I've started getting back into ps1 games and the first thing that always slaps me in the face when I do so is the blurry text that appears in any game i play. I've got petes running with and i've tried a number of different configurations but i never seem to get it right, hoping someone here can provide some help. Here is a picture of the offending text from vagrant story.

I feel like if i could solve that issue it would make other aspects of the game look better as well... so anyone know what to do :D

not gonna happen, the fonts are extremely low resolution... you can upscale them some, but that just adds blur...think of them more like an old 8 bit computer and an 8 bit sprite... you have a grid 8x8 and each letter has to be made in that grid (not exactly how it is but just a general example)...there is no way to increase resolution cause it isn't there to begin with and no way to say well, I am going to do xxx to fonts via the emulator cause there is no set way of doing them in a game. every game handles them in their own way, to the hardware it is just more graphics on screen. even @ 1090p resolution, fonts will still look bad..even a full screen smoothing/blur, which makes them look smoother, doesn't work so well cause it blurs everything..

the lowest my monitor will go is 800x600, but when I set it to that it still stretches the screen to the monitors 16:9 resolution, I've tried messing with the settings to get it to keep its 4:3 resolution with black borders on the sides but nothing is working, starting to get stumped >:\

*LMAO just figured it out after posting that, my monitor's options will only unlock the option for 4:3 resolution after i've chosen one in the graphics card settings, then I can press the options button on the side of my monitor to get the 4:3 ratio, jesus.

Ok after experimenting with many combinations I've come to the conclusion that my best option for the clearest image that looks similar to the ps1 original is to do the lowest possible desktop resolution with the games native resolution in window mode (320x240). This makes a window that doesn't cover much of the screen however, so to get a bigger window you have to start sacrificing image clarity on text and textures. 640x480 is double the games native resolution so you get basically double the pixilation from the native image. If my monitor supported 320x240 I guess that would give the clearest image at full screen.

BEST option, if you want PSX graphics is to instead use the software plugin..it will be full screen at native psx resolution ...

and actually I think the native PSX res was 640x480 for ntsc.. or close to it... internally it could go lower, but the output was always around 640

Ok for reference here is the game running at my screen's native resolution 1920x1080

And here is the same scene running in software mode

However in software mode i get about 5 fps and its basically unplayable.

Still need to try retro arch, but if its an improvement over either of these i'll be using it from now on lol

Just gave retroarch a go, the graphics were about in between what i was getting before, but it also ran like absolute booty so thats going to need tweaking as well. Overall I feel like the software emulation gets you closer to the ps1 original, and with tweaking could be the clear victor, hardware emulation with cool shaders has it's place of course.
