It seems I can no longer use the older versions of MSN messenger on my PC. Whenever I try to sign in using version 7.5, it says i MUST install the new version to continue. I was wondering if there was a way to use the old version anyway, because Windows Live Messenger is rather unstable on my PC.

Yes you can :),
However I don't recommended that for security reason

Okay Here what you should do
1) Download Resource Hacker Resource Hacker
2) Open this file *:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe with Resource Hacker .. Go to "Version Info" and edit everything to "8,1,178,0" or "8.1.0178.00"
3) Do the same for "*:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msgslang.dll"

That should works :)

Never mind conflictuous featuresets then. It'll be funny when Yahoo people try adding/contacting you, and it fails (valid for other Live-only features too).
So stability and security compromised, is that really worth remaining in 7.5 , given you could just use the MSN Plus addon, for starters?

Does windows messenger still work. No not windows LIVE messenger, the plain old windows messenger the precursor to msn messenger which is the precursor to windows live messenger.

#6 ·
Yes it works, I use it when I am on XP.
Good good. I find that I am constantly trying to reduce windows live messenger so that it looks like windows messenger with a few more features.

Heh, if your deal with messenger is only for chat, Windows Messenger is still handy.
Yes I totally agree. Wait what else would you use it for ... besides maybe video-chat.

Well, I think we already have specific video-chat programs, and voice-chat programs like Skype, for example. I use Windows Messenger on XP because it doesn't consumes lots of memory, and I try to save every MB of RAM I can while on XP, since I play badass games on it. I used to use MirandaIM instead of Windows Messenger but it's not as good as WM. Always had problems with non-delivered messages and stuff.

The ONLY thing that *****es me about WM is the file transfer. It seems insanely slow comparing to MSN and WLM and I had issues of not being able to receive/send archives because something related to firewall and security stuff. If I could get rid of that, it'd be perfect.

There may be some sort of patch for that. It seems internal to msn and I believe that both sides may need to be patched to send at full speed.

Hmm, MSN Live 'seems' to be working great now but if it does ever go on a crashing spree, ill take your advice, thanks.

Bah this sucks I had rather just continued using 7.5.

#14 ·
Same here...

I found out tonight, after another fresh Windows installation I couldn't use 7.5 anymore, which I already didn't like for crap such as Winks. Ah well, I'll get used to it, over a year I'll be *****ing about how the new version sucks and I prefer to stay with the one that has been forced upon me on this very day.

I like offline messages very much, so I stick with live.

If you want to crash someone on live you can have some fun though. Just write a program to send them a couple of 1000 offline messages and next time their PC starts up... and MSN tries to start... TADA freeeeeze.

Acctually there is no way to start MSN live again, unless you email support and tell them to delete all your offline messages.... after they are done deleting you can do it all over again :D

How about having a programmer put a max limit on offlines messages such as on ICQ?? oops didn't think of that M$ ?? :p

Haha, didnt know the only way to stop that was to contact email support!

Downloaded WLM Lite v8.1.0178.00 now. Hope it's good. Since it's meant for a chat program I don't need all kinds of features, as long as it supports chatting and file transfer that's all I need. lol

Yup this seems like a good version.

EDIT: I still like 7.5 a bit better though. MS can **** themselves for trying to take away user's freedom of chosing. :p

I mean it's so clear, let's take this Vista + DX10 only example. They knew many people would flame them for doing so but what does it matter when people will use it anyways as there's no choise. Typical M$ monopoly philosophy. I must say M$ is an expert at making money at the expense of making the users upset. How long will this hold until enough is just enough? I would take that as a warning. MS could easily get better reputation today just doing a few simple unexpected turns and it might even benefit them in the long run altho they might loose a few bucks here and there today. M$ has lived so long on the expense of their monopoly now, if it wasn't for that they would never have gotten cloooose to this far but why not let go a bit of their "let's take advantage of this monopoly to make more money but upset people strategy"? They sure have the money to "try the wings" on this one so to speak and see what the outcome is. Happy users means more profit than forcing angry users to buy crap. lol I hope you see the reasoning and I apologize for my sarcasm.

Ironically, even those that DO know of alternatives refuse to use them. And I'm looking at everyone here at these forums, and a mirror. There's definitely alternatives, there's Trillian and other IM services, and there's also other operating systems. The only problem is, we're not used to them, and other OS' don't play games.

As a matter of fact Mercury Messenger does includes offline messaging, including your currently playing music from a variety of players, drawings, winks, animated gif's and quite an asset of things the original messenger doesn't come with (like detecting fake/faked friends, detecting what the client another user is using, multi-account's modes and the sort). And the main things that makes me puke everytime I'm forced to use messenger on someone else's comp: no advertisements.

but yeah, I'm not pushing it into anyone. You are all free to keep using Live Messenger :)

ok yeah, I know and I'll be the first to accept it's not like MM is the universal panacea that will come to solve all your problems, but still it's a nice alternative :)

I'll give it a try Proto, downloading right now. The only thing I don't really like the sound of is that it's been written in Java.

I know this thread is more than 2-Month-Old, but just to tell people it still works!
