New PS2 DS 2 Controller Missing a Pin?

Hey,

I just brought a new DualShock 2 Playstation 2 Controller (SCPH-10010 U) and when I took a look at the plug I noticed that instead of 9 pins, there are only 8. Is this how the controller is supposed to be, or is it missing a pin? In other words is the controller mal-manufactured since it is missing a pin?

Specifically, the pin that is missing is the middle one of the third column on the very right of the plug.

Here is a picture to better explain what I mean,

The picture is from this website documenting the PS2 Controller,
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/06/playstation2_controller_i.html

The pin that is missing on my controller is the 8th pin from the left (in other words the middle pin in the very last column).

Thanks,

Yeah i just checked 2 of my controllers and they don't have it.

Perhaps the unused connection is for the testing phase of the hardware, to relay data of somekind. Or maybe its a legacy of an older ps2 controller and the engineers have figured out a way not to need it, cutting costs. Who knows.

Hey,

I just got off the phone with Sony's Technical Support Line, yea and basically they were annoying with me basically saying they are not aware of any manufacturer revisions to the product that would cause a pin to be missing. In fact, the customer service guy had a bit of an attitude with me since the controller worked fine. Even though I explained that on my older PS2 DualShock 2 Controller (with same model number) there were 9 pins!

Does anyone know if the missing pin is a manufacturer error or is this an apparent undocumented revision to the PS2 DualShock 2 Controller (SCPH-10010 U)?

Thanks,

So, just to be clear -- you are missing that same exact pin I am missing?

That would make sense, however shouldn't any such revisions come out with different model numbers (ie SCPH-XXXXX U)?

Thanks,

Yeah my controllers for both my ps2 are missing the 8th "Unknown" wire as its called in the picture. Rumble and analog work perfectly for both.

Same

i just tried to sell my PS2 and the guy said he couldnt take it because both of my controllers were missing that exact same pin as yours is. Now i am stuck with the system becasue they wont take it without at least 1 controller with all 9 pins. I was about ready to punch the guy in the face.
