i would vote on 2 games, cc (music, battle system, video, cinematics, and look at my avatar) and xenogears (music, story, characters, battle system)... story is a very important aspect of a game for me and i feel cc sorta lacked in that department... also the ending is important for me but i still am playing xenogears... im 42 hours into the game and im still on cd 1 -_-' ... oh well that means i got lotsa stuff still to do :D

Hmmm. This is actualy a very difficult question to answer. People really vary on this.
A lot of people (including myself) swear by Xenogears. It has a good plot, and the graphics are nothing short of amazing, especialy for the PSX.
A lot of people are sticklers for the FF series, but once again we get debate here. Somepeople like the 'old skool' style of FF9. Some people prefer FF8, but hate the drawing. FF7 probs does have the best pot of the three. If you haven't played it, then get that
Chrono Cross is a poor sequel to Chrono Trigger, arguably the greatest RPG to this day. It is good, but pales into insignificance next to other RPGs
If you like a bit of Strategy added into the mix (similar to Shining Force), then Final Fantasy Tactics is definately the way to go.
There are many other RPGs on the PSX, too many to list here, many of them are good candidates for best PSX rpg, but IMO ATM, it goes like this
1) Xenogears
2) Final Fantasy Tactics
3) Final Fantasy 7 (If I ever manage to get it again :p )

hmmm

xenogears, thats 1 i haven't heard of. but u say that chrono cross is poorer that chrono trigger (i agree the best RPG of all time) but some would say that it's better than the original. Reason I ask iz because ive got exams and afterwards i'm gonna have a very looong summer break and i wanna know what games 2 play.:)

My favorite RPG's for PSX I would rank in order: FF7, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Valkyrie Profile, FF9... I think FF7 and Xenogears are at another level from the rest though, mainly cause of story and gameplay. FF7 really was a beautiful game that was very deep and had an awesome story and memorable characters. Xenogears has amazing graphics and a full 3d world. With hardware acceleration on the emulator, it looks absolutely amazing.

No way is it better than the original. Not by any strech of the imagination. The only thing it beats it on is graphics.
Trigger had better plot, better character development, better music (although not quality, just better comosed, so that the battle theme doesn't irritate you), and a better game engine. One of the things I liked about the original was that a battle was jumped into almost instantaneously, and they were really quick.
If you need a couple of games for the hols, Xenogears and FFTactics will easily hold you over. Finish FF9 first before you get any new games tho, otherwise you will end up with a pile of RPGs you have never got round to completing :p

i agree absolutely about the battles in trigger. They were very quick and the game flowed into the battles very easily. In other RPG's the battles take ages and sometimes scare u in the middle of the night. The battle music woz OK though it wasn't too bad.
Ure right about finishing FF9 i'm only nearly at the end of disc 1.

But Chrono Trigger, first ever RPG i played and still my best. Superb.

I agree, Xenogears is an awesome game so it'd have to be my first fav. and then FF7 second. I have to say that FF7 doesn't have as good a story as Xenogears does though... But it was my first RPG and had a whole load of mini-games and lots of fun things to do.

i liked the cc battle music, its just that the battle transitions sucked

If you play the CT port on the emu from an iso though it's pretty quick, almost no load time... I like having all those extras too... like you can view all the different endings, the added FMV's, and the character sketches and sound test... pretty cool!

1.Xenogears
2.Star Ocean
3.Final Fantasy Tactics
4.TOD2
5.Grandia
There are what I feel are the 5 best rpgs on the psx. The ct port was ok, legend of leagia is good. Final Fantasy 8 is one fot the worsest rpg's I ever played. I never could get into cc, It just didn't apeal to like ct or the others did.

Chrono Trigger on PSX just plain sucks, any way you want to cut it. At least that's my opinion.

Chrono Cross wasn't bad, but I found it to be really lacking compared to the original.

My favorite would have to be Final Fantasy Tactics, hands down. Since it has been announced for GBA, I am a truly happy man. I just wish I had more money. I still have a whole slew of GameCube games that I want.

> Thousand Arms...the voice acting in this game is incredibly good!

The English voice acting? Good lord! o_O

My favorite PSX RPG is down to two different games, and it mostly depends on the alignment of the planets or my mood on any given day. Xenogears is the game that I played and was so vastly superior to any of the PSX RPGs before it. Other than the monster variety, it was absolutely the best in every category. Now that I've gotten into anime, I like Xenogears even more (if that's possible :p). I also like Suikoden 2 a lot. Although there are some strange bugs, it's quite a bit of fun. Despite its age, Suikoden is also one of the best RPGs on the PSX.

And whenever Lina`chan and the crew get around to finishing the translation, Tales of Phantasia most likely will be, seeing how I loved the SNES version and the PSX version - at least on paper - is better in every way, unlike the usual remake.

Edited the post to make my very brief comment on voice acting clearer. It was referring to Thousand Arms.
