well SNES9x supports the SDD-1 packs, does it not? its fine so far. oh well, there's different schools of thought for everything i suppose.

but the part that really bugs me is how they say you arent supposed to copy your .cfg file. i have no problem with them, hell i like em with VBA. but...if you cant copy em you have to reconfigure. with registry this wouldnt be a problem

Actually, IIRC, Snes9X now supports SDD-1 decompression without the packs. Personally I don't mind the packs right now, and I don't plan on playing SO until a final patch is released.

As far as registry entries vs. INI files. Bad news, but n00bs are just as confused by either one, so it doesn't really matter to me in that respect. I perfer text-based files though simply because they are easier to deal with.

does it? i have 1.42, but i havent used it much since switching to ZSNES. i still have the packs tho, so if i want to play SFA2 or Star Ocean there you go

Expect the next version probably early on next year (the Dejap team are finalising their SO patch and even have a secret forum on the ZSNES Board and Dark Force, Tomato and Cidolfas have been very active lately!). The new version (or at least a new version) will be released simultaneously with the patch.

It'll have all the features that haven't been commited to the WIPs yet from the Highly Experimental builds such as the anti-flickering fix for SMRPG build, new SuperFX core that works with Starfox 2 (and others) perfectly build, and the improved Square game music build, as well as the SDD-1 decompression (which hasn't had a Highly Experimental build)!

Scale2x hasn't been put in yet, that could be in a WIP rather than next release I guess... Perhaps netplay will also be fixed along the line.

Exciting times! And the best thing is the WIPs to tide us over, although they are lacking several *major* features of the new version and some surprises which only the team know about!

If you compare the latest WIP with 1.36, you can easily see how ZSNES has massively progressed. So much so, that I haven't used Snes9x properly for yonks despite being slightly more advanced chip-wise at the moment.

i recently switched to ZSNES, i dont like the way SNES9x just .... is. Zsnes has better sound and i like how i can play 640x480 windowed (cant do it with SNES9x, in the "true" way, i guess you can just resize every time...

At the moment, Snes9x is riddled with horrible bugs (at least it is for me) making it practically unusable. I get the "No disk" problem (everytime I want to load a rom it asks for a disk- extremely annoying and completely unfixable), the filters are messed up in Windowed and fullscreen modes (black border and static at the bottom), and the emulator does not work with nVidia's automatic bilinear filtering (Kreed filters look terrible). To top this all off, it flickers in my games occasionally thanks to a new video issue that affects nVidia cards introduced with 1.40 I believe.

On the other hand you have ZSNES, with perfect video (with nVidia filtering) and all the hq filters, much, much better sound and is faster than Snes9x too and is fully open source unlike Snes9x so you can compile straight from the CVS if you want. The developers of Snes9x have a tough time on their hands sorting these bugs out. There is a massive list of bugs in the Snes9x Tech Support and Bug Tracking forum for them to deal with, I hope they can manage them and bring back the days where Snes9x was a true rival to ZSNES. (Don't get me wrong, the teams really aren't rivals, but they are rivals in terms of how often I use them both!).

really? I thought Snes9x is an open source project itself? :p

SDD-1 compression emulates the SDD-1 chip on the fly, which requires more CPU power. The gfx packs (AFIAK) are dumped from the SNES after being processed by the SDD-1 chip inside the SNES. The difference? SDD-1 takes place immidiatly and works on all SDD-1 games. gfx packs are specific for each game.

-Elly

The graphics packs are also not quite 100% perfect, and may have some missing stuff when they were trimmed. This may not amount to much, but the SDD-1 algorithm could never have missing graphics because it is decompressing the graphics from the rom itself. Unless you're pretty good at SFA2 and pull off super moves that might have been trimmed off, your unlikely to notice much difference at all. The n00bs however will not need to even know the gfx packs even existed for these games.

You can copy the config file just fine. I sure do, and I haven't had any problems.

yeah but Esturk said this:

Yes that is true Raziel. But according to the Zsnes authors, you should delete your old zsnes.cfg before running the updated .exe.
not sure what the difference would be tho.

No it isn't a dumb reason. They are not adding the SDD-1 compression until the final Star Ocean patch is finished to prevent n00bs flooding the ZSNES board with requests or problems. It will be in ZSNES very soon, and you have gfx packs anyway until then.
excuse me but i didn't see any of this "flood" on Snes9X board and also, i don't think n00bs wanna play Star Ocean.
SFA2 maybe (assuming they know it was released for the snes), but Star Ocean...

C'mon, we're talking about snes, not gamecube or ps2. Most people that use zsnes or snes9x are real retrogamers, not w4r3z k1d3z.

And using the registry is a backwards step. Visualboy Advance just got rid of the registry which is a good thing because it is easily alterable. A reg key is bad for many reasons, such as n00bs not knowing where the reg key is, as well as it being practically ineditable. A CFG/INI file can simply be deleted to "reset" the emulator much more safely than fiddling with registry settings.
hehe...you really seem to dislike n00bs!!!

Go hang out at the Zsnes boards before you say that, particularly at the DeJap Forum. You're dead wrong.

I've never actually seen them recommend deleting it with every version, only to try that as the first troubleshooting step if a new version is giving you trouble.

@mr.saraiva: You are most wrong. While it isn't so bad now, there used to be large amounts of complete newbies, and the conversation generally went something like this:

n00b: Help!!1 I've got a Star Ocean r0m, but the colors are all messed up!!! I can't see anything!!1! What should I do??

mod: Have you read the instructions?

n00b: What instructions???

mod: The ones at the top of this forum, in the post with bold letters that says Star Ocean instructions.

n00b: Oh.

And then they'll come back the next day complaining about something that is already explained in excruciating detail in the guide, that they somehow skipped.

Same here. Last time I used Snes9x was on my old K6-2. Needless to say it looked like crap and didnt run fullspeed. Then I get ZSNES and ran it perfect @ 1024X768 w/filtering and high quality sound. So I have stuck with it to this day.
