Why do you drink/not drink?

Kind of an interesting question I ask myself a lot. Why do you drink? Or in the opposite case, why do you not drink?

Some people drink just in social situations - a kind of ice breaker for people like me who are rather shy to meet other people. Some people drink when they're down. Some people drink out of boredom. And the reasons go on and on.

For me, it's a mixture of things. First, I drink socially - I'm a rather shy person and light social drinking has led to a few great friends. Sometimes I drink just because the **** tastes good. Seriously, a good homebrew beer, as I discovered to today, is damn delicious - much better than mass-market crap. Sometimes I drink because I'm depressed - not my proudest thing to admit because really, it doesn't solve anything. Sometimes I drink just because I have no other beverages to drink. ;)

So for the NGEmu drinkers - why do you drink? And for those who abstain from drinking - why don't you drink?

No.
Not only disliking drinking, but needing to ensure continued lucidity and control over thoughts and self.
Fun and social interaction dont require a state of drunken stupor.

That, and you dont risk getting mugged, abused or plainly drive a car off a cliff without realizing the risk you may constitute for the people in your vicinity. As long as there's control of excess...

becuase it's easier to move in on the drunk guys women when your sober.

I don't drink

But this is because when I was a lot younger I discovered I got badly violent when drunk so I decided stay off booze forever

To each his own, but these days I get uncomfortable to even be around others when they are drinking

hmm

i'm not a big drinker but i do drink a few times a week.

i'm kindof the opposite of a social drinker sometimes though; that is, i sometimes won't drink in public for 3 reasons:
1) I want to maintain a state of mind where i can think straight so i don't make bad decisions
2) I fear for drunk driving
3) I don't really like the taste of beer (tastes like cardboard to me)

when i'm at home, i drink occasionally to make myself happier (i don't drink beer, but instead smirnoff ice).
i don't like dealing with headaches the next morning, so this is a good reason i don't drink too much.

I almost never drink when I'm down or depressed, it'll just get worse then.

And I rarely drink myself tipsy, and even fewer times getting really drunk, but many times I'll grab a beer or a glass of wine for dinner, or just to drink alone, simply because it tastes good.
When I'm with friends, I usually bring along a 6-pack (3l total) of beer (4.7%), if I drink it over 5-6 hours I'm the good kind of tipsy the entire evening, and I don't get a headache the next morning :)

It's few and far between that I'm really drunk, and that's a good thing.
I have a far better time when I'm not drunk.

I drink very rarely. I've a low tolerance to alcohol, and having an altered state of consciousness is not a pleasant experience as far as I'm concerned.

I tend not to drink as a self disciplinary thing, I can drink if I want to, or if the occasion calls for it, but on a day to day basis I do not drink at all. Benefits include more moneys in my bank and a clear head to get through all the work that I need to do.

If I ever do drink I tend not to drink too much, enough just to relax and get a bit talkative, and to be a little less shy about being silly around others. Being my size however a few drinks have no real strong effect on me, which is good I suppose, expensive if I choose to get blotto.

I drink but rarely to the point I get drunk. If it happens it's kind of an accident.

My first reason for drinking is gastronomy; fine food gets even better with the right wine. ;)

Second reason is for the fun and relaxation. Still, I don't drink regularly.

My weakness will never be alcohol, it's tobacco that'll get me... :(

I dont .
mainly because of my religion (it was mentioned that the bad things that come out of drinking are more than the good )
so its not worth it , i.e. alcohol is bad mmmkay
and as i can see most people here share the same opinion , no one would sacrifice his brain well being just for a taste that last for 2 seconds only .

also there is this video on you tube i saw before (cant post it as its blocked at work ' just search youtube for drunk & funny ) I definitely don't want to end up like them drunk people

I don't drink.

I don't think there is such a thing as a casual drinker. I see it all as alcoholism and addiction but that's not why I avoid drinking.

I find most alcohol to be revolting but that's not why I don't drink.

I don't need a buzz. I am able to get by without one. I can get a better high from other non-drug related activities but that's not why I don't drink.

I have enough problems in life without adding alcoholism to them but that's not why I don't drink.

