I just upgrade m monitor from the good old 15 inch to a 19 inch.
I used 800X600 resolution on the 15 inch. Should I change the resoultion on the new 19 inch monitor? Or should I just keep the same res?

What is the best resolution for a 19 inch monitor?
I am using a viewsonic.

Depends....

Did the rest of your pc change as well? I mean if the PC got a huge performance boost then you might want to consider it. If your PC is quite slow (Like mine) then you migght want to stick with 800X600 since the games will slow down significantly.

NOTE: The PSX uses 640X480.

640x480 is the playstations max resolution iirc.
And you cannot get 640x480 on a normal television without using interlace (its that flickering you see when you boot up a psx on the early menu's before a cd is inserted)

Most games don't use 640x480 simply because that flickering gets annoying after a while and tends to cause a headache.

The resolution most games typically use are 320x240.

As for me, for ePSXe I prefer to use 1280x960.

I have a PIII 733Mhz, 512 SDRAM, Asus Geforce 2 MX and SoundBlaster Live!

Which resolution will be best for me?

According to fivefeet8, the best resolution is one near multiple of the psx original resolution, because is causes less pixel stretching. I would say 960x720 is a good choice. This way you can get a good resolution, and enabling FSAA won't hit the performance as it would in a higher resolution.

Yeah.. For the most part.. Especially in 2d\3d games.. The 2d backgrounds get horribly stretched in higher resolutions.. But in fully 3d games, the pixel stretching is less noticeable.. Even at high resolutions, you still see lots of jaggies though.. With 4xFSAA at lower resolutions, it looks better IMO.. 2d and 3d..

I like 1024x768 best, since it's my desktop resolution and
using it won't cause any monitor resolution switches. Despite
that I've never noticed much improvement by choosing a
multiple of the original psx resolution.

Maybe that's just my computer, though.

Well, speaking in general, for a 19" monitor the optimal resolution would be 1280x1024 (for 17" it's 1024x768, 15" = 800x600) but for less stretching a multiple native psx resolution would be best. I echo Zephon and fivefeet8's suggestion of 960x720. Still, you should try to find your best gaming resolution.

I have a '17 View Sonic monitor and I run at either 640x480 or 800x600 w/out FSAA and w/screen smoothing on. My computer consists of an Athlon T-Bird 1.2 ghz, GEForce 2 GTS 32 MB video card, 640 megs of PC133 ram, and a Sound Blaster Live Value sound card. All my games run and look fine.

1600x1200 max detail and anisotropic filtering on.

FSAA is off. Doesn't help anything at that res.

Looks a lot better than using low crappy res 640x480 and 4X FSAA

also smooth screen is off... I haven't found a game where it really does make a difference. All I know is that at 1600x1200 I get between 15-30fps with smooth screen on.

Oh yeah I got a 17" Samsung 700NF flat screen!

The only game i've had slowdown on was Metal Gear Solid at 1600x1200 during the cutscenes when the motion blur kicks in, its mostly due to my graphic cards 32MB of mem.
See http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11807 for an explanation as to why MGS runs fine for me at 1280x960 yet during the cutscenes at 1600x1200 is slowdown city.

My machine spec is...

PIII 700 (oc'ed to 800, fsb set at 114)
512MB of mem
Creative 32MB GeForce 2 GTS
Windows 2000 Pro
etc

Hmm... the monitor on my 'puter goes up 1024x768, but I use 800x600 mainly because that gives a good speed, and 1024x768 moves the screen off to one side, and I'm too lazy to reach up to the controlls to fix it every time I play a game.

However the monitor on my brothers (read: my spare part) computer only goes up to 640x480, so he can't play his RPG maker :D

Hrmm the fact of the matter is, anything that is a multiple of 320 by 240 will give you the best texturing quality/res/speed.. 640 x 480 for most people. And if I could figure out how 960x720 would prolly be the best, but I can't select it on Petes config menu... (anyone help me out here?) so I just use 1280 x 960, very nice but I can't use both 4xfsaa and smoothing. When I enable smoothing I drop to about 30-40 fps... not good. (well that is on highly 2d games like ff9... :( )

So... all in all I would suggest 960x720, but how the hell do you activate it??? If it's plugin based perhaps pete can hook us up. otherwise I should be able to get it on my monitor... =/...

OK looks like the MX cards are identified as NV11

here is how to do it!!!

from the start menu click "run"

then type "regedit" without the quotes and click ok

Now press CTRL+F

and type "NV11" in there

Ok just to be sure on every NV11_Modes you see. Right click it and select "modify"

Then paste this overwritting what's in there.

Just to be sure I would do that for every NV11_Modes, NV11DDR_Modes, and NV11GL_Modes

Just keep hitting F3 after you find the first one to find them all. After that reboot and that resolution should be selectable now.
