprise as the company is perpetually planning for the next iteration of its software, regardless of the platform.

We will be curious to see if any more codenames pop up using the Minecraft terminology. We have already seen several names from the Halo series spring to life, like the Spartan web browser and of course, Cortana too.

It would seem logical that this will not be a large update for the OS. Seeing that Windows 10 is an overhaul of the entire platform, Redstone will likely be relatively minor in comparison. Until Microsoft clarifies what the post-Windows 10 world looks like for the platform, there are many questions left to be answered.

It is worth pointing out too that Windows Server is expected to be released in 2016, so Redstone could possibly be related to this project as well. It's early days for the this project but as we learn more and solidify what Redstone will become, we will keep you updated.

For now, know that Redstone is the next codename for Windows update and if you happen to see it pop up anywhere at Microsoft, make sure to let us know.

There is more about Windows 10 than what we get from the media and i think Microsoft is sneaking quite well since the media only Focus on other companies. They recently talked about Rasperi Pi Support as well as the Rom Version coming for Android devices. Then we have the XB1 and WPhones getting it as well and finally PC/Tablets getting free upgrade of Windows 10 as well. Doesn't that smell fishy??? it's by all means a great move but it also means Windows 10 is going to be in a wide amount of devices and that's awesome. They are building a eco-System that may hit hard the competition if they get the plan through.

From a developer standpoint we have universal apps now which is glorious and at the same time means that 1 app can be compatible with all devices. That's awesome and i think something the competition isn't realizing. They are offering the best development Tools in my humble opinion for free which is Visual Studio as well as providing great Services, Xbox live is coming to PC and to complete the Combo they may release the better DX this year as well as allowing Streaming to all devices. I may be totally wrong here but i believe when the right Moment Comes the competition will get hit hard, very hard.

Now i'm more confident that Microsoft "Jaque Mate" strategy is real:

Simply amazing! i got a mail already telling me that Visual Studio 2015 RC is out, time to enter CODE MODE... Satya Nadella is the best that could ever happen to Microsoft.

The ability to create universal apps that will run in a huge amount of devices(Win8.1 Version of the @ruanTuberHD is a universal app), Objective-C and Java code that compiles in VS2015 for easy port, Hololens that makes a huge Screen and run apps around you and the ability to stream content/games from all devices running Windows 10 from Smartphones to tablets and even consoles is way beyond awesomeness.... is greatness at it's best and better than sex. That's official now XD
