and now don't go be knocking on volition for the summoner series. I actually liked it. It was quite different and had a different flavor than most console Rpg's. Theyre also creators of the Red Faction series and the up and coming Punisher game.
I know it's a solid game, i've played both summoner in fact, but freespace is a great game, head of the class if you will, other games made by volition while solid doesn't have Freespace quality in it.

And I think we all agree that the space sim genre need a boost of excellent titles right now.

I never played the game that was made by Mr Smart tho, heard some dismal reviews for his game, so do you guys think that the news is great or bad?

It seems both the Wing Commander and Freespace communities (which are in some kind of a rediculous war iirc because people hold Freespace 2 responsible for killing the genre ) are in agreement about how bad it would be if Mr Smart will get/has gotten his hands on that license..

Ok the actual big thing is. Wingcommander Prophecy sold very poorly compared to Freespace 2. Many of the community blamed FS for killing WC series. Origin was closng down and Chris Robets was wanting to move on. FS was the escape goat.

The Space Sim genre has died out in recent years alot, due to the increase in mind-less FPS. Most people don't want to see a black drop with stars anymore. The genre had some hits and misses in the backgrounds in recent years. I'm gonna make up a post shortly and list some highly recommened games.

The comment about Volition, yes I do agree. FS was a much higher calibur game than other ones they have put out. Yet, Interplay had owned rights to series, Volition at the time only developed the game. It's ashame that Interplay never saw it fit to let them create FS3, like they had originally planned. Yet, Interplay was never one for being smart with ther titles.

you never heard of freespace 2 before!?!? Jeez, even when i didn't know a damn thing about those types of games, i knew what freespace 2 was.
It never came to our shelves here (very few decent titles do). EA pretty much dominates the game scene here because they have a local factory in Johannesburg. I would very much like to try out some of these titles mentioned above but getting hold of them is something else tho...
At least now that i know their names, I can start my search and ultimately play them. :)

And it still has decent graphics for todays game if you are concern about that permethium, at least way better than prophecy
Nice graphics is a bonus, but its not a major issue for me. As long as the gameplay is as enjoyable as WC. But if the graphics in freespace is even better than WCP (which i thought was cool for that time) it's going to be great!

BTW: (Klatch) Those screenshots you posted looks really cool! Do you also get to equip different kinds of missiles and take down huge motherships with torpedos? -Damn I want to play it-

And ain't that a friggin shame? I'm so sick of WW2 FPS clones - enough already!! I say.

Yes, you do. Very big motherships :) And they have cool laser beams for both defense and offense in addition to flak/plasma/missile (like the green one in the 2nd pic). Later in the game, it get's really cool with huge warfare's with countless of motherships (well, not countless, but still quite a lot).

i haven't seen anything other than our good buddy, god of all games, Dr. Derek Smart, bragging on some forum about how he can potentially get the Freespace liscense from Interplay. When people gave perfectly valid reasons as to why he shouldn't be allowed to have it, even after asking people's opinions on the issue, all he could do was just try to pass them off as trolls, and sick his dick sucking friends (who only praise him because they haven't played anything better than his games) on them. I think anybody with a little bit of intelligence would be extremely pissed off if Derek Smart got the liscense, especially after some of the things he said (saying how he doesn't give a s**t about what a couple of the biggest space sim communities on the net think).

This all doesn't mean that Volition can't get the liscense. From what Smart said, it seems as if interplay is just going to dump the liscense off to the highest bidder. Volition, while not big budget, definitely has more funds than Smart, and they can easily outbid him, if smart ever makes a solid attempt at the liscense. Volition should act fast anyways, and get it from interplay as soon as possible, since interplay is going under quick.
