First, I'm aware of the old posts about this problem, but neither of those provided a solution to the problem. And yes, the error doesn't make your life unbearable, but it would be nice to fix this as others have had this same error.
So ePSXe v1.7 on Windows 7 Professional 32bit crashes on exit and only with image files. All games do this.
If I mount an image and load the "CD" (virtual CD-drive), play, exit (esc --> File --> Exit) it doesn't crash. Neither does it crash if I only start the program and then exit.
ePSXe is run with Administator privileges (+ my user is an admin) and the whole ePSXe folder is owned by me + isn't read-only. I've tried with DEP on and DEP off, same result.
There was talk about empty memory card boxes causing this. I removed the old memory cards and created new ones. Then I played a bit and saved the game on both cards. Again a crash on exit.
ePSXe's own log doesn't give any info about this error. Log continues to "Closing spu..." and then the whole thing goes to Bit Heaven.

Well that's all I can think up. Hopefully someone can help.
