pentium 4's arent generally good for emulation, they tend to be increadibly slow, but the rest shouldnt be a massive factor in it.
 
At this stage I would say that that PC is not good enough...future versions might require less resources though. Shash has said that this version relies heavily on CPU power and I know from experience that the P4 2.6Ghz is a piece of junk. People with Dual-core processors or at least 64 bit processors get much more out of emulation at this stage.
 
heh the p4 2.6ghz was fast and awesome until recently, when games like supreme commander came out and emulators like the PS2 and NDS started becoming usable. ah well =x
 
Nope, the P4 2.6Ghz as always been crap...I had one...and it's never had a WOW factor like my current AMD Athlon64 3700+ has.

well, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the emulation doesn't get any benefit from dual core, or 64bit, cpus....
 
64 bit processors are more powerfull than 32 bit processors so they obviously have more power to run emuatlor's with.
Dual-core's are awesome at multi-tasking so they can easily dedicate a whole processor to the emulator...making them also more powerfull...than regular 32bit processors.

What I meant there, is that Desmume is single core right now, so the rest of cores would remain idle, thus the multiple cores not giving any benefit. But (and I'm uncertain about this, but I've already read some reports of it) seems that even a single core of a multi core CPU might be faster than the equivalent in a single core CPU, but I don't know as I own a Northwood Pentium 4 at 2.6ghz :(
 
I dont think that NDS emulation needs realy a dual core cpu to run full speed.. You see the NDS is not such powerful.

the emulator just need to be finished, there's no need of a dual core for nds emulation. see n64? even slow pcs can run in a playable speed.

Could you all stop spectulating on the power needed to emulate the DS? I love serious discussion with some real data and knowledge, but this is not what we're getting here.

Comparing it with the current Nintendo64 emulators is stupid as hell, it's a rather different architecture, not to mention that not a single bit of HLE is used in DS emulation. HLE is rather fast, but is far from accurate, and is error prone. For those curious enough, checking the requirements of the Project64 LLE graphics plugin will get you some ideas of how much power could be needed, but it will be inexact probably.

So, next time you talk about requirements of DS emulators, better know what you're talking about, or let people who knows talk :p
 
I'm just guessing here... but will it be twice or even three times the specs needed to emulate a Gameboy Advance properly? Umm... just guessing? :D I never worked on the Nintendo DS to begin with... but I did try to work with the GBA a bit... and I thought that they would be somewhat similar?
 
Another coder tried some multi threading with desmume, the results werent that good.
He said it lost sync very easy, so a better work has to be done in that area.

BTW, processors with Hyperthreading are Pentium 4....

I think (and I most probably am WRONG) PCSX2 takes advantage of both cores because the emulator takes advantage of one core and the ZeroGS plugin takes advantage of the other. In order to take advantage of both cores on any other emulator, devs should do something like that; I mean, split the work into two different processes, which I believe to be outstandingly difficult.
