i'm setting up an old and crappy computer for a little kid down my street to use.
here's the spec.

windows xp pro
733MhZ processor
64 MB SDRAM
20 GB hard disk (seriously slow read and write speed)
it was brought about 4 years ago

i need an anti virus program that will not suck up all the system resources but can scan email and auto protect /update.

Light, Free, AVG.

Edit: agh, samor beat me to it :p

i dont think win xp with 64 mb of ram is a good idea, imo 98 is best in that case

I agree, it's a bad idea. I wouldn't even put Windows 2000 on that little of RAM. I'd say put Windows 98 on it at the very most.

yer but its only gonna do basic stuff so it doesn't need to be that good.
Still.. If you're gonna give it to someone to use, might as well make it usable.:p I've run XP Pro totally tweaked on a 64Mb machine and it wasn't that great.

Avast is a nono for a system with that low of memory....Avast will easily chew up about half of your avaliable memory

I dumped Avast and AVG for a free program called AntiVir....has regular updates and only takes up around 10MB of memory on my machine :) Combine that with Zonealarm Free (which only takes up 10MB too) and you have your whole system protected for only 20MB :)

I put AVG on this PC and it seems to run fine. I disabled the autoprotect options though so I don't know how much memory it uses for that. A stick of 128 MB (or even 256 if the motherboard lets you) would work wonders with that PC :).
