Koudelka doesn't load Disc 2.

Hi there!

I've been waiting quite a long time for an update of ePSXe just to be able to play Koudelka. I don't know what's about that game that I always wanted to play it properly since those days I played with my friend's little brother at his home a long time ago.

I downloaded ePSXe 1.7.0 since the day it was available and it was until now that I gave it a try. Man, the game worked perfectly until it was time to change to Disc 2... it just doesn't work! The game just fails to load the second disc and freezes there. Has anyone had the same problem too?

I've tried using the "Run ISO" option directly with a CD image, I've also tried with the "Run CDROM" option with a mounted image on a virtual drive, and I've tried with the "Run CDROM" with an actual CD in my drive, but the game just won't load.

If anyone has a solution, please let me know.

Thanks for reading.

does it ask to change to disc2 and then doesnt, or just it isnt loading disc2 at all, or what's wrong?

if it asks to change to disc2 try "file > change disc > cdrom" instead

try it on another emulator and see what it does.

It's when the in-game screen tells you to "Insert Disc 2", so I do the "file > change disc > cdrom" routine (as you adviced), the game returns to the "Insert Disc 2" screen and nothing happens.

I've played a lot of games with ePSXe before (1.6.0, that is) and never had this problem with other games, either by using the ISOs directly with the emulator option available or by using mounted ISOs on a virtual drive. I almost never use real CDs to preserve my CD-ROM longevity, I made images from all my old CDs and that's how I play.

try it on another emulator and see what it does.
Hmmm... Well, it's an old game after all, it's just that I always wanted to give it a complete run but I guess I'd better find something else to do than to break my head playing old games.

There was a way to play the game (or so I read somewhere) using PCSX to play the videos and ePSXe to play the game. It was really weird as you had to swith emulators and save states that you'd load with the other emulator.

Well, if anyone finds a way to play Koudelka properly I'd be very thankful.

Peace!

what format is your image in? im assuming you are playing a PAL version considering your location so it might actually be the copy protection that is doing this.

I use CloneCD (CCD) format, but I've also tried with the IMG format files created when you make an image from a CD.

I doubt it's a copy protection issue here, as if it was the game would not have run at all. I think it's more of an emulator issue, as Koudelka was barely playable in ePSXe 1.6.0, and maybe the developers foresaw to check if this particular game would run perfectly after several hours of gameplay (i.e. reaching disc 2).

Anyway, I feel the need to give Parasite Eve II another run, so I'm gonna play it tonight with ePSXe 1.7.0 and see if there is any problem with this one.

theres several notable issues in disk swappin in 1.7 when mounting images directly, and a a couple of other games that have problems even with the CD.

from what i know PE2 has problems on just about every emulator out there so be ready for it.

Really? I've played that one with ePSXe 1.6.0 to death several times no prob.

Actually I tried Metal Gear - Solid as I always wanted to play it on an emulator. Using both: Pete's D3D and Pete's DX6 D3D video plugins ran it horrible, freezing and resuming the action every second. With P.E.Op.S. it ran smoothly but with those horrid blurry graphics, so after and hour of tweaking all those plugin options and attempting to run the game like about a zillion times I finally gave up and deleted the game from my HD.

Hmmm, maybe it's time to give Valkyrie Profile another run...

Valkyrie profile has no problems as long as you don't savestate during speech scenes where audible speech is heard.

Yeah, I remember it was a pain to get it running as the game could freeze during an audio sequence. Somehow, I remember I could get to play it well by tweaking an option on the virtual drive manager (I think it was something about analog reading or something). Anyway, I could finish that one on ePSXe 1.6.0 several times, so I'll give it a run sometime soon and post a thread here if anything comes up. :thumb:

eternal spu 1.4 or 1.5 with the square fixes enabled will be ok, still freezes on occasion due to states though so memsave regularly.

Guess what? As I mentioned earlier, I started playing Parasite Eve II and when prompted to insert disc 2 and doing the File > Change Disc > ISO (or CDROM, both) the disc just won't load!

It seems it's an emulator issue then, so I'll try to play Koudelka again with ePSXe 1.7.0 and when prompted to change disc I'll make a saved state first and then try to load the disc with ePSXe 1.6.0, then make another saved state and return to play with 1.7.0, I guess that will work.

I tried making a copy of my 1.7.0 saved states of PEII and used them with 1.6.0 and the second disc loaded perfectly. I just can't accept the developers of ePSXe let such an important feature like changing discs slip by, if that's really the case here. :(

Does anyone else has had the same problem when trying to change a disc?

no, its specific disks only.

Koudelka works !
Try this :

After killing the boss of the cd1 (the clones of your team) the save will be activated.Save (or not) and open the next door.Walk a little bit and you will start a cinematic.
Once the priest says "have you find something interesting koudelka ?"
(or in french "avez vous trouvé quelque chose koudelka ?") then press immediately echap.
Click on Insert cd2 or iso cd 2
run
you will see a cinematic of a giant plant so skip it 'cause it bugs.
Just after you'll start down into a dead end : cd 2 starts ! ^^

Do like this for each cd change.

Thank you!

I've found that when using ePSXe 1.6.0 I have no problems in changing discs, but with 1.7.0 all the games (at least the ones I've tried) end up freezing. My guess is that I'm using an old version of the CD plugin; anyway, I'm not thinking to give neither Koudelka or Valkyrie Profile a run anytime soon as I've no time in playing those anymore.

On the other hand, if other people had the same freezing problem when changing a disc while using 1.7.0 then the problem surely would be with the emulator but as it doesn't seem to be the situation then, most likely, the problem is in my configuration or my PC specs.

Thank you for your advice, I hope it had helped other people out there, C U. :thumb:

its a bug when playing from images and trying to swap the discs. playing directly from the disc or (sometimes) mounting it on a virtual drive will get around it. you could also get through the disc swap on another version of epsxe or another emulator, save once you are through it, and then continue on with whatever you were using before.

to load the second disc.... when the last cinematic fade, in the right- low corner you`ll see "koudelka" there press "escape", then just press "change disc" and.... bingo, if you wait until the logo "change 2nd disc" then the emu stop responding. saludos desde mexico :thumb:

now in spanish
para cargar el segundo disco... cuando el ultimo cinematic se acaba, en la esquina inferior derecha veras "koudelka" ahi presiona escape, entonces presionas "change disc" y eso es todo :)

Koudelka change disc epsxe

Hi I think I may have found a solution to this, during the cutscene from disc 1 where Koudelka is searching through the rubbish, press start to skip the cutscene and then press esc immediately to minimize epsxe, from there change discs to disc 2 and that will automatically take you to the next part of the game on disc 2, worked for me. :emb:
