Zerocopy: It's not an RPG. It's an action adventure. If you want an Action RPG, play Threads of Fate, or Kingdom Hearts, or Secret of Mana. Ignorant people think it's an RPG because of the fantasy theme.

>Apparently, Exodus, Kane and zerocopy can't read the "for fans" in the topic.

I did read the topic, and as I said, I'm a fan of bashing Zelda

>I did read the topic, and as I said, I'm a fan of bashing Zelda

Ah-ha! Kane is shallow! BTW, doesn't it bother people that Link's arms are longer than his legs? I think his head looks fine, but his body looks retarted.

The dungeon puzzles are fun and much more inspired than the "bring this item to that place" game play of many RPG's or "hack your way through the dungeon to the boss." The only flaw of Majora's Mask's is that there were only 4 dungeons instead of the 3(pendants)+1(midboss)+8(sage/maiden)+1(finalboss) = 13 that they introduced in Zelda 3 and Ocarina, that's all.

The thing about WW that seriously turned me off were the graphics. Can Nintendo do anything w/ graphics that aren't so child-safe? The graphics are so bland that I got bored playing the demo in CompUSA. I'm well aware that this is meant to be a "cell-shaded" style but this game just lacks detail. If they really wanted to do this style correctly, they ought to use sprites or atleast get some texture detail in there.

Cel-shaded graphics aren't meant to have detail. Cel-shading doesn't use texturing and therefore lacks what you refer to as "detail". Also, the graphics aren't meant to be "child-safe", heres what Miyamoto-san had to say about it,
Actually, when I first saw the toon shaded Zelda I was very surprised and excited by it. However, I was startled by the response we got from the press when we showed it off the first time. They all said, "Oh, so is Nintendo now taking Zelda and trying to aim it only at kids?" Really, the whole concept we had behind it was that we thought it was a very creative and new way to show off Link. All of a sudden it had been interpreted as Nintendo's new strategy, and that was a shock for us.
And indeed Miyamoto-san is correct, its meant to be creative and different, its not trying to make the Zelda aimed at kids. Wind Waker would look horrid if they used sprites, unless it was 2D Topdown perspective which would make A LOT more people not want to play it.

There are cell shaded games like Wild Arms 3 or the upcoming Dragon Quest 8 that do have generous detail yet has a decent cartoon style. I don't mind creativity but not when it looks this bland. Miyamoto hardly dispels the media's accusations w/ his claim of this being creative new new way of representing Link. You'll note he never directly denies it, and his creativity was probably purely intended to drawing a younger audience to the game, not for the sake of doing something new. I feel it really is more childish than any of the other zeldas and ruins the epic feel that your quest had before in the N64 quests. It's not a bad marketing strategy on the part of Nintendo but I for one lost interest.

raqia i think you shouldn't lose interest, i know the graphics are kinda lame , but a game is not only about graphics, the story is amazing , finaly we have a hero that has a sister to save from the great ganon he looks to much mysterious for one that came back 100 years later from the triforce seal, also this game has the largest map ever ,(for everybody that played zelda:eek:ot) there is 49 islands so 49 squares in the map and each square is the size of 3 fields (well the field that i'm refering is the one that connected lake hylia with hyrule town with other places of the map like lon lon ranch, etc),also there is tons of new caracters, lots of secret tunnels in islands and lots of secret chets under water, its gonna take months to pass this game because there is new games,a lot of new optional stuff to do, and also for your info. rpg means role playing game , your taking link's role, this game is a rpg.
also even if it looks childish, kids don't know zelda's roots like us and they never played the old zelda games, they don't have the same paxion for zelda as we old timers have, its a great way to make kids love the zelda world and learn what we know about it, we also should be open to new things and even if the game looks childish, dude the entire game is way different from the demo and believe me you won't get boored with this one.
sorry if i was harsh but some truths have to be said!!!!

If that's true, then Nintendo surely has losts its marbles. Nintendo is aggressively trying to attract mature gamers, and by making this game appealing only for younger audiences is stupid. And don't even start with they realized the fact after they started development on WW since they specificially started Retro on Metroid Prime for adult content. He chose the cartoony aspect to fit closer to the actions that occur in the game: launching characters in barrels, talking boats/fish, etc. Those things would look way too bizzare in a "realistic" world.

Above all, miyamoto wanted a light-hearted adventure, he felt that the series was getting too dark. In any case, it seems that is what the public wants, so we'll see what the future holds.

I also preferred the darker style, but after playing wind waker, the graphics fit the gameplay, and it all comes together nicely. WW is purely artistic, and if you look at it from that perspective, you should be extremely impressed.

WA3 and DQ8 hardly have all the active elements zelda does (partical effects, heat waves, wind, swaying clothes/hair/grass, rippling water). How can you call those static cel (not cell, the graphics aren't about prision or biology) shaded games not bland?

I love Zelda games and I think I would enjoy playing this one, but despite the very good points you have all made, I really don't enjoy looking at the graphics. What you consider artistic is really a matter of taste and I think the cel-style (thanks for pointing out this mistake;)) is kitsch in that it's just copying the volumes of Disney style cartoons that preceed it stylistically. In no way is the style itself innovative or particularly appealing to me, it may never have been done on a console but I thank the heavens that it hasn't. Sure lots of other video games copy each other in visual style etc..., but my point is only that Zelda isn't any better just because its style is somewhat new to videogames.

