And ESCAPE. There was more than one occasion when I wanted to enter a game's menu and reflexively hit ESC, closing the emu and losing my progress.
On that note, I actually do use Alt on my VBA button layout, because my keyboard has issues with multiple button presses, so Alt+X could potentially come up.

I use both emulators.

No$GBA is my main one, since its faster than Desmume on almost every game I try. Its also more stable (for me), and stretches to my screen in a better way than Desmume (for some reason, everytime I try to stretch the image on Desmume, I get huge pixels, no matter which filtering I use.

Desmume doesn't seen to like my PC. Most games I try are slow, even New Super Mario Bros. starts to skip frames and presents severe slowdowns on some points, while it works fullspeed in No$GBA 2.6a.

Lastly, No$GBA + Nozoomer is a win in my book. Most graphic issues can be fixed with the EX options, and the save battery file is fantastic (also, I LOVE being able to keep each DS screen on a different monitor ;) ).

The only reason I also have Desmume is because some games (specially some of the newer ones) have too many unfixable issues with No$GBA... But it still pains me having to play them at something different than 100% speed. :p

Desmume focuses on accuracy, which is why it's slower for many people, but at the same time, there's plenty of room for the team to optimize speed. I don't use no$gba because many games have layering issues (final fantasy 4 for example) or bad audio (Super Mario 64 DS). Unfortunately, no$gba will never be updated.

The accuracy X performance discussion is old (and fun), and I'm ALWAYS on the side of the performance guys. No$GBA is a "rough around the edges" kind of emulator, but most of its issues can be fixed by using No$Zoomer (including layering issues from FF4).

Using 2.6a + newest no$zoomer, I can play most of my games without issues (including Dragon Quest IX, a game that I played for more than 100 hours).

Like I said before, Desmume doesn't seem to like my computer. While the 0.9.9 releases are indeed faster (tested only a couple of games though), I still can't get full speed in Mario 64, for example. And on my workplace's PCs, not even New Super Mario Bros. can be played at 100%, while both work quite good on No$GBA. Sound is buggy, but noise suppression helps a lot. :)

My only beef was being forced to choose the save type and didn't automatically detect resulting in a crash, and being forced to load a game immediately when the program is executed. Desmume doesn't require third party programs to get problematic games to run properly. If anyone can name one game that Desmume can't load, I'd love to hear it

Accuracy is all well and good, but only to an extent. I want emulators to be accurate, yes, but not to the point of being so accurate you need an overclocked Intel Core i7 Extreme and 16 GB DDR3 1666 MHz SDRAM to run at full speed. I think we all know what emulator we're talking about.

Each emulator has its pluses and minuses, so we can at least agree to disagree on that, right? ;)

Thoughts about Bsnes came into my mind... and I shiver... and a tear drops from my left eye when I remember that its easier to play Super Mario Galaxy on Dolphin than Super Mario All Stars on Bsnes...

For sure. Having more emulators to choose from is always better than having only one, right?

Its like the Snes9x X Zsnes discussion. There are people who claim Zsnes is better and only use it, while somes claim that Snes9x is better and only use it... I have both, love both... and use the one that works better for me in the game I'm playing at the moment. ;)

But, I admit that some emulator debates do get my blood boiling, such as Snes9x vs. Zsnes and why I believe Zsnes is infe---never mind. I'll stop there :emb:

Blood Boiling means anger/fury/rage...not that it gets him going.

But... but... but...

Women DO get my blood boiling. They are whinny, complicated and changes their personalities every day!

This is the boat------------------------> This is you missing it

Seriously, people who ***** about what emulator is better without showing any evidence or otherwise backing up a claim pisses me off. Like those who say Zsnes has better emulation than Snes9x...well that right there is a no-brainer, there is is enough evidence to back up that claim; I can come up with plenty of evidence proving why it's better. Granted people are entitled to their opinions why they prefer one over the other, and I can respect that, but when blatant lies or misinformation is being spread...well you get the picture.:p

you just put the entire definition of a fanboy in your statement >.>

one classic example, macs and/or apple in general :)
i do rather enjoy mac/apple fanboys defend their products, its quite hilarious.

