Apart from Corn that only works with Mario64 the fastest N64 still is UltraHLE, but it too uses lots of tricks (http://www.emuunlim.com/UltraHLE/old/techinfo.htm) that don't work for many titles.
Since UltraHLE uses the Glide API you'll need a Glide wrapper to use it, as you don't have a 3Dfx card.

There is a modified version of UltraHLE, called SupraHLE, but I haven't tried that yet:
http://thecpy.emulation64.com/suprahle/

All other emulators are likely to need something like 600-800MHz CPU to run at an acceptable speed.

i'm sorry but you're wrong! i can run MANY games in 1964 and pj64 VERY well WITH sound.. check my profile, you'll see. and no average_guy, the best choice is 1964. :) also these "tricks" you are describing to people don't much matter to the gamer's, as long as the game runs, at good speed :) here's a shot for you skeptic ones..

At the moment, I guess so.

But due to the UltraHLE source code just being released or leaked (http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21935) it's very likely that SupraHLE will not be continued (http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=21961).

What sounds bad at first, might be actually good, because if the original UltraHLE authors don't object, the emulator could be made more compatible in a far easier way than SupraHLE did it, not to mention that it might be possible to use OpenGL instead of Glide, which would eliminate the need for a Glide wrapper.

I guess we'll have to wait and see...

The problem is that only the "primitive" games run fast on 1964 and PJ64, but these games are likely to work with UltraHLE or SupraHLE as well and need an even less powerful machine.
But as soon as you try some games that don't work with UltraHLE (like Rareware's Perfect Dark or Concers Bad Fur Day) you will need a relatively fast machine to run these. My P3-550 certainly is too slow to run CBFD at a playable speed and sound is just sloooooow.

also these "tricks" you are describing to people don't much matter to the gamer's, as long as the game runs, at good speed :)
The question was, why some emulators are faster than others, so I explained it, because it also explains why some games run and others won't.

try taking spaces out from any _ROMS_ and the _DIRECTORY_ of suprahle. Mike, if you call zelda oot a primitive game, then ok, but iirc its 256mbit. if it isnt odd that it runs well on my pc then i dont know what is! ;) thanks for the answers :)

Yeah you're right! mario64 runs 25fps in uhle while it runs ~60 in pj64 with sound. i think if i had a voodoo2 i'd get full speed, but the glide wrapper is just giving your pc more work to do. Unlike in pj64 or 1964, it has d3d support, and therefore the cpu doesn't need to change anything, thus, LESS work ;)

It's not about size it's about how the hardware is used. The more tricks are done with the hardware the less the game will work with HLE, it's as simple as that.
Maybe I should have written "less sophisticated" instead of "primitive"...

Though I agree that native d3d should be much better but I am not sure that current d3d plugins are the best they can achieve (they need a lot of improvements).

Suprahle is faster than either pj64 or 1964 even with a gildewrapper (evoodoo rocks).

Though I can get almost full speeds in both 1964 and pj64 but I still prefer suprahle for the supported games coz gameplay is much more smooth there.

If evoodoo can improve just a little bit (there are graphic glitches with some games) than its definitely a better bet until unless they improve d3d plugins for N64(they all lack in one or the other departments).

Online, yes. You can find them in some shops, however.
