Well, you still can install cheap hard drives and cheap RAM into Apple computers. You can also install cheap GPUs in Mac Pro as long as it's a chipset supported by Apple.

And if you know the Hackintosh community, you'd know that it's possible to install completely stock vanilla OS X on some configurations that contain the same things Apple support. ;)

It's not Apple closing down their ecosystem. It's how you and everybody else wants to see them. Once you get past the prejudice, you'll see that Apple is not doing any better or worse than their competitors. They're just yet another computer OEM... plus they have in-house software development.

I personally don't care much about the patent system or such because I know I won't ever get into it. If I were to get into it, I would research the living **** out of the stuff that I'm working on to make sure I don't run into licensing problems before pushing it out.

They aren't just another OEM with in-house software development... there only goal is to limit you as far as you just posted... cheap hard drives, chip RAM or cheap GPUs... but what about other cheap components or even better third party components??? they are dead because they won't allow them.

The hackintosh community is well known to me since i used hackintosh myself. However is mostly a pain in the a$$ if you happen to own a hardware that isn't really supported. Apart from that there are some issues and in most of the cases a wrong official update will ruin everything so is not an option. The thing is they aren't just another open OEM they are here to take everything and to push there own stuff only and that is something i hate with passion.

I would really hate to enter a shop and see Apple products only or Apple certified ones instead of the awesome variety of hardware we see nowdays. Its just great to enter a shop and see Toshiba, Sony, Samsung, LG, HP, ASUS and a hell bunch of manufacturers creating and offering there products. By offering different products there is competition and where is competition there are price drop now and then were the customer profits from it. Having a dictatorship we will sort of see the end of it which is exactly what Apple look for with there actual philosophy.

If they happen to reach the top level and replace Microsoft then i will officially switch to Linux and support the ones that rejects such idiology. As i said before is like switching from south korean goverment to north korean one which is silly.

Then you're just being unreasonable.

Not to say the Linux community is bad... but there is a legit reason why Linux holds even less marketshare than Mac does. ;)
Linux and derivatives hold a much higher marketplace than macos. Most embedded devices use linux-based OSes.

Excluding ios the only place macos and windows hold a high share are personal computers. Most servers use linux, adsl modems use linux, routers use linux, cellphones too use linux. It's not that I like it, it's just how things are.

The Apple hardware is overpriced and very limited becuase of apples choke hold and I just cna not get behind a company that does that and then all these pointless law suites on top of that and Apple is just to be avoided in my opinion. I use Androind on my mobile devices and all the pcs and laptops in the house use either windows vista or windows 7. If Apple does some how maange to bypass microsoft in the desktop space I will be switching to linux and with vavle jumping on the linux ship with steam that should pave the way for more video game companies which mean we should see a lot more AAA games for linux. I could never get W.I.N.E. working on linux for some reason. I can not stand ubuntu or their crappy unity UI. I will stick to Gnome 2 as much as I can if it gets tot he point where I can not I will proabably switch to KDE as they are not going the way of unity/gnome3,metro and that is a great thing in my eyes. KDE is sticking to the tradiontal style of the desktop and that is a huge plus in my book. The other three are slapping mobile style UIS on a desktop and thats is no good. I will never use an apple product so I have zero idea where the OS X UI stands but if I really wanted to I could easily slap a MAC OSX theme onto Gnome2 and call it a day. That is what I love about linux its open soucred and there are so many choices and you are not tied down to a very small amount of either software looks or hardware ala apple. and you can easily grab an old copy of a distro and use it on ancient hardware if you need to. and it is all basically free unlike apple and microsoft.

I meant desktop Linux and its distros.

If you absolutely must count Linux on embedded, mobile, and server, then you must also count iOS because iOS is derived from Mac OS X (factually so).

And last count had Mac OS X computers surpassing desktop Linux in many stat counters.

But that aside, I think there is some misunderstanding here. I don't think Mac OS will ever make Apple the dominant force in the industry. No. While the software is awesome, it's obvious that the hardware is limiting, pricey, and generally not well-received. (hey, @ruantec help me out here ;))

It's the iPad and similar devices derived from it that will make Apple the dominant playing force... if it hasn't already made them the dominant playing force. That's why Microsoft is responding to the iPad rather to Mac OS X. They know the iPad will be big, and if they don't have any sort of response now, they'd be left behind.

