It's been a while since I've played videogames, well, I mean like daily. The last thing that really got me addicted was Aliens vs. Predator 2 and that was like 2 months ago. I guess I don't play as much as I want to lately.

There was about a one year period (which only ended a few days ago) where I played about 2 hours of gaming (in total). However, I just got a nice cheap GF4 MX440 AGP8X, so I've been divulging myself in some GTA3 and UT2003 :)

During the summer I plan to obsessively play and beat everyone at RA2 (again) so expect my gaming hours to go significantly :)

I'm trying to cut down on how long I play. I only played 1 hour of FF8 for the whole weekend (probably because I can't beat that 3 headed dragon on disc 2 in Seifer's garden), and focusing my time on other things, such has logo creation and descent level editing ;)

More questions about gaming

I consider all of your comments and votes to be really interesting really. I haven't had a lot of comments on game addiction but I guess this is doesn't interest you all that much.

By reading all of the posts so far, I've realized only one user as mentionned cutting down the amount of time spent gaming. To that user, could you tell me why you decided to cut down your gaming time? What is the reason why you decided to spend less time gaming and schedule your life differently?

I was wondering wether gaming was like any other hobbies. Which is basically why I made this thread in the first place. When does something stops being fun and turns into an addiction. So one might say, as it was once my case, that there is some kind of pulsion to use the computer, no matter how. Addiction can take many forms, but this is one of them. Another one is when you've finished playing a gaming session and you didn't actually had fun doing it. :(

So basically, do you guys and girls consider there is such a thing as too much gaming? For those who have cut down their gaming time, with what kind of activities did you replace it? Ex: Job, sports, social, art etc...

Only thing I can say is... heretic ! :disgust: ;)

BTW it's not a dragon, it's a dog... as a matter of fact it's Cerberus, hell's gate's dog

Guess I've avoided the thread long enough. :p I only have one reason why I've decreased my gaming time, and that's anime. I sort of feel like I outgrew video games, as most are too simple for my tastes these days. Which I know sounds kind of ironic, considering I'm into anime now more than I was ever into video vames.

Of course gaming is. But is addiction necessarily a bad thing? As long as you don't let it control your life, liking a hobby a lot more than other people simply means you devote more attention to it than others. Everyone has to spend their life somehow; so why not just one or several activities instead of a lot?

But is addiction necessarily a bad thing?

Yes it is. Here's a definition of an addiction for you: broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful.

So, has the definition explains, an addiction is harmful in the sense you feel compulsed to do it. In our example, you always feel a need to play games whenever you have some free time. So basically when you're addicted to computer gaming, you let the games control your life, which is basically why an addiction is a bad thing, as you can't help yourself from playing games.

Which is why I questionned myself: Is computer like any other hobby (not: is computer gaming a hobby which answer is obvious). Let's say someone plays for 5 hours in a row daily. What over activity can you do for 5 hours straight?

The way I see it, you have control over a hobby as you do it whenever you want to. In the case of an addiction, you sacrifice certain things (Homework, job, grilfriend/boyfriend, social life) in order to be able to play for longer periods of time.

I am wondering wether the time spent gaming daily is an indicator of an addictive behavior.

I hope, Ryos, that these explanitions give you a better idea of what I'm looking for and my point of view on addictions in general. But should you feel that addictions can be a good thing, please demonstrate your point as I would certainly be interested to read your point of view.

Yeah... too much games is an addiction, but tell my familiy about the cigarettes addiction...

Never!! :p Descent has been my childhood game when I had my 486 computer.

I am trying to silence it, so it can't use that triple magic, but it's not working (like always). I'm definitely not playing it for a while. I skipped my homework playing it, so it's on hold for a while ;)

Well, in any case I still can't believe that I'm of the few guys who play for more than 4 hours... plus I spend no less than 6 hours at University or studying for it... my sleeping time has been greatly diminished :disgust:

Oh, to beat Cerberus just cast Reflect on him so when he casts triple and double the spell will be reflected to you... after that the thing is a piece of cake ;)
