An idea for rom compression (Save up to 600 mb per rom)

A lot of people want compression support on nulldc, to save some disk space... but i have an alternate idea.

Just a thought.... For people that have a lot of dreamcast cd images on his hard drive (cdi, ngr, etc) and want to save some space.

A lot of dreamcast isos have a file called "dummy", that is just some file making space so the burned cd have = 700 mb. For example, some games are just 50 mb, but the iso is like 700 mb... That is 650 mb of pure crap (the "dummy" file).

So, i came up with the idea of editing the iso files, erasing the dummy file and then make a self-boot cd image with bootdreams or something like that. The thing is, that i have no clue how to use that program, so, if there is someone that knows.... I really want to know if this idea can be implemented, so i can reduce my 20 gigs of dreamcast roms on my hard drive to 5 gigs or less.

Can anybody try this?

just compress your gdi image using 7zip (it's free), most of my image got reduced to almost 30% original size. for example, my skies of arcadia both disc that almost 2.4 GB, now only take less than 800 MB on haddrive.
sice its in 7zip archieve format, it won't be playable, but you only need to extract it back to use it with nullDC :)
this way, you'll get your image exactly the same with your disc (that you dumped), if i'm not mistaken dummy file also had it use (don't wally know what exactly)

That would defeat the purpose.

Its possible. This is done on PSX iso, some avid psx encoders have edited ISO to remove all dummy files. The problem is that not that many people know exactly where and which file is the dummy file. You would have some programing knowledge in the dreamcast environment.

It would be pretty much alot of trail and error. But its should be done.

Sure.

I have a cdi. I mount it in Daemon. Load Exoboot. Choose “Mode 1” (CD to image) , check remove dummy file automatically. Next screen, select the drive, pick a folder, chose to make cdi.

Now it either hangs here (installed all the VS runtimes) or it creates a bunch of files/bins but never once a cdi with the dummy removed. Is this the right process? Does it have anything to do with the fact that my drive says the cdi is only 245mb when mounted when the actual cdi is 700mb?

Bumpie.

This can help alot of people save alot of HD space, even if NullDC supports compressed stuff soon. With no dummies and compression, all of DC games can be 100mbs or so. That would be amazing.

Anyway, what is the proper way to remove dummy files from cdis?

i have a better idea burn your images and play from CDVD driver. this is so much more space free... i have over 80 games :p

Your an idiot, that defeats the purpose of getting the data off the original GD.

80 CDs take a lot more physical space than one hard drive.

...Unless CDs are the size of a penny in your world. Where do you live?!
putos :D your are an idiots, is no possible the pursose of this thread, i have downloaded many games and this is are of relative sise from somes megas hasta 850 o 1 gb(in format disjugle, alcohol o nrg) , is no true what all games still has been small this have than have 700 megas. i know this fine. your does no know nothing.:rotflmao:

it would be great to have this feature for everything that involves isos. it would be cool to not have 1gig wasted for every game.

for some games it doesnt really make a difference ( project justice -> 966mb, or vampire chronicle ->1001mb). then again some games compress well too (crazy taxi -> 105mb!!) compare that to the standard uncompressed 1.1gig filesize. its only 1/10 the size!

but hey, as long as it saves space, im happy.
