they're just so damn AOL-speak
dude, even when i did have AOL (hmm, 5 years ago or so? i think i got DSL for christmas in 2000 or 2001...) i didnt say lol or rofl or any of that.
in fact, here is a little story for everyone. you dont get to peer into hushypushy's gender confused (man or woman??), lesbian loving, juggling, photo taking, online privacy self very often (except through livejournal) but uh, here's one.
i started chatting online (like aim and stuff) probably in 7th grade. when i was a freshman in high school (9th grade, 15 years old) i got a girlfriend. we chatted on the phone and online all the time. eventually i guess it bothered her, but she came right and said, "matt, you talk like a freakin robot. you never use any emoticons, you never saw lol or haha or anything. i can never tell how you feel online". and it's true. i used to just type everything like i was saying it outloud. in real life you dont need to physically say "haha" or force an expression because the way you talk determines it. so from then on, i started using "haha" and certain smileys.
even later on when i started to meet more nerds like me (like my best friend chris, aka イタルナル11 on the boards [yes i know the misspelling]) i started using more emoticons in my IRC and aim, like >_>, >_<, ^__^, @_@, and such and such.
so i guess it's like what D.D. said. originally i was trying to be so...cool...or something. either that or i was just an internet n00b. now i feel i can convey my feelings fairly well on the internet (and even convince people im a girl :evil