The funny thing is, Macs still fall under the definition of PC; they compute, they're personal, they're PCs. The second you tell them that they'll foam at the mouth and bite your head clean off. But yeah, fanboys are all like that, and I admit that I get defensive about certain things, we all do.

ya i know, but being a fanboy doesnt mean you really like something or get defensive about something. As really liking something or defensing something is normal.

a fanboy does that, but will argue with you even though they are wrong, and you prove to them beyond a reasonable doubt they are wrong.
Also fanboys usually argue using no valid points of evidence other then just their opinion and made up "facts" lol

apple was just the best example i could come up with, because... lol omg

you dont even know the **** ive heard its crazy.
like i had some guy tell me that "macs are better then pcs (ya i loled just at that), because macs are made out of space grade titanium and use bullet proof glass for the screens"
like lol wtf? and no im not joking, that was word for word what they told me. they actually said titanium that is used on space shuttles...

its just that kind of stuff is like 24/7 with mac fanboys, they just make up all this **** its insane.

but ya this is probably as far off topic as possible now haha

No, you're right, it's something I have to work on, I admit that I've gone overboard far too frequently; there has to be a balance when debates are discussed in a civil manner. Man, you should see the "discussions" on IGN forums, there are some very rabid fanboys on there, I just laugh at their stupidity. No point in trying to talk sense into them, they'll turn around and emasculate you on sight.

*Sigh* Okay, no more derailing ;)

Desmume 0.99 is awesome, and I mean awesome; the games run at full speed that didn't run full speed before, like Final Fantasy IV, but it has a weird issue with the bottom screen map; it's all effed up. Might be a rendering issue.

I took a look at the bottom screen and was like "lolwut". Tried OpenGL 3.2, Soft Rasterizer, no dice
Image

It happened in all 0.99 GIT test builds including the official release, but not in 0.98 official. Something probably broke with how the emulator renders 2D maps.

the reason the bug isnt present in 0.9.8 is because it doesnt have the JIT dynamic recompiler.
The reason it happens in 0.9.9 is because your block size for the recompilier is set too high. (on earlier dev builds you went able to change it, and i believe it was always set to 100).

Lower that value to something lower.
i put mine at 10 (i tried 1, but with 4x HQ filters on opengl 3.2, synchronus N audio with advanced spu logic, and xaudio backend with cosine interpolation and frame skip at 0 some games i dropped below 60 fps on my main laptop, at 10 im always above 60)

i do not experience that problem at all with it at 10.

*ps dayam that screen border is HUGE. i keep mine at 5px narrow XD*

EDIT: i made a thread to discuss 0.9.9 here http://forums.ngemu.com/showthread.php?t=156287

How low can I set that value without sacrificing the speed boost?
Edit: Tried that, not a damn thing. It doesn't like loading from savestates. Does it have to be 10?
Edit 2: Tried 15, didn't affect FFIV at all, that's good.

But seriously, why does Dragon Quest have to use the Software Render mode? If you use OpenGL, the 3D disappears.

Weird, using the movie record function "deletes" the SRAM.

im not sure how low you can go to make it so that problem doesnt occur, i jsut set my primary laptop to 10 since thats the lowest i can go while keeping 60+ fps in all games with the settings i use (since i like max out graphics and audio quality XD)

the exact value will have to be trial and error for all games.

as for dragon quest, the game is 3D with open gl or the softrasterizer. But the way the sprites are made it kind of looks like 2.5D.

The reason using softrasterizer make it look "more 3d" is because of the option "enable edge marking" what it does it outlines all the edges in black, which causes more contrast between edges, giving it more of a "3d effect"

just have it on softrasterizer and enable/disable edge marking and you can see it easier.

But we should probably move discussion of desmume 0.9.9 and its problems or w/e to the thread i made (link in previous post), since this is more of something to compare no$gba vs desmume.
