"Dammit Jim! I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!" Dr. (Bones) McCoy to Captain James T. Kirk when asked to treat the Horta. The episode: The Devil in the Dark Airdate March 9, 1967.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

Hey, somebody said that I would love this... and he's absolutely right ;)

One more reason for me to play FF IX :)

And sxamiga is right about the original quotation. The Horta is a silicon-based lifeform, that's why Bones said that he isn't a bricklayer.

...har har !! ...I knew it :D

...come to think of it, almost all of the humorous little incidents that I like in Star Trek, involve either bones or Spock.
Remember "This side of paradise" ? The spore-affected McCoy says to Kirk: "Hiya Jimmy boy !!" ...while giving him a friendly pat on the shoulder. I break in uncontrollable laughter every time I see this. :D
Also in the same episode, Kirk is calling Spock an "elf", an "overgrown jackrabbit" and a "devil eared freak" ...that one cracks me up every single time... :D
I'd love to see some game references based on that particular episode.

(I hope I'll be excused for this little OT post :emb: )

This episode is truly hilarious, it's one of my favorites.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is damn funny too (in the beginning, when Kirk, Spock and McCoy are at a camp). Just look at the dialogues:

SPOCK
As you are so fond of pointing out,
Doctor, I am half human.

McCOY
Certainly doesn't show.

SPOCK
Thank you.

McCOY
This guy never changes. I insult him
and he takes it as a compliment.
(pouring himself
another shot)
You know, the two of you could drive
a man to drink.
Bones and Spock always have funny fights.

KIRK
What are you doing, Spock?

SPOCK
I am preparing to toast a marsh melon.

Marsh melon? Kirk and McCoy hide their smiles as Spock
holds the marshmallow over the fire.

McCOY
Well, I'll be damned. A marsh melon.
Where did you learn that?

SPOCK
Before leaving the ship I consulted
the library computer to familiarize
myself with the customs of "camping
out." The evening meal is tradition-
ally followed by the toasting of
marsh melons.

Spock offers sticks and marshmallows to Kirk and McCoy
who play along, amused by Spock's dead serious approach
to frivolity.

McCOY
Tell me something, Spock. What do we
do after we toast the marsh... er,
melons?

SPOCK
We consume them.

McCOY
I know we consume them, I mean after
that.

SPOCK
I believe we are required to engage
in a ritual known as the sing-a-long.
Spock talking about MARSH MELONS is too damn funny :D

And the last one for today:

KIRK AND McCOY
(overlapping)
"Row, row, row your boat gently down
the stream merrily, merrily, merrily,
merrily, life is but a dream..."

They signal Spock that it's his turn to jump in but
the Vulcan merely regards them quizzically. The
sing-a-long grinds to a halt.

KIRK
What's wrong, Spock? Why didn't you
join in?

SPOCK
I was trying to comprehend the mean-
ing of the words.

McCOY
(losing patience)
It's a song, you green-blooded son of
a Vulcan. You sing it. The words
aren't important. What's important is
that you have a good time singing it.

SPOCK
(sincere)
I am sorry, Doctor. We're we having a
good time?

McCOY
(giving up)
I liked him better before he died.
 And later, on this night:

SPOCK
(toubled)
Captain?

KIRK
We're on leave. Call me Jim.

SPOCK
Jim?

KIRK
Yes, Spock?

SPOCK
LIfe is not a dream.

KIRK
(with a sigh)
Go to sleep, Spock.
 :rotflmao: This is so damn funny that I'm going to watch this movie once again ;)

PS: I hope people forgive this OT flood

Those lines are from the original (unedited) movie. I've taken them directly from the official script (I have all the official scripts for all Star Trek movies [except for Star Trek X: Nemesis, which I have yet to buy]).

i'm a big square fan, and I don't like this at all.
It's not done by the creators, but by the translators who have been given too much creative freedom.

