I got a better idea....just replace the damn mobo and processor and forget about fixing this ^__^. I found some mobo/processor combos for under 100 bucks, so I'm gonna upgrade both. I can get a Athlon 2400+ for an extra 5 bucks if I buy online. Now a Athlon runs hotter, so I'll need a good heatsink/fan and some of that thermal gel for the processor. Anything else I would need to run my new processor smoothly?

You'll need:
  • DDR RAM (Athlons don't use SD-RAM)
  • Probably a larger PSU (~450W)
  • If you haven't already done so, it would be a good idea to get a 2nd hard drive and mirror it so you never lose data due to hard drive failure (XP Pro supports this with software mirroring, Home does not)

I'm pretty sure that Athlons can use plain SDRAM just fine (although DDR is obviously preferable). My dad's old Socket A motherboard (PCChips M812 I think) has both SDRAM and DDR slots (I didn't test it with SDRAM though).

Edit: grahf's post mentioned that there are ECS boards with both types of slots as well.

my old ECS k7s5a mobo ate batterys like they were nothing. if i unplugged my computer at all, i ended up getting that error and had to reconfigure my bios.

I think they do. My old mobo supported DDR and SDRAM and it supported the athlon XP processors.
