I don't see why FF9 was so popular. It was alright, but what made most people hate FF8. I not just asking this because FF8 is one of my favorite games. but it seems like the majority of the Internet web site where say a sucks and ahd nothing but praise for FF9. did I miss something?

FF8 had a sucky draw system. Other than that it was cool. FF9 had a simple to understand plot, and a good battle system. What hardcore RPG gamers want is not the simple plot, but one that needs analysing like FF7.
Edit: I missoed out that Joe Public likes his RPGs to be more simple than an idiot with a lobotomy.

i liked ff9 because it made laugh many times, but the battles were still endless... this made me stop playing it in the 3rd disc.
ff8 was like WOW but i stopped in the 1st disc, after sumonning like a hundred times....
battles in a rpg are what makes or destroy the game for me.

yup, thats right.there are too much battle. random battle s*cks. its better if you can prevent battles like chrono cross( you wont be in battle unless you touches the enemy.

Popular? It wasn't popular. At least here in Germany it sold far less units then FFVIII, partly due the crappy gameplay, partly due the crappy character- and worlddesign, partly due the boring and ridiculous characters, and so on, and so on.

Hmm.. what's FFs like without random battle? Well, I havent found any annoyance with the random battle, and I think that's pretty cool. IMO, the most annoying thing that ever happens in FFs would be the magic drawing system in FF8, it's boring as hell. Well, I have played FF4,5,6,7 and 8. But I havent got my hands on FF9, not sure how is it like.

FF9 isnt too bad for me, but I prefer FF8 over 9 like I do 7 over 8.
I think its the characters that I dont like in FF9... and perhaps the graphics. The Eidolons looked like shit.

FF9 is the best RPG in history.
Everything about it rox.

I don't see why everybody hates it, its a master piece:(

FF10 is my favourite FF, eclipsing 7 by a long way (and no, not just because it looks / sounds excellent, the plot and especially the battle and character development systems are amazing)
but the only one i havent actually played in the series is 9, so i cna't really comment on it yet :/

... Recca. The plot is simplistic at best, with little to analyse and few if any plot twists.

The Battle system suffered from the uselessness of trances, summons and magic at later stages, as you could easily do 9999 damage with a normal attack.

The characters, barring Vivi, didn't seem to develop at all. None of them seem to have to face themsleves like characters did in the previous episodes. Squall faced himself and then allowed himself to rely on others, Cloud had problems by the bucketload, Tifa faced the fact that she had lied to Cloud, Aeris died, Terra faced the fact taht she was half-human, Celes that she was a biological weapon.......

I didn't even care to finish it. I think they could ave down a much better job than they did on FF9. and I agree as for as the plot goes, I also like FF7 more I seemed to last for ever. (in a good way)

There must be something wrong with you, or you aren't the diehard RPG fan you claimn to be. Half the point of RPGs is deep plots with good undertones and twists, and character development.

I'm just not a fan of cartoony graphics. For the same reason I wasn't a fan of the Nintendo 64. For some reason I feel that if a company thinks I want to play a cartoon thats looks something out of pokemon then its an insult to me

The little black wizard outfit worked fine in the old nes and snes games because they were 2d sprites. when they converted it to PSX it looked like a dorky little charactor you'd see in a pokemon game.

A World can be magical and fantasy filled without little deformed charactors. It can also be magical and fantasy filled without trains, Helicopters, And mercenaries fro a program that never made any sense.

Chrono Cross is an example. Until I played Chrono Cross I believed that Square had completely lost its edge.

I thought Kuja was just homosexual.

FF9 was a very weak game because it tried to be something it wasn't. It wanted to revive some of what had made Final Fantasy great in the old days, but the flatness of the characters, and the simplistic, boring plot just caused the game to fail.

It was after playing FF9 and Chrono Cross that I truly realized that Square was just a shadow of its former self. Parasite Eve II was the last nail in the coffin. It's going to take quite some doing to make me respect Square once more.