This isn't the only sci-fi reference they fitted in there. Before you fight the ultimate boss, you get that "fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering" crap that was the premise for Star Wars: Episode 1,
I hate the way that travesty of a movie has tarnished this square game.

There are times when Japanese do insert references here and there. Silent Hill is a good example.. But I can assure you that these lame star wars/star trek references are not present in the original Japanese game.
Nor that squall/cloud "pun".. since those names do not have the same double meaning, and therefore cannot work in the Japanese language.
Dumb translators.. They should just do their job.

ok for one, its star wars episode 6 (return of the jedi), IIRC (might be "empire", havent seem em in a long time).

and also....i dont want a straight translation. thats gonna be boring, for the reasons you said. some joke that the japanese find hilarious isnt gonna make me laugh. some joke for americans isnt gonna make the french laugh. we all have different languages.

in fact i think they ARE doing their job with the jokes. japanese games have little inuendos, and if directly translated they would be really stupid

episode 6? what are you referring to? The "fear leads to . . ." quote is from ep1 as far as I know. It got famous from the trailer, long before the movie opened.

As for the translations... I support more for authenticity. I'd rather learn the foreign culture than to have it replaced with something familiar.

woah woah woah man, i hate to get all star-wars nerd on you, but you best not mess with the holy trilogy around here. yoda says it, definitely in 5 or 6 when he is training Luke to become a jedi. episode 1 is a damn horrible movie by the way....

Alright, Star Wars geek, if you won't try to verify your own word, I guess I will.
I went through my Behind the Magic CDs to find the closest match to the quote. Actually Ben Kenobi said the closest thing. Yoda himself said something remotely similar, twice. But neither is the same as the quote in Episode 1. Vader also talked a little about fear and anger with Luke, but exactly a little.
You're welcome to prove me wrong, just don't claim it otherwise.

alright, now i remember it. that exact phrase from FF9 wasnt in any movie. and you hit it right on, thats what they said (i cant really argue with that).

my 2 points: they never said that in Episode 1, and the quote from FF9 wasnt an exact, direct, star wars quote, because it contains too many words.

by the way im not much of a starwars geek i just like the movies a lot . where did you get these "behind the magic CDs"? i want em...

Oh, you don't know, that's why...
That quote is exactly as Yoda said in Episode I. See attachment.
You can also watch the trailer on starwars.com:
http://www.starwars.com/episode-i/video/epitrailer/epitrailer1.html

Behind the Magic is a 2-CD set insider's guide for the classic trilogy, made by LucasArts, a long time ago ;)
http://www.lucasarts.com/products/btm/default.htm
And for Episode I, it's simply called Insider's Guide, also a 2-CD set:
http://www.lucasarts.com/products/episode1guide/default.htm
Unfortunately LucasArts has no plans to make one for ep2 or ep3. For those, the DVDs published by LucasFilms itself are our only hope ;)

I'm a fan of the movies, but even more a fan of LucasArts, I'm a veteran gamer afterall.

what? contains too many words?
the fact that a group of words are synonymous grants greater probability of it's involvement, not less.

and who are we kidding here? These phrases are pretty damn distinctive.
Practically everyone watched episode I or the trailer remembers yoda saying it regarding anakin skywalker's admittance into the Jedi fold.
It was one of the focal points of the damn movie.

I didnt notice, but someone in this thread already raised this point with a screenshot.

Why am i even arguing this point? Shut up.
You can either say you like translators tampering with the games authenticity, or you can say you don't like it. But don't give me some crap about it not being a direct quote.

dammit, i think i need to edit that crap out of my post, i dont know what the hell i was thinking, can we just give this up now? i think i've been made a fool many times over in this thread...i think we need to drop it, eh?

sorry for bringing back such an old thread, but...

some more FFVII SW references, in addition to the names taken from Luke's wingmen...

RED XIII = first X-Wing that explodes over Death Star
Nanaki = Anakin?
Piett = Captain/Admiral Piett