BUT (big "but") I think the way Microsoft is doing it is... wrong. They are still trying to mesh desktop and mobile together. iPad is pure mobile, without any trace of desktop, and that's why it succeeded... because people don't have to deal with desktop **** like BSODs and drivers on the iPad.

So to succeed, I think Microsoft needs to realize mobile and desktop need to be separate.

Also on that note, I love Win 8 desktop (no, seriously), but I don't like it when Metro is somehow meshed together with that!

And I love Metro on my UMPCs, but... having to go back to desktop 50% of the time is just... ugly.

I did not exclude ios from the market share or something. I merely mentioned that if you don't count mobile entertainment devices macos has only the desktop market share.

Windows has the same share, plus some of the server market.

Linux... well, linux in one form or another is everywhere. Even if you take the derivatives out (*nix, android) linux distros can compile and run for every other platform you can thing of, almost any embedded device out there can run the thing... and most of them do so.

A computer is still a computer, with an integrated input and/or output device or without it as long as there is a way to communicate with it then it is a computer. When it comes to computers of all sorts linux is the most widely used OS out there.

As for desktops... people nowadays move into mostly using embedded devices and the companies follow the trend, not much damn is given any more. There's a reason why M$ pushed a seemingly full-featured version of their primary OS on embedded devices.

Anyway, computers are not limited just to the desktop ones so next time you intend to only include the desktop market make it obvious from the very start.

Yeah, it's called kernel panic for macos stuff...

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxNpRfnQHYs

Linux and Mac OS are both Unix. If you count *nix, then you might well say Mac OS is Linux.

Seriously, that's generalization.

Also if you say anything is pretty much a computer, then the random calculators (TI89 for instance) can also be counted as computers.

But I am sure many people will agree that a phone (like the iPhone) or a tablet (like the iPad) can NOT be counted as computers.

Yeah, it's called kernel panic for macos stuff...
Kernel panic exists for Linux, too, you know. :innocent:

Now, good luck finding the same thing for iOS. (Android also has kernel panic, but it's masked by the interface)

But seriously, it's not about Mac vs Windows vs Linux. I didn't even mention Mac until @ruantec did.

Btw... i'm quite impressed with the progress of the hackintosh community. I was able to install Montain Lion without a single issue and is working great apart from the missing drivers. It was a pain in the a$$ in the past but it seems to be easier now.

To complete the combo OSX Montain Lion start with a similar animation to the one i coded for @ES lol!

I'll be happy if we get back to discussing about Windows 8. Who cares about OS X? :p
Sure....

Windows 8 rocks! :p

Apart from the Metro UI i personally think Windows 8 works incredibly well. Also even if i don't like metro myself for my desktop computer i believe it does a nice job on mobile machines.

Like I said, Metro was great on my UMPC. And the desktop mode was great on my laptop and desktop.

I just don't like how I'm taken to the desktop 50% of the time on UMPC and then taken to Metro 50% of the time on desktop/laptop.

It'd be MUCH better if Microsoft was to separate the two. ;)

I hope the stupid journalists at Kotaku can shut up/stop covering all those "Win8 is bad for gaming" stuff if the only real argument for that is the Marketplace thing. Marketplace is not a bad thing, you can still run Steam/Impulse/Origin/whatever. Or complain about launching games from Games screen... all Windows post-Vista had a Games folder, which no one *****in uses, so what's the big deal?

So far, almost all of the stuff on my Steam library run correctly, except for the few stubbornly WinXP-only few. When the drivers mature, pretty sure it'd run faster than Win7.

I did it to make RAP happy and just for 24 hours.... after that i will burn that HDD with fire or melt it in hell :p
If you could get Revelations 2012 running on it, it would have the same effect, although I hear long term exposure to the game can lead to buying Sony products and long term brain damage  :p I hear supporting Apple products is equally as hazardous! :p

Off topic, did Al Gore invent Apple after inventing the Internetz? :innocent:

Don't worry.. i use Hackintosh so i'm not directly supporting the evil after all but more like toying with it :p

What the hell i'm doing?
