Here's my own Top 10 (shameless website plug  )

1. Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX)
3. Chrono Cross (PSX)
4. Secret of Mana (SNES)
5. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
6. Guilty Gear X (PC/DC/PS2)
7. Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
8. Plok (SNES)
9. Silent Hill 2 (PC/PS2/XBox)
10. Street Fighter eX Plus Alpha (PSX)

I wonder why no one has mentioned Star Ocean 3, yet :nono: In my opinion it's one of the best works Sakuraba ever made! It had so many unique songs which sometimes made me forget that they are only sequenced music.

Closely followed by:

Vagrant Story (!!!) - no one has mentioned Hitoshi Sakimoto, yet...
Xenosaga ep.1 (Omega  )
Final Fantasy VI (especially Dancing Mad  )
Donkey Kong Country 2 (the Mines theme is my all-time favourite)
Valkyrie Profile (my favourite: Eternal Engine of Linguistic Massacre)
Star Ocean

Timesplitters series. mainly ts2. ts3 has some nice action tunes, and some crazy ones, but timesplitters 2 siberia is amazing. also Castlevania:SOTN, Skies of Arcadia, the end credit music gets me every time, and the title theme is very soothing. and mega man 3. while i think mega man 2 has better music, 3's music just sticks in my head, 'specially magnet man.

Hard.

My top ten :
1) Final Fantasy VI
2) Chrono Cross
3) Chrono Trigger
4) Final Fantasy IX
5) Final Fantasy VII
6) King of fighters 98 (Since it contains most of the best tracks from first KOFs)
7) Real Bout Fatal fury special
8) Dracula X - Rondo of Blood (That rare one on Turbo CD)
9) Last Blade 2
10) Garou : Mark of the wolves

1. Nubuo Umeatsu
2. Whoever did Neverwinter Nights music (He's also done music from other games which I like)
3. Wild Arms 1 and 2
4. Yasonuri Mitsuda
5. Deus Ex 1
6. Lunar 1 and 2 for the SCD
7. Tales of Phantasia for the SNES and PSX
8. Golden Sun

's all I can think of atm. Might add more later

Nobuo Uematsu

Nobuo's work is like a infectious disease: it catches on really quick.
the FF series says it all for him, most inspring to me..

heh i once sat down and tabbed out the entire song that plays in Treno (from ff9).. that ragtime piano song made me remember why i took up that instrument

My top 10:

1. Valkyrie Profile (I mean there's no game with better soundtrack!!!)
2. Valkyrie Profile (Sorry, the ST is so great I had to do this!)
3. Xenogears (I cry everytime I hear the music box song!)
4. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (Well, IMHO the remake has better musics)
5. Vay (A Sega CD RPG with FANTASTIC songs!!!)
6. Final Fantasy 9 (Another great one)
7. Garow: Mark of the Wolves (most SNK games have great songs, this 1 is the best!)
8. Terranigma (yeah, that unknown Snes game! I love the musics here!)
9. Final Fantasy 6 (Man, that opera song is... GREAT!)
10. Final Fantasy 8 (Some songs are very memorable here!!)

DAMN! how about an american composer?
one thatll be a blast from our past:

Robert Prince

all the classic oldies we all remember:
Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny
Duke Nukem 2
Duke Nukem 3D
DOOM
Realms of Chaos
Cosmo
BioMenace
BLAKE STONE

and who could forget:
Commander Keen 4, 5, and 6?

sure his music may not have been as top-budget productions as the Final Fantasy music- but my god it was catchy as hell!

I have to agree with him! Even nowdays I still have all the Commander Keen 5 songs stuck in my head, specially the map screen one!!

edit: Oh, and we can't forget about Blake Stone, Bobby Prince also did the musics on this game, and he surelly did a great job!!

I'm glad people are mentioning FF9. That soundtrack gets no love since alot of people didn't like the game itself and considered it a black sheep. I think it's Uematsu's best PSX soundtrack (better than FF7 or 8). Similarly, I think Legend of Mana is another awesome awesome soundtrack that gets forgotten because no one like Legend of Mana from a gameplay perspective. Not only that, but both FF9 and LoM are absolutely HUGE soundtracks - also, both being a bit later in the PSX production cycle, the sample quality is alot than earlier PSX titles (for example, other than One Winged Angel, FF7 sounds pretty much like SNES quality).
