I've noticed that as of Pete's latest, Driver, a game that would run pretty smoothly with heavy texture caching, now exihibits the same jerkiness it previously did on dynamic caching, regardless of memory allocation, etc.

I'm not sure if this game indeed "requires" heavy texture caching to run smoothly, or if it is something that could be helped in another way. Maybe Pete could look into this? There are a couple of unrelated visual annoyances as well ;) like missing wheels (only OpenGL, Soft and peops; D3D is fine, oddly) and a crash or rather freezing problem, which more likely is emulator related, however.

I'm running ePSXe on a P3 500 w/ GF2 MX, so basically even the slightest slowdown becomes quite noticeable (which, in this particular case is a good thing, if you ask me ;)

Pete: if you don't have the game and would like to look into this, I'd gladly donate it, uh, as it is for a good cause and stuff ;) and ePSXe's library could use one more perfectly working driving game instead of all those RPG's :p
I think I've lost your snail mail address tho (dixit gabi :D)

Nice one :)

I have Driver, so I could check the missing tires in ogl... and you are right! I think some very old versions (1.2x maybe ;)) would have shown the tires, well, but 1.58 will do the trick, too :)

The slowdowns... oh, well, on my GF3/Athlon 1.2C I don't get slowdowns in Driver (only when the cd access kicks in), but I see that the texture cache will get stressed very much by that game... well, dunno if I can do something about that as well.

Just to let you know, Pete, it didn't work.
To be absolutely sure, I checked with an older version + heavy cacheing and the difference is more than noticeable, it's annoying.

With the 1.58's you can literally watch the card (GF2MX- Elsa is dead, long live Elsa ;) ) take a break for a split-second (FPS effectively halving) then recover and so on and so forth, whereas with 1.56b, though not being 50/50 all the time either, it's at least not jerky.

I also turned off sound to see if there's any general slowdown but it just kept going from 50 to 25 and back regardless.

Well, I guess I have to live with it then, there's always the console to resort to, besides I saw the old PC conversion and might pick it up for real cheap ;) Thanks anyway :) for the tires!
