It always does take some time when you push one of the buttons, so you are right, it is slow, but ati is planning to release future drivers (beginning with 5.0 i think) only compatible with the new control panel.
And who knows, maybe they optimize it in the next release, so it's faster....

I will change my mind when ATI will release CCC running on Slow PCs or HTTPs. Until then my opinion is done.

For meminder, the goal of a good HTTP is to work silently (slow cpu without a fan), a good VGA card with TV out and a superb Sound card.

HTPC's :p
http= hyper text transfer protocol

There is an interesting thread on rage3D describing the ccc, and as of now, it's as buggy as it can get. And it's meant for R300 and higher, wich a 9200 is not, so it won't work for you Chrono. I'm going to wait until later revisions make it better.

ohh i see. thx I-Chan. i dont really mind...i harldy use the current CP
wouldyou happen to know if they plan on making it compatible with older Radeon cards?

Does it add Digital Color Vibrance slide bar like on NV cards?

I'll probably being trying this tomorrow or today. I'm busy with other programs right now so I cannot restart if I install it. It looks pretty good and from that review page (posted on page 1) that big memory usage doesn't cause a problem with games.

It's too big. You say it's also too slow, and it won't work with the old r9000 i have in my old pc, so I will just not download it xD

The .net framework is a general runtime, so you will only need to d/l it once, and it will be there for any apps you get :p but aniway, 20mb for justa control panel is excessive... a CP should be simple and useful.

I really prefer the progs that use the "KISS" method (Keep It Small and Simple)...

Well, I couldn't see anyways, accessing the Advanced CP in display properties
always causes BSOD... I had to switch to the oldschool CP :(

I fear that at this time DV is Nvidia feature only. Havent tested this new CP, but i heard that only NVidia support DV by hardware (i have NO idea if it requires HW support though. Maybe we should ask ATI about this?) currently... :(

Well, whenever I'll buy a new card I'll switch back to NV if they don't add it
(they have about 2-3 years to do so ^^)

Thats what i have also in mind. Already set my eyes on Gainward 5900XT Goldensample. Quite cheap, and can be overclocked to be faster than 5900Ultra  (which costs twice more. oO )

Get a 68xx based card. They blow the 5xxx series right out of the water, and a coniderable distance into the stratosphere

Oh, i certainly would, but price? 5900XT, even Golden Samples, costs about 210€ here. That is excellent price for a card about same speed with ATI 9800Pro, and when overclocked, it beats the crap out of it.

A 6800NU from Novatech is GB£218. The 5900U (the competitor to the 9800Pro) is GB£216. The XT, the castrated version is GB£131

...but AFAIK, all next-generation cards are PCI-E, no?

281£ = 321€. Around here PNY Verto 6800GT 256MB costs about 428€ and thats qutie a lot. Even though its cheaper there, shipping costs compromises the difference, and it wouldnt be worth of trouble...

Even though castrated, 5900XT can be overclocked to be faster than 5900Ultra which costs twice more. Normally 5900XT has only 128MB ram, but Gainward is releasing beefed up version of 5900XT with 256MB ram. I have no idea what it costs, since its not sold here yet.

*EDIT* Noticed that there is also normal 6800 with only 128MB ram only. Its tad cheaper, but i wonder how smaller ram affects perfomance, especially in Doom3...

I am not very impressed myself...

imho, this CCC is

a) bloated (eats a lotta memory)
b) buggy (.NET crashes at some occasions)
c) slow (slow to start, slow to navigate)
d) accessing network all the time (on startup, when switching between pages, even when starting a game profile)... and if you block it with a personal firewall, it will simply stop to work
e) not even user-friendly (still a lotta clicking and scrolling needed for simple tasks like enabling/disabling vsync)

and to think that ATi claimed that a team of 10 guys were working for over a year on it... oh my.

a simple freeware like aTuner (http://www.3dcenter.org/atuner/index_e.php) does the same job (including game profiles), for all ATi and NVidia cards, without the above mentioned flaws... funny.

Oh, Mr. Killjoy, the crashes you have got when accessing the CP are related to older versions of RadLinker/RadClocker... you have to uninstall or upgrade this tools.
