Me and my friends were having a conversation. And I made a comment about how something was lame. I referred to it as "Gay" Actually. Using a Slang that I have developed over time to refer things I dislike as Gay.

During that time My lesbian Friend got extremely upset that I said that, I got about a 30 minute lecture to using it. :???: I then felt pretty bad about it.

I have never been conscious about using the word gay negatively However, And I have always used it. The ironic Part being. I am Bisexual (Oh that might surprise a few of you ;p), and I have never EVER thought of it the way she did, Is Using such a word negatively really that detrimental to the Homosexual Community?

Is it like saying "Damn That is Freaken Black" For Example? I have never considered them the same. But She did.

Well, while some people might find the negative use of some words offensive, in my opinion its just the tip of the iceberg.... the epitome of a problem that wont be solved aby changing a few words in our vocabulary.

Its not a change in our vocabulary the most demanding problem, but a radical change of vision about our posture against minorities that have been historically rejected and considered as parias. Compared to these, some foul vocabulary becomes laughable

well your not really REJECTING minorities by calling something gay...more of like saying they are off the normal (which isn't necessarily bad)...if homosexuals take someone calling something gay as an offense, they should seriously have better things to worry about. No matter how hard you try, if your different in ANY way, someone is bound to offend you with something insignificant.

Nonono, i just said that this kind of language usage is the reflection of the underlying problem. Even if you dont really feel it, the deep hatred of the society in general is imprinted upon you, in various degrees, being one of the minor ones the use of such vocabulary

Aside from the term "homosexual" all the terms for homosexuals are insults, or have insulting connotations in and of themselves. I mean the word gay originally just meant happy. It was applied to homosexuals because of the stereotype of gays as debaucherous and just out having a merry old time - the kind of gay person that most people would call "flamingly gay". ***** is another word for homosexual - it means odd or abnormal - and it was originally meant to be very insulting towards homosexuals. For some reason, the gay community decided it liked the word and now its actually a fairly accepting non-insulting term (ex. ***** Eye for the Straight Guy).

Yeah, so "gay" was originally meant to insult homosexuals, yet it was accepted and finally adopted as simply meaning... gay. If the gay community uses a derrogation as a form of identification, do they have any right being mad at this use of the word "gay" too? Nope. If they care that much, they shouldn't call themselves gay, cause, at heart, that's an insult in and of itself.

Some words will always be forbidden... that's the way it is, gay is one of them. Some ppl do use it negatively (in fact, I might have done so a few times) so I can understand their anger... the fun part is, some ppl don't care who use the word, their best friend could do so and they will still want your head on a pike...

yeah... when you say the word "gay" here in our country, they either like being called like that while others are not... mostly take it negatively. Gay people are very vocal, sometimes they are nice people to hang around with ( and they have a tonload of girl friends :p) but I am irrititated by their presence, especially the ones that put on make up and other "girl" stuff if you know what I mean...

I'm sure they don't like your presence either...

Anyways, I don't really care that much if people use the word gay to refer to something bad because usually it has nothing to do with homosexuals. I'm more offended by the word qu-eer because it means abnormal.

It's just one those words... in my country the word gay is bad for gay ppl and straight ones... kinda like the N word on the US... I never understood how ppl grant a mere word so much power but... whatever...

It all started with south park.....Using words like "gay" and "jew" (for me anyways :p). Use of the word "gay" has been baned in my school. Now we use such words as "Jewish" or "Democratic". I have nothing against these people, so i dont see the problem. If they are hurt by it, yea i feel bad, but i dont mean anythign by it. Even though I can't say "gay" i prefer to say "That's not very straight" better andyway :p

Actually we don't need to give you an answer. The board appends an "edited by" statement at the bottom of an edited post. As is true in this case.

BTW Don't be such a smart alec in future by using cheep tricks to bypass the boards built in filter.

the word gay? Hm, not often but ... "schwuchtel" rather more ;P I tend to agree with Tak and Sissi. There are better ways to get some attention, which furthermore, let you look good in a less embarrassing way. Even most down dressed gay ppl dislike such outfits IIRC.
