As promised, my configs and screens from Final Fantasy 9.

If you're curious about my PC (and too lazy to check my profile) then here you go

3.0ghz Pentium 4 w/ HTT (Socket 478)
1gb D/C 400mhz RAM
BFG 6800 GT (overclocked to above an Ultra)

And if anyone is curious, the ROM is homemade using ISO Producer using the CD plugin config below.

so every single time you use blizzard you get a freeze? does this happen in every emulator you try? are you loading off save states (if so, don't). try playing off a CD if you're using ISO. well, im basically just repeating myself, you can find all those basic troubleshooting steps (and more) in this thread.

the only reason it would pertain to the particular thread you're in at the moment is if you're having problems with my config making the problems. if you fiddle with the settings (like using those that others have posted), does that help at all?

Its not so much a freeze as a stutter, like a computer going through a tough graphics scene. But I would think I could handle a playstation game, afterall I can play most new computer games with good settings. So I was wondering what option might pertain specificaly to the effects spells have graphicaly so that I coule mess with it.

you're 100% fine, that GPU is better than the 5600 i had when i wrote these settings. what drivers are you using?

Lol. I get a slight framerate hit with big spells as well. Nothing too big with my rig though. If it persists just drop from Ultra-High to Very High on the Internal Y Resolution. That should drop the load on your PC.

My best config for ff9

Hello everyone.
The best config i've found for Final Fantasy 9 is with Pete's OpenGL Driver 1.76 .
I don't use very often OGL2, because it doesn't support the FSAA and others settings you can adjust in the properties of your graphic card. I have far better results with the settings on "Optimal quality" in my graphic card properties, and with Direct3d 1.76 or OpenGL 1.76 , than trying to adjust with OGL2 plugin.
Here are the best settings i've found :

Plugin: Pete's OpenGL Driver 1.1.76
Author: Pete Bernert
Card vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
GFX card: RADEON 9800 Pro x86/MMX/3DNow!/SSE

Resolution/Color:
- 1024x768 Fullscreen - NO desktop changing [32 Bit]
- Keep psx aspect ratio: off

Textures:
- R8G8B8A8
- Filtering: 2
- Hi-Res textures: 0
- VRam size: 0 MBytes

Framerate:
- FPS limitation: on
- Frame skipping: off
- FPS limit: Auto

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 3
- Framebuffer texture: 3
- Framebuffer access: 3
- Alpha multipass: on
- Mask bit: on
- Advanced blending: on

Misc:
- Scanlines: off
- Line mode: off
- Unfiltered FB: off
- 15 bit FB: off
- Dithering: off
- Screen smoothing: on
- Screen cushion: off
- Game fixes: on [00011200]

And here are some pictures :

That is with 4x anti-alisasing, 16x anisotropic filtering, high quality mipmap detail level. (i don't know if anisotropic filtering and mipmap have any consequence, but these are the settings i use to play all my games, so i don't want to switch everytime i play ff9). If i unlock the fps limit (60 fps), ff9 runs at 290-300 fps. I have an athlon xp 2400+, and 512 Mo of DDR Ram.
Have you any suggestions ? special fixes, or minor adjustements...

ok that's great, im glad you made that, but this is an OGL2 thread ;)

edit: updated the first post with a whole lot of fixes. check the changelog for details.

i know that is an OGL2 thread, but i didn't know if i would have been transfered to this thread if i posted a new thread for my config. I was afraid of "there's a thread of this, moved/warned". Do you advise me to post it to a new thread ?

well, it used to be pointless for people to make OGL configs (for any game, but FFs specifically) because of Lord Kane's site. unfortunately, it's down (and has been for a while) so it's fine to make a thread about OGL and FF9. if you're going to do it, put it in plugin questions & troubleshooting, and make sure it has a clear title.

mmm, would anyone mind telling me if this configs you are talking about would work fine with a 64mb graphic card??.cause ive tried and it said something about the frame buffer object extension missing.what the hell is that??

yeah, you cant do it. basically, it cant render the way it needs to render for you (which is the frame buffer object rendering thingy). use OGL1.76 in your case.

we are a pal country, but i have the game in US-NTSC...Anyway,i finally got it to work by chaanging a few config settings. My guess is the problem was a graphics problem.Snodawg´s config was meant for a much more advanced platform than the one i have.
