If it's not ok to talk about "pirating" games here, where do you get your roms from?

NOTE: I AM NOT ASKING FOR LINKS TO ILLEGAL MATERIAL

I'm browsed these forums a couple of times, and whenever someone has used the word "downloaded" everyone immediately shuts him down. Is there a different way to get the games, or is it a "don't ask, don't tell" policy in this forum?

What you'd like to know ??

You have to open the cartridge, then you get the chip... And... Insert it on PCI Express slot. :)

Like the army, basically, yes.

If you blatantly "boast" about the games you own, use and download are roms, then yes, you will get shut down quite fast.

And if you don't have access to the original games (on discs), you might have problems troubleshooting.
I had trouble with a certain area of FFIX freezing on me every single time on the same spot when using images, and when I used the original disc I found out it was a bad rip.

Also, iirc many game companies regard emulation as piracy.
When the website and its admins express clearly that they do not want or support any kind of links, usage or support of illegally acquired images/roms, they don't get in trouble with the worst scum of the universe, lawyers.

Wtf !? :D

I love my roms. Its only that the roms cannot be written, so they linger in my ram 24/7.

So they are practically useless :)

I advocate proper .rom extraction from genuine cartridges and CD's. Work hard for your bits.

If you have your own cartriges, discs, HDD images, BIOSes, as well as the tools to dump 'em, you're in the clear as you are protected by special reverse engineering laws.

Roms? I get mine at the grocery story. They're near the flashcarts and japanese food.
Rom? Rum? :p

Still, you might say "downloading" is necessary, if you count "downloading" as in downloading from your original cartridge using special tools. :p

Be careful not to mix your rum with your roms. Emulators can't run on ethanol

You can also get your roms directly from the producer: cage-free farm fresh roms.

That's why nobody here talks about downloading. We all get them from legitimate channels.

Buy from the Wii's Virtual Console, extract the rom file so that it can run in emus, and you're fully legal. At up to 10 $ a pop, hardly a scam. Thats for if you dont have actual cartridges to dump from, or the hardware necessary to do it.
Nintendo Wii Virtual Console games just ROMS and HTML files? - 1Emulation.Com

Trading games and dumping those also works inexpensively, akin to ripping DVD rentals.

i think ram and rom are similar only rom is readonly it cannot be copied

There is only one way to get illegal ROMS and that is illegally downloading them.
Another way is to get the cartridge CD etc, and dump them using the appropriate tools. not clued up on that side though, as...I...*cough*. anyway, downloading ROMS = bad, buying ROMS = good :)

But, wait.

If you are gonna legally get the roms by extracting them from their original media, wouldn't you be 'downloading' them ? And wouldn't it be the same if you bought the right to 'download' a copy of the game to your HDD ?

The logic behind rom downloading is stunning me with its stupidity.

The logic behind buying abandonware .rom is stunning me with it's stupidity.

There aren't tons of abandonware 'roms' though...

Anyway, if one is 'concerned' about roms and legality, why not buying copiers/doctors and stfu ?

Making your own roms with your own games and hardware at home is legal as long as you don't share'em.

That's stupid yeah, but stupid question -> stupid answer.

ok ill rephrase, legally downloading legal ROMS = good, illegally downloading legal illegal ROMS = bad. Hope this clears it up :p
