Use Pete's or my latest plugin (depending on your graphics card) and make sure you enable MASK BIT emulation.
With my plugin you may want to set ALPHA TESTING to aggressive.
I think that is all you need to do, really.

YES! thank you very much for your help! all those boxes are gone and now i can enjoy the game. the sound cuts and skips a little but it's ok i suppose. i have a crappy ESS maestro sound card and i don't know which is the best driver to use for sound.

 

Try Pete's Dsound 1.10. It gives me good sound in Silent Hill on my SB live.

 

i changed to null2's audio driver 1.4 and it works great! no pops or cuts and very clear, thanks anyway Adair.
it is possible to programme some buttons to the mouse? i can switch to anologue and move with the mouse but that's about it. sorry i am new epsxe so i don't know all the different setups.
