This is the next soft plugin which started all those 2xsai and super eagle modes in nickks plugin.(It is still unreleased).

Now nickk is using this mode in nextgl plugin and soon as its release takes place nickk will use this mode in next3d plugin as well.

So I think nextgl 1.9 would be the first official release of a plugin with 2xsai.

Oh great excellent.

Oh and one more thing. You know the first pic you posted on the thread. Is it supposed to look like that
No No :D
Actually initial snaps are from very first versions when even textures were not applied.Check later pics for better things and yes if you can read the whole thread then it can explain you how things kept improving on that plugin.

NickK,

That 8-bit color mode is very cool — Sort of silly, but definitely cool.

Do you use an adaptive palette? I happen to be looking to a solution to a related question (using a limited color palette as a noise reduction method for cartoons). Could you give me any pointers to methods for choosing an appropriate set of colors?

Thanks!

Well, the monochrome palette is the best looking, of course, but the color palette is fixed. The only reason for this is because it already takes a lot of processing time to render the images into memory and it usually seems like I usually don't have too much room left for making an adaptive palette, especially for such a wide range of colors. I used the oil palette from Neo Paint. It's farily well balanced but, of course, doesn't always look that great.

and when is that going to be, u know the new release ^^

About the 8-bit mode palette —

Yeah, that makes sense. If you’re running in 8 bit mode, speed is probably the highest priority. And it looks darned nice in those screenshots considering that the palette is fixed.

About 2xSaI, Super Eagle, etc. — Do Pete’s graphics plug-ins do something similar to Super Eagle on transparent boundaries (but not within textures)? It looks to me like pointy parts of sprite edges are rounded off.

And here’s a nice twiddle to 2xSaI, if you’re interested. 2xSaI tends to mess up within dithered textures, inferring lines within them instead of smoothing them out. A quick (but not perfect) fix for this is to check the local contrast (probably just sum of color component differences) and (software) interpolate instead when the contrast is low.
