I don't think so. I've got 512MB of RAM and my swap file is around 90MB. If I'm wrong please correct me.
If you open programs like Corel Draw, Illustrator, Photoshop, a database like Access or something like that and you're working with them at the same time with a file for Photoshop like 50MB TIFF image and editting it, Corel with a complex desing and a lot of images, illustrator the same and a huge database around 100MB and editting it too, and if that's not enough how about playing a game like Quake III, maybe 512MB aren't enough. I guess the best way to choose the amount of RAM is the kind of applications you're going to use, consider the above example.
Well known that games requires lots of RAM and VRAM, so 512MB are enough for gaming at the moment.
Why don't install a program like memturbo
that displays the RAM usage so you can figure out how your RAM is used on your system

heh, memturbo, gotta love that program... i usually end up having around 300 megs free and i have 512 megs... but i dont really think i even needed that extra 256 that much, but hey, if my dad wants to spend high amounts of money for computer parts when he doesnt even know if he need them, well, i aint gonna stop him

since this thread is about memory and stuff... why is that you loss memory. Like for example, my friend have a 128 MB of memory and it steadily decrease from 127 and now its around 126. Why is that so?

because ram is random access memory, whenever a program is run (even a background application you wouldnt notice) or when internet explorer is started, or when a windows process is run, it uses up part of your memory, memturbo is a really helpful program though since it does ram recovery, meaning, that if youre not doing anything it will automatically go up and if you reach like 10 ram it will run auto recovery to get your ram back to (about 400 for me im not sure how much you have)

For most applications you don't need more than 256MB.

And it also depends on the operating system. If you don't have WinNT/2k/XP then Windows will actually be slower with more than 256MB due to bad memory handling of the Win95/98/ME systems.

i have win xp atm so i dont really have to care about memory handling, anyways, i havent had a ram recovery in about a year since internet doesnt use up much ram and im usually here @ngemu so it allows time for my ram to naturally go back to about 350

Check your memory usage. If you find that the system is lagging with lots of swapping or that memory usage exceeds your physical RAM amount then get yourself another stick. Judge your performance first to see if you really need it. Personally I think 256 MB is enough for most people, unless you're into heavy graphics design or like to open 10+ programs at once.

I've used MemTurbo before and although it frees up a sizeable chunk of memory it also erases the system cache so it might cause some slowdowns sometimes (since it has to reload all the data again). The memory usage goes back up in a little while though.

hey, do any of you know the program rain??? does it do anything like memturbo and other speed-related program???

rain is for cooling the CPU