I have a family history of alcoholism and alcoholism related deaths but that's not why I don't drink.

I believe the loss of my inhibitions induced by alcohol would end very badly because when I honestly examine myself I'm probably homicidal and a rapist but that's not why I don't drink.

When I was a young child I was worried about the loss of brain cells due to alcohol since my identity was built purely on intelligence but that's not why I don't drink.

I was never one to party but that's not why I don't drink.

My parents as a child emphasized the potential dangers of alcohol because of their childhood experiences with alcoholic family members but that's not why I don't drink.

I'm just not a drinker.

And all the reasons you listed are exactly why you don't drink.
All of the possible reasons I listed don't actually affect my decision not to drink since I care about none of them. I don't have the emotional or rational investment in these potential reasons in order to direct or impact my decision making. They all sound like good reasons on paper but without any commitment to them they are purely academic, theoretical, and abstract.

The main reason why I don't drink is cuz soft drinks or carbonated drinks taste so much better than most forms of alcohol.
Seriously give me a choice between a beer and some Fanta or Coke and I'd pick the Coke or Fanta any day of the week.
That and same as Boltz I don't think an altered state of consciousness is the least bit fun.
And I get enough skull-shattering headaches without having to add hang-overs to the mix.

Plus I have no clue where my alcoholic tollerance actually is, going by genetics it should be really really low cuz all the people on my mom's side are or were alcoholics. Heck my grandfather on my mom's side used to drink wine like it was juice but I am a big guy so it's going to take a bit before alcohol can get to me so on that point my tollerance should be higher. I have no desire to find out what my actual tollerance is though.

It's however not that I don't drink at all, I sometimes have a beer or a glass of wine to go along with dinner providing I'm not the only one drinking.

It's however not that I don't drink at all, I sometimes have a beer or a glass of wine to along with dinner providing I'm not the only one drinking.
When I had my ex over for dinner one night, I opened up a bottle of wine which was supposedly very good to drink with the steak we had.
Problem was, she wouldn't have any. Reason? She was going to work the next morning (in ~12 hours).
I started wondering why, and asked her about it.
She has some family members that can't stop drinking once they start, and she's worried she might adapt that same bad habit.
She isn't the smallest woman either, so I tried telling her that 1 glass of wine will not get her drunk, or at the very best a bit tipsy. Besides, I only had 1 bottle.
But, she didn't want any. Wasn't a big deal, I had some coke in the fridge :)
Yet I still don't fully understand it.

I do find myself fully capable of stopping drinking if I really want to.
I don't get why other people can't.

Well if your tollerance is really low and connected to alcoholic genetics you will first probably like the stuff more than someone without those handicaps plus you will be drunk before you know it and thus open to way more booze.

It's a bit like someone who managed to kick a bad habit worrying about starting it up again, only in this case the habit has been in the family for years.

It's not that, a weakness to alcohol can be bred and passed on. It's one of the bad traits the can genetically be passed on from parents to kids, same as for instance excessive sweating or insulin resistance or some disease.
It's not just a matter of I'm worried I'll become an alcoholic like my grandfather just cuz he was one.

"I like beer! It makes me jolly good fellow!" - Tom T. Hall

I drink a lot, some might even say too much...
Nothing beats a ice cold Coors Light after a day of doing sports or just out in the sun.
Nothing beats a few microbrewed beers on tap at my favorite bar (Le Saint-Bock_PRODUITS) with friends after a long days work.
Nothing beats Southern Comfort on the rocks when you just want to drink alone at home and forget life's problems thrown your way.
Nothing beats drinking one too many and forgetting how the f*** you got home but at least you know you had one hell of a good time.

I can go on... I love the thing too damm much. There aint nothing going to get me to stop drinking.

Like some said I am a social drinker, I don't like to get wasted but I prefer a beer than a coke on a hot day.

It's amazing how people can change with some drinks, my wife's uncle is a real gentleman, very respectful but when he drinks he will mention your mother.

I don't know how people can't control themselves, I've never been drunk that I've done something regretful or have acted unrespectable.

The other day we went to the river and I drank 5 cans of beer by myself, I think that was the most I've drunk in a row, anyways my wife took the car although I felt I could drive ok.
