Here's my problem (converting DVD video to XViD)...

I know how to rip files off of a DVD, and I'm rather good with XVid. However, I can never seem to get my AVISynth scripts right.

What's the best way to load a VOB into AVISynth? I admit I haven't tried anything in ages, so there may be new stuff I don't know about. Can AVISynth handle the audio, or do I have to rip the audio and feed it into VDub seperately?

I probably should post this at the Doom9 forums, but I'm too lazy. :p
Oh come on.. take the easy way out. ;)

Just copy the VIDEO_TS folder off the dvd to your desktop or where ever.. load up the program vStrip select the main vob. Set the settings to whatever you want them to be. People say that vStrip is hard to use but it's not. Just add the main vob then where you see the 'Is Vob' have that checked and select clib only. Next click on the IFO tab.. open the IFO that's in the folder.. the rest is kinda done (unless you want to mess around with it). Go to output. Give it an output name. Select all substreams. Then click run. Watch it make one vob file which contains the whole movie (it does it pretty quick actually). Then open up Flaskmpeg 0.78.39. Once opened.. go ahead and open your newly created file and the rest is up to you. You set up the video format.. which would be XviD... the video size.. audio format.. etc.. when done.. go to Run.. Start Conversion! Grab a soda.. and watch the thing convert. You can even stop the conversion and watch what it converted. If you are happy with the results then go ahead and let the whole thing convert.. if not then.. eh.. don't know. I do my XviD's like this and I never have a problem. I did have problems the first time around.. depending on how you set up the XviD settings it might give you issues with the video and audio.. meaning they don't synth.. this only happened to me when I had Quarterpel checked.. don't understand why. It works sometimes then it doesn't. I had Quarterpel checked for Final Destination 2 and it worked but for a Staind DVD.. it slowed down the video.

I feel for ya, man. It takes me about an hour for each SVCD -> DVD conversion. It got so hectic, I ended up giving up and only doing this with my newer SVCDs. :)
Well the problem I've got is htat most of my series are all over the place (case in point: Angelic layer is on 20 different CDs, and it's only a 26 episode series). It takes me a good half an hour just to copy down the data to my machine for a 4.5 gig DVD, and then Nero doesn't pick up the DVD burner as a 4x, so it takes another 1/2 hour to burn the data at 2x

I use DVD Decrypter for all my ripping... it seems to work pretty well. Is there anything vStrip can do that DVD Decrypter cannot? And I think I'll try out FlaskMPEG. I've heard of it before, but never messed with it.

On a side note, VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 is out.

I just use GordianKnot to DivX any videos

Hey Kane. Just curious. What is better for download quality. AVI or divx? Lets say they are both the same size 320x240 or something ... what is better? Or is mpg just smaller but retains the quality?

DivX = AVI
DivX is an AVI codec, like Indeo or XviD
Mpeg1 = Shite quality per megabyte (A 300Meg MPG will compress to a 50Mb AVI with little or no quality loss)

Well I wasnt speaking of divx. I just meant a raw AVI file. But divx is nice quality. Especially with the right Divx player. ;)

Thanks Kane. Also if anyone else wants to post any other video related tutorials here Im fine with that. ;) But all I ask is that you make them simple and clear. ;) :D

Raw AVI is huuuuuuge.
It's bigger than MPEG-2 (DVD) movies.

I know. When Im recording in game movies for my site they are about 200mb and I can bring em down to about 20mb with no image loss at all!

Although I do resize. So a tip for people is to make sure when there recording or ripping STR's etc to use TMPEG encoder to convert to mpeg. It works great! Just go to my videos section and see what I mean. I use TMPEG to convert and merge all my movies. ;)

Wrong. :p

AVI is an audio/video packaging format. The use of AVI does not dictate what codecs are used. Some other packaging formats are Ogg, Matroska and VOB.

DivX (and XviD, and 3ivX) are MPEG-4 video codecs. MPEG-4 video doesn't have to be stored in a AVI file, it can be in Ogg, or Matroska, or QuickTime, or MP4.

@Razor Blade: FlaskMPEG won't run on my PC. :( It gives the following error on startup. I've emailed the developers, I hope this gets fixed.

Delete the AVIOutput.settings file in the settings folder. The program crashed the first time for me as well. I deleted that file and it worked. There's also a reg file that fixes this (I think) on Doom9.org under Support Utils. See if that helps.

Herm, I will have to try that. I use svcd myself so it will be great to have a bit more quality.

I am encoding XVCD movie right now. Well actually an SXVCD.

In order to make an XSVCD just go as if you were making a regular SVCD but then when you go to the place where you save the movie uncheck start encoding immediately. Then go in the TMPEG folder and look for the extras folder click on load by the settings and then open unlock. Then change the bitrate to 2500 - 2700 (no higher) And the resolution to 720X480 and then you can start! Hope that helps out. ;)
