Well, in the Options menu, one of the settings you can change is the savetype. There are a lot of different savetypes, and each individual game has one savetype that works best for it (e.g. Mega Man ZX and Mega Man ZX Advent are optimized for the savetype EEPROM 64k, or something like that). Search around these forums (particularly in the compatibility topics) to find the savetypes for specific games.

I hope that answers your question, but really, your question is extremely vague. If my answer didn't help, then please try to be more specific with your question.

For DS games your only option is to create an ingame save (the way you would normally save on a DS...for which you first have to do what speyeker said). Save states are not supported yet.

For GBA games you can either save ingame (for GBA savetypes are automatically selected so no need to set it yourself) or use create a save state. No$gba was originally a GBA emulator which is why savestates work for GBA games, DS emulation is only a recent development.

I think it's partially a good thing that there are no save states for the DS emulation. It helps to discourage cheating.

For example, I played the Mega Man Zero games, and they were really hard so I had to use save states. With the ZX series on the DS, the games are much easier, so save states aren't even necessary.

That site will help no more than checking AdvanceScene or NDSlister (or whatever the site was called) and then dividing whatever savetype they provide by 8 for no$gba's backup type.
