Last week Vivendi Universal renewed speculation that their video games unit was up for sale, and Microsoft is reportedly kicking the tires.

Vivendi Universal’s games unit includes a number of game developers including Blizzard Entertainment, which is known for popular games like Diablo and Warcraft.

According to Arvind Bhatia of SWS Securities, sales for Vivendi’s game division are about $400 million, through the company is thought to be asking for anywhere from $1 to $2 billion for it. In a research note, Bhatia indicated that he believed Microsoft’s offer was likely to be less than $1 billion.

Picking up the Vivendi games division, particularly at a bargain price, would be a natural move for cash-rich Microsoft, who is looking for established game developers to add to its stable of Xbox game producers.

“Microsoft is trying to give customers a reason to buy the Xbox,” Bhatia said. “These titles from Vivendi would be exclusive on Xbox.” Bhatia added, “Microsoft still needs more killer applications to give Sony a run for its money.”

Electronic Arts, the number one video game maker, is also reportedly interested in purchasing the unit and is currently involved in discussions with Vivendi. A purchase by Electronic Arts would ensure that future titles would be available on all major game platforms.

Electronic Arts and Vivendi declined to comment on any discussions, and Microsoft could not be reached for comment.

Seems like this is becoming a reality. Vivendi is definately selling. Now its coming down to has the most money and best apeal.

That will further slow them down, though. Despite having a few teams Blizzard is famous for their release date pushbacks and delayed patches.
Unless they're hiring and forming new teams for the console games. But then It wouldnt really be "Blizzard", it'll be the rights and fame they're buying.
Strider, I just dont want to see too many microsoft logo's around. I already have a permanent one on my start button. :heh:

Not neccasarily. Hiring new developers is something companies like Blizzard do all the time. It's up to the overseer of development to decide if he likes the way the game is developed. IE following the vison of warcraft.

More coders can never be a bad thing ^^

Aye, but I meant if they hired completely new teams for the consoles, it wouldnt be "Blizzard". And if they transferred existing teams, their games would suffer from pushbacks even more so. :heh:
IIRC, Blizzard is split up to many teams, 2 mainly, that has nothing to do with each other(WC/SC and Diablo) . They make their own games, and hand up their work when its done. I would think that things would be similar when they move on to the console department too.

I too think that it would be better if EA gets vivendi. But I highly doubt it. You just don't know the extents to which MS can go.

Question is, who's next? ;)

I don't want EA to buy Blizzard, That could mean bad things for battle.net

I seriously doubt EA's ability to keep a network like battle.net running.

One thing is certain. Someone needs to buy them. The company is in huge financial trouble and may go bankrupt.

in Which case. Everyone loses. No More Blizzard games. No More battle.net

*shakes head*

EA: pay for bnet.
M$: patch after patch and expansion packs that will cost another $30

The benefits to microsoft getting them (Outside of an Xbox enviroment) Is that Microsoft knows computers, They know how to run a network. And they are good about providing updates for software.

Some free, Some cost money.

The benefits to EA getting them are.

We know EA is dedicated to all platforms. (PC's being the very last platform they dedicate themselves too)

EA's ability to maintain a network like battle.net is definately in question.

Other than that. I can't see a whole lot of benefit (if your a computer gamer) In EA aquiring Blizzard entertainment.

hmm I dunno. They still have epic and id software among other companies to challenge. in Regards to RPGs and real time strategy they will pretty much be unchallenged. Since they were already producing decent RPGS

well Blizzard have a large rating on games sold on PC and with the help of Microsoft, it could steadily expand and produce more due to large cash reserve ;) so it may become a possiblity that they can dominate even one genre of PC games, whether its RTS, hack and slash or whatever...

Well from a business standpoint. Microsoft would be very foolish not to sweep up this deal. It would make them money on 2 markets, And one they need to improve on a great deal (IE Xbox)

Of course the PC industry will benefit from this either way. More software, More games ^^

>if this deal goes through then does that mean the mac won't be seeing any more blizzard games?

Possibly, but MS have a stake in apple too, and have ported office and IE to it....
