Which one should I choose for my next semester?

a) Nihongo class, which

Cons : must pay RM90(USD 23.00++) per month that will not guarantee my achievement to master this difficult languange. I'm ok with hiragana & katakana but kanji is killing me :(

Pros: Watching anime with ease and w/o the subs. Clear understanding of what the characters are saying.

OR

b)fencing, which

Pros : I've been learning for 5 months now. The fee is quite cheap. Hoping to learn "Saber Thrust lvl 3" or "Super Cut lvl 2" and other super moves soon :p

Cons: Those thrusts are killing me hands . Saber & foil is ok coz not so heavy. But epee,using it for less than 10 minutes got my hand tired.

So, which one will it be? Is it :

-->Nihongo : muzukashi(hard) or kantan(easy) ?

-->Fencing : sabers, Zorro, cute girl instructor ;) ?

My vote goes to learing Japanese. I will start doing that myself as soon as possible, but again, thats only my opinion....

JAPANESE!

no doubt.... i know what i would choose... but it's your choice.

I would pick the fencing, but that's my opinion. It would be fun for me to dominate all the other students by using two hands to hold the saber instead of using one hand to hold the saber and the other for balance. You might use the first stance anyway, but the latter stance is what I see in all the pictures of fencing.

Nihongo will help you more in life, unless you are a god at fencing.
The Kanji are hard to learn, but if you work at it, they do get embedded in your head.

Hmm...with practice and training..eventually thrusts will no longer hurt..particularly since you will become stronger...but the same holds true for Nihongo...over time it will become easier.....

Here is the real question...do you prefer to be physically challenged or mentally...but we agree..Nihongo will be quite useful in the future...for now anime would be a perk...but much in the way of buisness..knowing the language puts you that much farther to a good future

Its nice to kno japanese and all, but no way you will be good enough to fluently and easily understand any anime. Unless they speak fairly slowly and speak in a first grade level. Its great to kno, and you do pick up things here and there, but not until MAYBE 3rd year will you be able to understand much.

if your the athletic type, go for fencing (and not just for the cute instructor :D)

if not, better stick with Nihongo, you will learn a lot and even get yourself a Japanese chick ;)

Learning Japanese is useless if you've got no one to practice it with. You might learn something from the start, but without constant use the skill erodes quickly.

Fencing is just flat-out useless because it has no practical applications in Real Life.

I would suggest you find other worthwhile applications for your money.

A bit of calisthenics and light weights training every morning does the same thing, costing you almost nothing.

To each his own, as always. He looks like he's on a budget (unless someone else is paying the lessons for him).

I say fencing. Use your youth and athleticism while you can to have fun and be physical. You can always learn japanese at a later time. Plus I don't know about where you live, but around here it's pretty hard to find a fencing teacher, whereas you could always learn japanese from books and tapes and people who speak the language.

good point there... but you must work your body in shape coz fencing demand a lot of training in agility and quick reaction... I tried to enter an org here in our school but I'm physically not motivated coz the rigid training...

There's a fencing org in Benilde, but AFAIK the cost for equipment is way too expensive over here.

I for one have thought about learning Kendo, of all sports. :heh: That's waaay cooler than fencing. :p
