Same Question

Dont want to make a new topic as i'm sure this is asked way to much so i'll ask the same question. I cant really play this now because i have an old pentium IV and get 12 FPS max even making all the setting changes.. so i'm thinking of buying a new PC for multiple reasons.. this being one of them..

can this setup run it very smoothly with no hiccups?

Intel® Core™ i7-920 processor(8MB L3 Cache, 2.66GHz)
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 4 DIMMs
nVidia GeForce GTS 240 1024MB

buy a ps2 instead, it will be cheaper

yeah. i was thinking of that too. however. will the config i posted run the emulator well though? I'm still geting the PC for many other reasons.
2.6 GHz is not good for pcsx2 even if its i7 or 8 or 9
pcsx2 uses only two cores of the cpu so any cpu having two cores running at a speed of 3GHz and above will do the job. your i7 is going to fail miserably at pcsx2. :dead:
For everything else it will destroy the competition.

Umm A 2.6GHz i7 is still faster than 3.0GHz Phenom II which I have and it runs most ps2 games fine...

I think you should consider buying better GPU especially if you intend to play with high res, the CPU will do fine though...

Well duh, do you only play Tekken 5 on pcsx2? Any other games can run just fine with that setup and he can always overclock his CPU to the moon as it is one of the most overclockable and ideal CPU to play pcsx2 with now.

Try running Dragon Quest 8 with that GPU. I have 3850 which is slightly more powerful than 8600GT and I can't even go with my native res (1360x768) in some games.

If it can't run well with overclocked i7 then it's pcsx2 limitation. And is the person in question intend to run that games? I think it's still worth buying that PC to play other games in full HD (not to mention other emu like Dolphin, it's worth it).

Btw, good thing I don't play fighting games with pcsx2. >.<

funny you say that. I actually planned on playing my copies of Dragon Quest 8 and Dark Cloud 2 on it.

try mortal kombat armageddon
king of fighters
virtua fighter 4
soul calibur 3
what if i upgrade to:

Intel® Core™ i7-960 processor(8MB L3 Cache, 3.2GHz)

Not worth the money at all, you'd better spend it with cooling and do a slight overclock to reach that clock or more.

DQ8 seems to require a rather high GPU to power, an odd case in Pcsx2. I haven't tested DC2 though.

That i7 will do the job on most PS2 games as long as you have a good GPU, i can run almost everything at full speed (with speedhacks obviously) with high internal resolution with this E8200 2.6GHz and Nvidia GTS 250 and i can play Gamecube and some Wii games (like Mario Kart Wii) just fine, if i overclock this CPU to 3GHz+ i won't have any problems with high demanding games.

From all the PS2 games i tested (and i tested like 50 already) the only games so far that was not full speed (but still playable) was:

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. (even with speedhacks)

Everything else was full speed (or almost full speed) including God of War I & II (with speed hacks) and Dragon Quest 8. Metal Gear Solid 2 was not full speed but still very playable (with speedhacks).

That i7 will do the job, and you can overclock it too. So yeah, i say go for the i7 and the GPU.

That's not true. My i7 at stock speed (2.66 GHz) was able to run everything fine. Of course the Graphic Card matters too for this part. But saying PCSX2 is going to fail miserably with an i7 CPU at stock speeds is definitely not true.

what if i upgrade to:

Intel® Core™ i7-960 processor(8MB L3 Cache, 3.2GHz)
Stick with the i7-920 and spend the remaining money on a graphic card or anything else you still need.

It's been shown through tests and through what the developers said that in pcsx2 the i7 is clock for clock faster than the Core 2 duo in PCSX2. Another good thing is that the i7 automatically overclocks to 2.8GHz because of it's built in turbo boost. An i7 at stock is probably faster than a 3GHz Core 2 duo.

But, a better choice in cpu for PCSX2 is the i5 661

Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-661 Clarkdale 3.33GHz 4MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 87W Dual-Core Desktop Processor - Processors - Desktops

It already has a high clock rate, it automatically overclocks to 3.4GHz and in certain situations it can automatically clock up to 3.6GHz And when you manually do the overclocking it overclocks like a beast. Plus it's $100 less than a i7 920.
