Some interesting comparisons

So I was checking out my local OEM distributor, which has excellent prices for all kinds of hardware. This morning I found out that my parent's desktop computer had gone kaput - something with either the AGP slot or video card (I'll have to check when I get home). Anyways I was checking out TOMS HARDWARE (yes, refraction you heard me) for the cpu charts. What I found was somewhat known to me, but not to this extent.

At this particular OEM business, they sell the following processors for the following prices (keep in mind $CDN)

Socket 775 Pentium D 960 @ 3.6 GHz: $429.99 (Newegg lists at $350 American)
Socket AM2 Athlon X2 3800+ @ 2.0 GHz: $99.99 (Newegg lists at $85.99 American)

I wanted to do some comparisons between these two processors. According to THG, said Athlon processor is approximately on par (and frequently beating) the Pentium D 960 processor, in every type of application analyzed. Although there were quite a few tests where the Intel prevailed, if one processor costs ~400 bucks, and the other costs ~90, there is NO excuse for the 400 dollar processor to lose. Of course, nowadays, if you're going to spend 400 bucks on a processor, you buy a good Core 2 chip, but these processors is much too small for the price difference.

You can check out Tom's Hardware chart to see the difference.

CPU Charts | Tom's Hardware

But for the price and performance you are better off getting the newer AM2 than the older P4 960.
um thanks? I believe in the previous post I said I looked at the tom's hardware charts for reference. If you read the post, you might have noticed that I said that the P4 960 was outperformed by the X2 3800+ despite being 300 bucks cheaper. but, um... thanks for stating the obvious?

Then you pretty much answered your own question.

The retailer must have not updated their prices for the Pentium D 960.

It might have been a top of the line model, and retailers never like to sell it for less than such extreme amounts. I wonder if they can find a moron to buy it from them.

Sometimes, it's either an old stock, or...... It's rare???

The Pentium D 960 is just one step behind the Pentium Extreme Edition if I remember correctly, which is the fastest Pentium D chip. (No, not the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition! Silly Intel naming schemes! :p )

lol... can you read? please point me to the question (which you'll find doesn't exist). It was simply a thread about comparisons of cost and performance. You might say it was a comment. Newegg.com is one of the biggest OEM branches in the US (and one of the most popular AFAIK). I'm sure they have updated their prices.

@Cid: yeah I agree - the MSRP based on 1000 units for them was probably too high to go much lower than that. They probably just have some extras and want to sell them but won't take that much of a hit.

True, and I think there's always unaware customers that might buy it. If you didn't know jack about CPU architectures, what's not to like about a 3.6gHz dual core Intel processor, while most are 1.8-2.6 these days?

I checked the prices in pricewatch.com , it lists the price of Pentium D 960 at 329 dollars. While the Athlon X2 3800 is at 90 dollars. Yep, HUGE difference.

Probably it's going to be the only choice for people who doesn't like to change their motherboards, which is ironic if they did. :p
