Ps2.0, 3.0 means the pixel shader used from the graphics card.

I think your card only supports up to pixel shader 2.0.

The nvidia geforce 6 series and the Ati X1000 series and up support pixel shader 3.0.

On my card when I forced PS2.0a I saw no difference in speed compared to 3.0

The reason as you said is because cards with PS2.0a are older (and in most cases in older rigs).

If your cpu is what is slowing you down then whatever pixel shader you use should not make a difference. I come to this conclusion baised on the fact that the pixel shader is for your gfx card. If changing from ps2 to ps3 or vice versa makes any change to your fps then it is a gfx limited system.

that means that geting ps 3.0 is better? cause mi old gfx dont get and have limits, and ps 2.0, and a new one could have ps 3.0 and not much limits

Thats not always the case, Generally last generations High End cards are better then this generations Low End cards(yet to see otherwise), and they are newer.

Also just by having a card with PS v3.0 it doesn't mean you wont be bottlenecked by your GPU.

Older cards sometimes run faster using ps2.0 for a couple reasons:

- ps3 was probably still 'new' when the card was released, so it had not been optimized as well as ps2 at that time.

- ps3 implements some new operations. Programs are often written to use what is available, so if only ps2 is available then the program won't use any of these fancy operations, but if ps3 is available they will. Using these extra functions may cause a slow down that is more noticeable on slower cards.

PS3.0 has the edition of allowing branch shaders and shorter code paths to get the same amount of effects, so in the end it means tht PS3.0 in most cases gives you better performance then PS2.0

PS3.0 also gives you access to PS2.0a shader levels as the Geforce FX is just straight PS2.0, it doesn't have access to features such as full speed white wash on shores.... (black and white 2 as example)
