As I'm getting older and not as good as I used to be in playing games I'm trying out genres of games I haven't played in the past. I'm having a difficult time with many of these genres. I suck at a lot of games such as Assassin's Creed, Fear 2, etc, and I'm struggling to try and learn how to play them.

Even though I've been playing games for nearly 30 years, a lot of these games are different than what I'm used to. Also with age I'm not as good of a learner, and I struggle with stuff that should be easy.

I don't want to give up, and I want to try to at least finish some of these games. I'd really appreciate advice on how many of you started in gaming and how you approached games of different genres for the first time.

Obviously I can read gamefaq's, etc, but there's more to playing games than moving a character and pressing buttons.

Personally I am use to playing RPG games mainly and since that has basically spun off so many sub genres and games that include a lot of rpg elements in them it works for me. For stepping out of my general genre I have played Kart racers mainly dont like other sport genres at all. I stay away from FPS games as well. As for games like Assassins Creed I tend to stay away from those games as well Just not my type of game. I do the best I can went enter fields I dont know like RTS games for instance I try to find those that have a lot of rpg elements tho like some of the older ones like Dungeon Keeper or Spellforce that have familiar elements to them so I feel somewhat comfortable and I also play strategy rpgs like Final Fantasy Tatics or Fire Eblem which helps as well.

Sometimes the games are easier than you think though...
I tend to get controls wrong, performing an action too fast or pressing additional buttons I don't have to.
A good example was Batman AA. I'd often want to try to do too much, whereas that game has such dumbed down controls it isn't even funny.

I take gaming performance enhancing drugs: Cheetos and Mountain Dew, while testing for these banned substances in MLG tournaments isn't an official thing yet, you can always tell who's been hawking those performance enhancers.

I dunno man, I just brute force things these days if I can't be bothered to figure out the intricacies of the game, maybe read the manual for a bit, drop the difficulty.

'Easy mode' if your senses, reflexes and hand-eye coordination are getting duller.
Also, rather than new genres, I find discovering old titles more compelling.
Currently, my approach for new genres is to set difficulty to "Easy". When I started playing Metal Gear Solid first time with "Medium", I regretted that choice later.

For racing simulators, I have a bit different approach: realism to the hardest, but opponent skill level to easy or easiest.

Try browsing Top 10 lists on GameFAQs. I never would have played Penumbra without reading about it there. Which lead me to the Humble Bundles. Which lead me to World of Goo and Braid. Which lead me to Limbo. Which lead me to The Path.

Why are you trying to force yourself to play certain games?

And ALL games require trial and error if you don't just naturally take to them from the get-go. Playing a very different game just means more of that than simply playing another FPS.
