July 02, 2003 - In a presentation made in Europe today, THQ outlined the major new features and the substantially impressive set of improvements it has planned for this years WWE SmackDown...Here Comes the Pain.
After listening to consumer and press feedback, THQ has decided to overhaul its wrestling game from top to bottom. This year's effort features everything from a new grappling system, four different types of grapples, a countering system, more strategy and moves sets overall for starters. The full list of improvements range from storyline, moves sets, graphics, individual wrestler characteristics, submissions, and animations. Here's the presentation in bullet form The New Game Features include: New Grappling-Based System
  • Four different types of grappling with corresponding move sets tailored to that specific grapple (power move set, submission move set, quick move set and signature move set)
  • Four available moves out of each grapple based on superstar's real life move sets
  • New two-button countering system
  • Ability to drag superstars around the mat before putting a move on them.

  • See all the new moves available to your disposal to inflict pain on your opponent.
Graphics so real you can touch them
  • A complete overhaul of the graphics engine. Each superstar will now look exactly like their real life counterpart.
  • 3D crowd.
  • Blood.
Season Mode

  • New original storyline.
  • New money earning system with a whole new shop zone filled with compelling unlockables.
  • Previously mentioned key problems with season mode addressed.
Overall Presentation Refinements
  • Redesign of sound, camera angles and special effects will put you right in the action with cinematic experience.
  • Superstar Voiceover.
New Game Modes and Match Types

Updated Roster
  • More than 60 superstars including all the top talent.
  • For the first time ever in a WWE videogame...LEGENDS.
THQ wants to redefine it, not merely improve it. Every aspect is being overhauled based on press and consumer feedback. We'll have more on WWE SmackDown...Here Comes the Pain in the near future.
So droolable. :nod::agree::dance::guitar::nod::guitar::agree::dance::bounce::yippee::thewave:

Is there a possibilit for more?

haha. its like wrestling bliss, eh? but i see they've included legend wrestlers. won't that make everything seem little weird?

legend wrestlers aye...sounds like THQ is trying to wipe some competition by eliminating the "Legends of Wrestling (Acclaim) novelty...We don't thin it will be weird..it seems to work in Americanized football and some other sports games where you can play as or against teams from years ago.

All the changes sound tastey..but the redesign of the control system makes us a lil worried...Thats one of the things that made the Smackdown series appealing was the simplistic control and ease of play...

I am pretty much sure that it'll still feel like a Smackdown, that same "pick-up-and-play".

Legends as unlockable is gonna be really awesome. Bret Hart ..........and.....wait; The legends are still wrestling? :hmmm:

well, it'd be interesting to play with macho man, who i assume has finally retired?
are the controls for smackdown like the thq n64 wrestling games? those were the best controls.

Your question is quite inanswerable by me. Even though N64 had the best wwf game so far (uptill before Smackdown SYM), I haven't played any THQ N64 game....

NONE!

yeah big deal :p

Heh, weight detection.. finally.

This should be a pretty sweet iteration. I like how they're improving the grappling system and the submission mechanics. After playing Def Jam Vendetta, I saw what Smackdown lacks. The idea of working a specific body part down with its own health meter is something all wrestling games should have. The graphics are already amazing and the game looks good.. I wish they would add the ability to destroy the ring, though. Lesnar's superplex on Show was truly awesome.

edit: if they put that ego freak Trips on the cover again I'm going to go insane. It's not even his show!

There are definetly gonna use Lesner as the person on the boxart. I think so far JBI had the best cover art ;)

And cabal, about the graphics; I am not very much sure. All that I have seen are extremely low quality small pics which seemed to be cut off from some clip. Do you have links to better images?

And please keep the RAW series away from this thread. It is a disgrace to WWE gaming....

Well, SYM has sweet graphics and they can't really do worse in a new game (in terms of graphics), only better. You've probably checked IGN and Gamespot.. other than that, I can't think of any sites that would have screenshots.

As for Raw being a disgrace.. I'd rather pin the blame on Trips, not the show he domineers. ;)

Only IGN and Gamespot doesn't have HCTP screens. But that is because THQ hasn't officially released any direct feeds.

All we have are 200x200 screens that were photographed from a TV :p

Even from those images you can tell that HCTP looks fantastic.
