Ati vs Nvidia

What can I use to benchmark these maps?

My program does not support these maps.

However I can tell you the speed is very crappy in DM-Icetomb map.

I did see as low as 13fps when the action gets intense, you do see 30+ but mostly stays in the 20s or lower.

That is at 1024x768

4X FSAA and 8X AF.

Yikes...

I guess this is where those dets 5 come in handy :)

When they do modify the Dets 5 for quality like they did with these 45.23 I will be switching to those for sure.

I must say 4xS is still my favorite form of AA, It may be a little less quality than ATI's 4x On Edge Removal. But the texture Quality enhancements more than make up for that.

I recently reinstalled my geforce 4 Ti 4200 on my secondary machine. And I play Everquest on that machine at 1024x768 at 4xS AA, And 4x Anistropic Filtering and its a baby.

Depends what you run. For some games 4XS is not such performance hit for others it is.

However 4XS does look much better.

In fact there is very little difference between 4XS and 8XS except that 8XS is killer. It has such a huge performance hit. Even worse than 12X FSAA. Yes the FX can do 12X FSAA lol.

12X should be ok for emulators I guess.

Whenever I can I do use 4XS. Is my fav along with 8XS.

Of course for emus I just crank it up all the way... no slowdowns whatsoever.

no Surprise. Even Geforce 4's can do 8x/12x with no slowdown in espsxe at 1024x768.

Not exactly. Full hardware framebuffer effects slow to a crawl with any FSAA with Geforce4ti's. The fx seem to do them full speed with any FSAA though. ;)

I have never used framebuffer effects. They have never been all that important too me. I'd rather use 2xSal and 6x AA. Which works fine on my radeon 9500 Pro.

and just use 8xS on my Geforce 4. I took out my Radeon 8500 AIW DV. I just cant stand its AF. 8500 Has got to have some of the worst mipmap Banding, And whats funny is my 9500 Pro Does Billinear filtering in performance too but it doesnt band like the 8500. *sigh* Whats sad is I think the 8500 AIW DV, at 4x Quality AA, looks better than a Voodoo5, a Geforce 4 at 12x. And my radeon 9500 pro at 6x. it's purely beautiful AA :(

Just unplayable at anything but emulation.

>Yeah as long as you don't touch 2XSAI and Screen smoothing it should fine for a GF4.

Uh...I have both 2x sai and fsaa (4xS FSAA) turned on and I get at the minimum 80+ FPS (avg 200+ but when the framebuffer effects hit it dives to 80-90), which I would hardly call "slow to a crawl"....

I still wanna get a better card tho. Don't know which one will be better by the time I save up $500 (CAD) tho...

I did say Full Hardware FB effects. Not the mixed software/hardware settings. Hmm. Maybe newer drivers fixed it.

yeah....I turned on the full hardware fb effects, unless it is wrong:

oops....seems like I did do somethin wrong... changed framebuffer textures to full hardware. no changes in fps :) EDIT: Actually, I'm now getting massive FSP-600+....and now the slowdown doesn't even happen??!?!

Hehe. Well, looks like driver updates fixed them. I found it strange as well when my ti4600 was slowing down with hardware FB effects+8xSFSAA and my fx wasn't since their FB write/read speeds are the same.

But then again, which game did you test it on? Not the swirl effects in FF7 I hope. Test it on FB heavy games like MGS, Vagrant Story, FF9 summons.

hmm.....I just used FF9 , Chrono Cross and BOF4. I don't really know which ones are FB effects tho so I just played each for a few minutes, trying this and that. :emb:

FB effects are the blur effects used in FF9 summons. Try the last summon in FF9 from the princess. Get into a battle with crono cross(watch the battle transition) and use some heavy blurring magic. BOF4 doesn't use much FB effects except in the level with wavy blurry fire effects.

just tried it (CC): No problems there either. I think they must have fixed it....