Alias, those features that you mentioned about Zelda are very nice I'll admit. I remember being impressed when I first broke open a vase or lit a torch on fire. I still think those nice touches are too few and far in between. What I mean by nice graphics is that each static frame that comprise the animation looks nice by itself. That simply isn't true of WW during the close ups of link or enemies. They're also trying to using a 3-D engine to try to pull off a cartoon effect, but I really don't think the rigid geometry of a 3-D engine effectively captures the "warping" you get in actual cartoons like when you walk around the rigid levels or or fight that lava centipede boss. I could tell very distinctly that these things are composed of a lattice of solid polygons when I played the game and the ultimate effect of cell shading made the game seem like it was stuck in low detail or untextured mode. I think they should have stuck to sprites for this project, and that Miyamoto was mislead by what a 3-D engine can do well right now.

Perhaps in time it really will look as nice as a cartoon and I hope that day comes soon. This is only my taste about the graphics of WW. I frankly don't like the art style of Samurai Jack either but I love the show and the the fluid quality of its animation. You're right on target with your points Morbidus, I will probably end up playing the game and probably enjoying it so I should just stop complaining about the graphics and enjoy the rest of the game. :p

.....well i don't know what to say Raqia, thank i guess!!
i've been thinking a little bit and in fact the first temple in the wind waker was easy and the second one(earth temple) is going the same way, i think it will leave the game a little bit boring for the people that played 2-3 or more games of zelda because we basically already know the majoridy of the secrets, like me, i've played :
zelda: link's awakening dx
zelda: a link to the past
zelda: oracle of seasons
zelda: oracle of ages
zelda: ocarina of time
zelda: majora's mask
and now the wind waker

i only haven't played the two zelda's that came out for the first nintendo system.
having something new for people like me its kinda hard because we know it all, for the wind waker i'm looking foward for the size of the map to see if i can remember stuff well, and for the new caracters, because in zelda: oot and majora's mask were the same and it was kinda lame.
i like cartoons so i don't mind the graphics, even knowing that i'm 19 years old ( a big guy like me playing this type of games , what a lame ass) , you will expect every kind of person playing the wind waker.

well done Asz, but for people that don't wanna go there i'll post it here.

-""We did a comic about it already but I think it's funny that I go for months without playing my Gamecube and then when I DO play it the game I play is amazing. From Mario Sunshine to Metroid to Zelda these are absolutely stellar titles. Zelda in particular stands out as one of the most polished gaming experiences I've ever had. Let the kids argue in their forums about its "new look" if they want to. They think it looks stupid or corny or whatever and that is to be expected. The fact is, most people don't appreciate art and that is what Zelda is. A group of children giggling in front of a nude painting doesn't mean it's a terrible painting. They simply are not sophisticated enough to appreciate it. It is the same with Zelda. Don't let the idiots dissuade you from picking up this game and enjoying it for what it is, an unparalleled and inspired work of interactive art.

""A couple days ago I mentioned that I thought kids who did not like the new look of Zelda were just too immature to appreciate it. Then I got this e-mail:

"So we are not dumb enough to appreciate the wonderful queerness that is the new zelda look?"

I rest my case.

But seriously, these guys think that Zelda is a game for kids. Well only KIDS would care that a game looks like it is for kids. It's like when you are 14 and your mom wants to get a picture of you on the merry go round with your little sister but you don't want to get on because it's for kids. Eventually you grow out of that phase and you can appreciate just having fun whether it be on the back of an undulating wooden horse or in front of a cell shaded video game.

""Lots of people are telling me things like this:

"It just happens that I think that the way that they implemented the technique for Wind Waker makes it look like ass. It's just personal taste"

I agree with you 100%, it IS personal taste. What I am saying is you have bad taste. This could be due to the fact that you are simply too young to appreciate it or maybe you are just dumb.

"No actually cel shaded graphics look like ****, period. Just because you're an artist doesn't make your opinion any more valid than mine."

Actually when it comes to art it does. When it comes to plumbing is a plumbers opinion more valid than yours?

"My opinion is that cell shaded graphics look like **** because they have no textures or bumpmapping whatsoever. It is also my opinion that anyone who plays that game looks like they are 3 years old, oh no wait, that's a FACT not an OPINION."

Thank you for proving my point.

I don't hold the opinions of Penny Arcade any higher than the thousands of other bloggers out there. In fact, they've bashed other comics that I've found very funny, and I find their unusually high endorsement of somewhat dissappointing gamecube games like Luigi's Mansion or Mario Sunshine just a bit too fanatical for them to be a believable reviewer of video games. It's also abit pretty lame of them just to dismiss other people's points by saying "I rest my case" or making weak analogies to plumbing. I doubt connesieurs caviar or wine have any part in making the eggs or vintages they savor. Nintendo has made basically all my favorite games but I have to be honest with myself in accepting that there are dissappointments too. Just my 2 cents, don't get too riled up!

Thought I'd mention that the Japanese like Zelda about as much as me:
Final Fantasy X-2 has remained on spot one of the Japanese sales charts, selling an additional 213,987 copies to bring its total to an impressive 1,757,481 copies. [...] Nintendo's GameBoy Advance game Zelda: The Legend of the Four Swords dropped from spot 2 to 8, selling 45,970 copies this week to bring its total to 151,070 copies. Square's strategy RPG Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the GBA fell from spot 6 to 10. The game has sold 18,213 copies this week and 384,149 copies since its February 14th release. [...] Enix's Star Ocean: Til The End of Time, which sold another 11,174 copies this week for a total of 444,902 copies. [...] Nintendo's first Zelda title for the GameCube, Kaze no Takuto sold 4,500 copies this week for a total of 627,323 copies, thereby slipping to spot 35.
