Definiton of a Role-Playing Game:

A game in which players assume the roles of characters and act out fantastical adventures, the outcomes of which are partially determined by chance, as by the roll of dice.

EDIT: Who needs balls anyways? :p j/k. BTW, Lord Kane, your new avatar is worse then the last one, and i hated the last one

Re: What is your favorite RPG

I don't like Nintendo today, but I actually liked the old Mario games in the NES (I'm not all about hating :) ).

Yes, even Mario.....(everyone pelts tomatoes at RPGWizard).....at least by that definition.

An RPG is really a game with a long storyline, a battle system where you use a menu to attack, use items, etc. (Although certain RPGs have exceptions to this rule) and you are usually trying to save the world from ultimate destruction, endless torment, or the like. At least, that's the basic gist behind most of the RPGs that I know. :)

You can throw definitions at me all day, and I'll still castrate you for calling it an RPG. Honestly what part of it is alike the likes of Final Fantasy, Morrowind, or even Secret of Mana fer chrissakes?

Actually you COULD say that Zelda (at least Legend of Zelda on NES, Link to the Past on SNES, and the GB Zelda's) is very much like Secret of Mana in terms of camera angle and style of fighting. Of course I agree with Kane that Zelda is in no way an RPG, I'm just playing the devil's advocate here :D

Re: What is your favorite RPG

Let me put it another way then:
How many regular enemies do you have to kill in Zelda to increase your stats? What? You can't do that? You can only get items to do that? You mean to say Zelda has more in common with Tomb Raider than Secret of Mana? I'd never have guessed that those two piles of crap were so similar oO

You really do have a very narrow interpretation of what an RPG is. Zelda is an Action/Adventure/RPG. Just because it doesnt contain the elements of what you deem as a suitable RPG. Does not mean It's not an RPG by someone elses standards.

Zelda would be listed as an RPG in "any" Video game magazine. Or video game website. And Rightfully so.

Why must RPG's all follow the stereo typical and boring japanese storybook style of gameplay? There really is a lot more to an RPG than that.

I could sit here and tell you that the Games imported from Japan like Final Fantasy, Dragon quest ect arent really Role Playing Games. Because they just follow a linear set storybook enviroment.

Re: What is your favorite RPG

Not rightfully so. Simply because it's been known as an RPG in the past.
RPGs evolved with better plots and better stat building. Zelda is still back in the stone ages, gameplay wise.
It now seems OK to call it an RPG because it's set in a medival, swords and sourcery world.
I can see no RPG elements in that game apart fro mthe fact that you are playing as the main character. If we used such a wide interpretation, everything from Metal Gear Solid to Hitman to even Doom. We have Genre definitions for a reason.

No RPG elements? Come on, You have a common enemy, The urge to grow stronger to slay that enemy.

Zelda has charactor interaction, Fantasy Style Play, Very Unlinear style gameplay. Minor charactor development.

I think you're letting your personal bias against the franchise determine your opinion on this game. Which still plays Very much like an Action/RPG.

Just because it does not use an experience/gold system typical to every friggin japanese style RPG in existence. And does something a tad bit more unique does not make it a non RPG experience.

There's a game called Magic Knight Rayearth for the Saturn that plays exactly like Zelda. has a good storyline. Ect. Also Shining Wisdom. Which plays very much like Zelda. It's also considered an RPG.

JUst because the games dont carry forth an experience sysem, Does not make them a non RPG. All three of these games carry a storyline with them

I think The Wind Waker turned off most Zelda lovers by the cel-shading. It's still got gameplay. BTW, who said anything about zelda? :p

I'd like a thread about why people hate Zelda all of a sudden.

Re: What is your favorite RPG

Yes, but if you allow Zelda to be an RPG, like I said, you open the floodgates to most every other game under the sun.
charactor interaction
Hel lalmost every game released today has this.
Fantasy Style Play
So now you'll be telling me that Die by the Sword is an RPG
Very Unlinear style gameplay
Unlinear? Zelda? You have to do everything pretty much in order.... at least you did last time I played. Hell Hitman is less linear than Zelda.
Minor charactor development
Once again, every game under the sun today has this to a greater or lesser extent.
My basic definition of an RPG is stat building. Basicaly....
Dungeon Siege 2 has relatively simple stat building.
Zelda has pickups. Like Mario. Like Metroid

are u sure about that, ppl said that at the beginning but once u play it u forget about the cel shading. have u ever played Zelda: WW?

Re: What is your favorite RPG

Zelda isn't even an adventure RPG. People like to classify it as such just because of the medieval setting.

BTW, I don't like Zelda, either. But I had some fun while playing OoT :)

Nope I'm telling you that RPG is all interpretation. The games you call RPGS to me are nothing but japanese oriented Storybooks where you dont assume the role of anybody. And preordained what will happen to the charactor before you even load the game up.

You dont determine the outcome of the Game. The game determines the outcome.
I dont care for the games you enjoy. Xenosaga. Final Fantasty, Secret of Mana. Because they are no more than storybooks with graphics.

That is "not" Role Playing. But It is classified as an RPG none the less.

Who are you to say Zelda is not an RPG because it does not meet your standards as an RPG?

Unlinear? Zelda? You have to do everything pretty much in order.... at least you did last time I played. Hell Hitman is less linear than Zelda
In Most Zelda games the world is open to you. You can complete Dungeon A B C D E F and G in order you choose. You are not forced down a specific path to complete a story. Like your so called "RPGS" that you have listed above would.

So which game is less linear now?

Once again, every game under the sun today has this to a greater or lesser extent.

You have every right to your interpretation of what an RPG is. But that doesnt really give you the right to tell someone they cant list Zelda as there favorite RPG. Because. To them it might be an RPG.

Website, Gaming Magazines have listed Zelda as an RPG, So have they listed Final Fantasy. These game are RPGS according to the "industry standard" of what an RPG is.

You shouldn't tell someone that they cant list Zelda as an RPG by the standards they deem as adequate for an RPG.

Incase you're not saying you do. Some quotes for you

I rest my case. Just because you dont believe its an RPG, does not make it one by alot of other peoples standards. Because IMO. None of the games you enjoy as "RPGs" are really role playing games at all.
