Lunar The Silver Star and Lunar II Eternal Blue are two of the most beloved Classic RPGs and they both feature romance as the story's spine. Like with everything saying that something as the main plot sucks is an euphemism as everything revolves around how well implemented it is. In the case of the games I mentioned it was greatly done and therefore it was a hit, sadly GameArts couldn't pull such a thing ever again so they kept remaking them... shame really.
/adds these two games to the 'to play' list ;)

GameArts you say? I found Grandia 2 to be one of the best RPG's I have ever played, if you say those games are even better :D

Come on, don't tell me you never seen Kaiser Sigma preaching about Lunar games.

Kaiser is a Lunar evangelist :joke:

But the games are great, that's for sure. I've played the first, and I can attest it (and I already got the second one).

BTW, play the original versions on the Sega CD, not the crappy remakes on the PSX.

I yet have to see a Sega CD IRL for the first time

Wasn't he worshipping his Sakura Taisen collection? :p

i liked the remakes on PSX, but i'll have to assume thats because i never played the originals. that being said, Cid is probably safe to play the remakes since he won't know what he's missing.

and here's my little inequality for some of the WD games: lunar 1 > first half of grandia 2 > lunar 2 > crap > second half of grandia 2 > grandia 1

The thing is... you liked the remakes because graphics weight heavily for you. And here comes the rebuttal to that thing of "graphics >> music". Lunar TSS featured horrible graphics for a Sega CD games yet the plot and the music made it one of the most beloved RPGs out there. Same with Lunar EB though this one featured slightly improvements over graphics.

Second, you didn't like Grandia 1 because you can't stand kids as protagonists. So your equation ends up like this: (Lunar TSS <<>> Lunar II EB) > Grandia 1 >> Grandia 2

Since Grandia 1 features a better plot than Grandia 2 and obviously making aside the fact that graphicwise the original lunars are ugly both are far superior to the Grandia installments.

no, it had nothing to do with the graphics. i didn't even know there was a difference in graphics. as games, not comparing it to the originals, i enjoyed them and maybe that is because i don't know what was changed with the porting. thats all i'm saying.

actually, i liked grandia 2 because of ryugo. i don't even remember the plots, only the way i felt about the game at the time. and grandia 1 left a bad taste in my mouth. yeah, the kids didn't help, also those 3 soldier ladies were annoying. that one amazon chick that joins the group who's husband is a giant walrus (or was he a yak? i don't remember) was stupid aswell. overall, the characters in the game did nothing for me (and excuse me for not remembering names of characters i didn't like).

and grandia 1 has a better plot than grandia 2? that would be your opinion.
i do agree, however, that the lunar series is better than the grandia series as a whole.

Grandia 2's plot: I'm a badass because I had a sucky past. 2 hours later I become involved in a love triangle with a goodie doer blondie and a *****y red haired. Another 2 hours later I become a bloody pansy who doesn't know where his place on the world is.

End of the plot.

Kega Fusion is an excellent Sega CD emulator, and will emulate both games flawlessly. And you know the rest ;)

He's a long time Lunar worshipper. The ST gods appeared only recently in his life (he's a born-again Sakura Taisen fan).

Well, I think that experiencing the originals first would be better, since they're better games anyway.

Wow, I didn't know that Grandia 1 was that bad.
/me pushes it to last positions in his "to play" list

well, if you like children as your main characters, and the non-children characters to be lame and annoying, give it a shot.

you forgot to tell me grandia 1's plot. or is it not worth mentioning?

Could be, but that'd be beyond the point I tried to make. Everyone regards Grandia II's arguments as "OMG" because Ryudo acts like badass during the first part of the game (which by the way, I loved that) but soon degenerates into the typical archetype of a hero who gets involved into a love triangle, chicks are hurt and the guy becomes extremely soft-hearted. About the rest, Milenia was quite good, Elena was average, Roan had a good part thanks to the Valmar heritage, Marik was dull and Tio was proably the best after "first-half Ryudo" and Skye.

i'd have to agree 100% with everything you just said. once ryudo becomes a pansy, the game becomes dull and cliched.

You forgot about Melfice, he played a big part in what I consider the best part about the game: The hunt for the truth behind Ryudo.

Melfice wasn't a protagonist which is why I did not name him. As for the best part of the game, as far as I am concerned whenever Skye talked it was a good moment... the part about Ryudo's past was in my opinion too typical.

What a pompous fool
Hehe, that first sentence he spoke I thought: WTF?? oO :p

Grandia 2 was bland on the story part, but I still found it fun to play (but yes it got old) I like the charators besides the kid...but yeah...I do recomend it for playing...but don't expect a 10/10....well don't expect that for any game..or even anything....

Grandia 2 good IMO, the characters were ok, I like Milenia a lot :D though
this reminds me a little the psychological status of Fei in XG (no spoiler).
The only big flaw in this game is its extreme shortness: 30-35 hours and... the end :(
