Hey im curious what version has the best visual quality. I found acouple threads but there from 2003, and what not, so there not recent enough to make an opinion. Im playing ff7 on epsxe with petes ogl2 and it looks good, but im wondering if the pc version has higher quality textures. Also, the pc version uses direct3d and has perspective correction. but what im really concerned about is what version has the best graphics quality, pc or maxed out epsxe?

i no the pc has inferior sound quality but can be fixed with an unoffical patch. what i wanna no is in term of graphics quality, which would be better, pc with direct3d or epsxe

ePSXe can look very similar, if not slightly better than the PC version, but lacks z-buffering (hence the shaky character animations). As far as using the PC version on newer versions of Windows, good luck. There might be ways of getting to run on Windows 7, but I haven't seen any hacking guides yet; using ePSXe to play FFVII is less of hassle in my opinion.

Thanks i always wondered why playstation games always shook like that ahahah. i no theres all these patches and mods for the pc version, but i want to keep it vanilla and original. i saw these hi def models for the pc version someone made and i thot they looked like ass. tho the patch to run it above 640x480 sounds good. i jus want the original models and graphics to look as best as possible and am wondering what version of ff7 has higher resolution textures. i played the pc version of metal gear solid and it looked far better then the psx version, but someone commented that if i ran mgs thru epsxe it would look even better. so im wondering if this is the same for ff7 on pc? or should i jus stick with epsxe ff7 with petes ogl2.

i also saw that the pc version mite have actual hands for the models. but am not sure if this is another custom mod.

i used Aali’s Custom Graphics Driver on the pc version. in the battle sequence u can c the difference that the textures are very blocky. there was a option in the opengl.cfg for texture filtering and will post a pic soon with it enabled to c if it smoothes out the texture like it does on epsxe.

comparing the pc battle scene screens, id say the textures are exactly the same except for the fence near the barrels in the background are blocky compared to the smooth epsxe version. can someone please give some answeres cuz besides the shaking textures and charactors (hence z buffering which i think give ps1 games there charm) they are the same wen run thru epsxe. someone out there must no which one has better visuals.

after seeing how epsxe smoothes out sprites (fence in battle pic near barrels) the epsxe version is far better as im sure theres alot of sprites in ff7. maybe if aalis driver had an option to smooth sprites it would be better but along side with having to mod the **** out of the pc version jus to get it working and to get the same soundtrack as the orignal. im sticking with the epsxe version. of course the regular psx version is not even comparable to the pc version. but wen u run it thru a emulator with all the enhancments (texture filtering, sprites smooth) it even surpasses the pc version. i hope this helps ppl to choose the right version. always remember to max out ur epsxe settings and use texture filter and sprite smooth to get the best visuals for this awesome game. its one of the best rpgs out there so it deserves this kind of attention to detail.

and clouds eyes look far better on the epsxe version :p no ****

You can find shaders for Pete's OpenGL2 2.9 here. I use the "Natural" shader for all 3D games. It gives nice colors and anti-aliasing.

you can use shaders on the pc version too with Aali's opengl graphics driver :p

*edit took some screens of my modded ff7 pc
That still doesn't answer the question of "how the bloody heck does it even RUN on a newer-than-Windows 98-Operating System?" Seriously, I need to know how to do this...

All the patches I've seen or used on XP either crashed the game at the Temple of the Ancients, froze after the Chocobo race, or plain and simply weren't real patches at all. The only patch that worked for me was the PSF Music hack.

If anyone can tell me what patches to use to make this game 100% beatable, I will be very happy.

ff7pc never had problems running on anything past windows 98 and that XP patch is a fake. all u ever needed was the 1.02 update which was just ff7.exe and ff7config.exe. and apply the chocobo patch to fix the chocobo races

Install FF7
get 1.02 update
get chocobo patch and apply it to ff7.exe
usually using software or d3d rednerers would crash ff7, but using Aali's custom graphics driver from qhimm's forum fixes all those crashes.
put all files from Aali's custom graphics driver in your ff7pc folder and run ff7config.exe and go to graphics, it will set everything up and u just edit the cfg file it makes
ff7 music works fine with thsi driver too u just need to remove the # in front of the ff7 music entry in the cfg file

even before this custom driver came around I never had a crash in ff7pc, not in win2k,xp,win7 x86/x64

Interesting...never thought it'd work in Windows 7. And is that the Reunion Patch for the 3D models?

randomizer, incase u didnt notice my windows 7 taskbar in my screen shots, i am using windows 7. and it runs fine. like yeloazndevil said jus follow his steps. i simply jus installed the 1.02 patch and then aalis custom opengl driver. now is it worth it? i dont think so. unless u want to have those custom models but i dont like the way they look. petes ogl2 and aalis custom opengl really are the same except petes can smooth out the sprites and make it prettier. hence why im sticking with the epsxe version. BETTAR GRAFIX!11!11

As much as I love to play the original PSX version of FF7. I'd go with PC. Where, with the emu, you can enhance the graphics a bit, but maintain those 'blocky' characters, with the PC version, there are many different add-ons or mods that can be added to make it a wholly changed game, graphically. To the point where it seems like it's for a completely different system then PSX.
