This is a dumb move from Sony and most specially with their current position this generation. We all heard from the rumors of the NEO but until now nothing was confirmed. Now they come and hit the trigger first and this mistake is going to hurt them down the line for very few reasons:

1. MS don't have Don Matrick anymore but Phil Spencer who is a gamer and know exactly what he is doing.

2. They are not just hitting the trigger first but also giving MS under Phil's charge a chance to create a more powerful console and that alone is a HUGE mistake as that's probably the chance he have been waiting to get. MS can now officially announce different and more powerful iterations of the XB1.

3. MS have UWP and don't have to care about releasing several forms of the Xbox or hardware including transforming the most powerful platform on earth into a Xbox which is PC.

Sony... you are awakening a sleeping giant here...

Andrew House, president and global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told the Financial Times that the “high-end PS4” would be more expensive than the current $350 version.

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” he said. “We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.”

The new console, which is codenamed “Neo”, will target hardcore gamers, he said, as well as consumers with a 4K television set looking for more high-resolution content.

However, in a move that may disappoint some fans, Mr House said that Sony would not be unveiling its new console next week and refused to say when or at what price the unit would go on sale. “We want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety,” he said.

Nonetheless, he downplayed concerns that the move would cause interoperability problems between the old and new PS4 hardware.

“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,”he said.

They didn't give actual specs or price point, so MS making a more powerful console still requires that they wait and see what the Neo is actually like. Even then, waiting to see what the competition has to offer typically means waiting too long to actually change the strength of your own console. From what I remember, the Xbox One was improved once they saw what the PS4 offered, but it was too late in the design phase to make significant changes.
The same is true here, Microsoft has to make a more powerful console even before Sony gives us solid details on the Neo. You don't wait until they finish their console to choose how strong your own will be. Especially not if you want games to launch with it, since game developers need to know a long time in advance how powerful your hardware is.
So the new Xbox can easily be more powerful, but they cannot do this by waiting after Sony.

You also forgot a positive aspect of Sony going first: it makes Microsoft look like followers. Going first means getting all of the hate, but also all of the praise. If releasing 1.5 versions of the PS4 and Xbone works, people will think Microsoft simply followed in Sony's footsteps. To the average gamer, which is where most consoles go, this is important. They want the cool new gadget before everyone else, and they want it from the company doing it before anyone else. If Sony goes first and delivers a good console, it'll reduce the impact of the new Xbox (even if its more powerful). If Sony goes first and face-plant, Microsoft has a good path to victory.

And if they awake a sleeping giant, they'll just call Team Ico to the rescue ;).

You have some interesting points but you are forgetting quite few points. This is not a new console generation like we had until now but a console refresh in the middle of a generation if you can call it like that. This generation have been driven by power, resolution, pixels and one more grass in a game. Right now Sony can't wait longer and developers already have the specs of the PS4 Neo and is almost sure the one that got leaked. Sony need the Neo because is the one required to use their VR properly as the games shown so far look pretty much like PS2 games at 1080p. Sony is winning but they don't have the best cards right now and MS is cooking something very dangerous here and i have mentioned that when i said they are slowly executing their "Jaque Mate" plan now known as "Project Helix".

The main difference here is that while a company can have an advantage by releasing the new gadget it could also be a downside as well when people know another company is preparing something better. MS best card is that they aren't tied to hardware anymore like Sony is heavily tied to with both consoles. The reason why i said that is a huge mistake by Sony is because we knew they will eventually release new hardware but if MS comes first the media will pick it up and destroy it unlike Sony where all of sudden is a great and logical decision. Now that Sony hit the trigger first the road is open for MS to pretty much do what they want. By not being tied to hardware they can transform or sell any hardware to power their Xbox army which now seem to include PC hardware.

After all this information we can go back to what i said previously.... this generation is driven by power, resolution, pixels and one more grass in a game.... now take that in count for a split of a second and look at the position Sony is going to be after MS release their new devices or even better turn PC into Xbox and Xbox into PC. They not just going to have the better technology but they will probably have oculus as a partner for VR while Sony will just deliver the games with probably less resolution, less grass and less graphical improvements. Get the point now?

Unless..... all of sudden Resolution and pixel doesn't matter anymore and Digital foundry stop making their analysis and probably focus on PC games only right?

And if they awake a sleeping giant, they'll just call Team Ico to the rescue ;).
They don't need ICO because they have "The last guardian" which is a nice weapon they can use to troll fans over and over just as they have been doing for almost a decade now ;)

Well then I guess Sony is doomed. If they release it first they get caught up by Microsoft, if they release it second Microsoft has already cornered the market.
They shouldn't even bother manufacturing consoles anymore, really. They should partner up with Digital Foundry and ask for welfare at this point.

Exactly, whatever they come first or last they have the bad card here so what's the solution? do nothing and enjoy the easy win this generation because is already in your hands. MS can come with better hardware but the media will take care of them for the so called "Splitting community" so Sony don't really have much to fear and that exactly is my point. Instead, Sony is focusing in VR gimmicks that will be reflected in their games pretty much like MS and Kinect where great oportunities were missed for focusing in gimmicks that at the end of the day not everyone eat it.

Look, i'm not even on MS side actually but baffled that Sony opened the door to MS in their position right now and most specially under Phil's charge. As was reported recently it seems like MS wants to turn PC into Xbox and come with more powerful hardware so they are trying to take Sony into the corner as well as other ones such as Apple and Google since Sony isn't really MS target i guess.

Sony isn't doomed just yet they just did a very stupid mistake in my opinion that i consider terrible judging what MS is doing. I even went on record and called MS move shaddy because they are trying to use force, power and their position in the industry as well as size to pretty much crush everyone in their way. I like healthy compentition and that's not what MS is doing in my eyes.

Piers Harding-Rolls. The same man recently said that VR sales in 2020 would total at least 38M. Xbox One sales are currently at 20M, so nearly twice what Xbox has sold, but in headsets:

And then he said that Sony would be the king of VR, gaining at least 64% of the market before the end of 2016:

Sony is dead. And alive. Sony are zombies. And zombie games go on the Xbox One.
Therefore Microsoft will buy Sony, confirmed.

The same man predicted Nintendo would release a Wii 1.5 before releasing the Wii U in 2013. (Why?)
He also significantly underestimated the gap between the PS4 and the Xbox One, saying it would be 11M by the beginning of next year (it's currently 19M).

Which said: "Want to avoid his ignominious fate? Just be like Piers Harding-Rolls and predict stuff so far into the future no one can tell how accurate your calls are until you've moved on to used car sales or something."

Be careful which sources you find. Some people will agree with you because they're knowledgeable. Others because they don't know anything.

I just am happy I don't have an XBOX One or a PS4 with this nonsense going on.

I'd like to have a Wii U, but life won't end it I don't get one.

Hehehe i know that's why I wrote "oh, look" :p

I'm curious about upcoming E3.. I might base a few purchases on that as everything below my TV is cool yet rather outdated. Not a problem in itself but I like new things too.
Yes, but you're wise in making purchases, not making impulse buys, but wise purchases that make sense. I respect that and think highly of you for that.

The Sony parody is twice the length of the Microsoft parody, another example of the media spending more time talking about Sony as they ignore Microsoft.
Disgusting.
