...Command & Conquer Generals 2, and it's going to be on the Frostbite 2 engine (!), of all things.

The speculation was right. Bioware's next title is a Command & Conquer title. This new Victory Games studio is a renamed Bioware studio I guess?

Oh, and it's also PC exclusive.
IGN: How does Generals 2 differ from what fans remember of the first one? Does it still involve the traditional RTS mechanics of base building and army management?

Jon Van Caneghem: One of our main goals is to bring C&C back to the roots that have made it one of the most popular and beloved properties in the strategy genre and that revolves around the core gameplay. The player is the General and it's up to them to create and take control of these huge, massive armies. We're definitely bringing some new elements to the table as well, but it's very important for us to bring C&C back to its foundation and that's through action-packed gameplay that also requires you to be cerebral.
It sounds like they learned from the mistakes of Command & Conquer 4, so we'll have to see where this goes. I'm more of a fan of the Tiberium or Red Alert universes though.

So EA gobbled up BioWare as well? That went by me.
Anyway, back to the roots sounds good. Guess they saw how Starcraft 2 did good with the nostalgia factor.
Generals was ever the oddball of the series, with its war on terror and Imperial China theme and its lack of cutscenes.
I hope they do some hammy acting this time around. It's just so much a staple of the franchise. It also helps conveying a kind of storyline. Generals' missions felt very disjointed, hopping you from one battlefield to the next, never feeling any sort of achievement for your cause.

It's not BioWare. EA just renamed one of their other studios BioWare Victory since BioWare is perceived as quality these days and is pretty much the only reputable named studio left under EA.

I wasn't a huge fan of Generals, but it was a lot of fun with friends. I'm glad it sounds like they learned from CnC4 which was a huge let down for me as a tiberium fan. I still play Red Alert 3 to this day and it's still a lot of fun. Hopefully this will be as good as or even better than Ra or Tiberium Wars.

Ha, you say that like the game is really old. There's people who still play the older ones.
Well I do see it as old lol. I would love to play Tiberium Sun and Yuri's Revenge against other people, but it's kinda hard finding people to play against. For me anyway :(

I would take you up on that, but they are installed on my other PC (dedicated for older games; the newer OSes and widescreen LCDs and such don't do it for me there), so it's not something I can do on a whim, and I'm probably hardly as good at either of those two titles. I never played Tiberium Sun in multiplayer, although I was "alright" at Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge. Had you said Tiberium Wars or Kane's Wrath, I'd jump on that opportunity.

I don't have TS or YR installed though lol. I do have Tiberium Wars installed, but honestly, I don't have a legit copy anymore. I should have learned my lesson after my bro in law lost my SF4, but I guess I'm too nice -_-'

I was basically saying the same thing about not having them installed. They are, but another PC I don't usually have set up, so it wouldn't matter.

Tiberium Wars will probably go on sale for $10 (and Kane's Wrath for $5) like they have been for many holiday sales and the odd sale. I actually have three copies. One was my first physical copy, another was a EA Download Manager (now Origin) purchase in 2008 for my sibling to play on my other PC with me until he got his copy, and my third was a Steam copy since it was on sale and I wanted to free up my physical copy.

Although I don't like using steam much because they sometimes mess up with their updates. But I think I'll buy this month. I've been wanting to play multplayer in Kane's wrath for a long time.

Man EA had me fooled with that Tiberium Alliances trailer. I thought it was another Tiberium Wars, but it's just an MMO... meh

Well, didn't Battlefield 3 do the same thing? They're probably afraid it'll hurt DLC sales as you said. They're making a big mistake if modding is out though. If there's one series modding and user content and the community in general is such a big part of, this one is it. That's been one of the things the series has been known for. User content and the community has been what it's been about. I'm worried about this new team/studio.

Generals was EA's series of the three anyway, so if they're going to mess one up, I'd rather it be that one. I never played the first (outside the demo), and while it was alright in it's own ways, I'm much more of a Tiberium and then Red Alert universe fan myself.

I've a lot of fun and good times messing with making stuff from skins to maps and even tweaking units and maps and such. I still do so to this day. With Tiberian Twilight, it seems this series' best days are behind it (some would argue that even if it doesn't become the case of no modding).

I'll still be keeping an eye on it though. I still have yet to give the full game of the first a run through. I plan on picking up The First Decade soon so I get id of the numerous discs I have from The Command & Conquer collection as well as the ISOs of the freeware earlier titles. If the sequel is bad enough though, I'll pass. i tried to force myself through Command & Conquer 4 mostly for the story and to see how the experience played out. About that... yeah... (didn't happen; I got a few missions in and will have to force myself to get back to it).

They're probably afraid it'll hurt DLC sales as you said.
I suspect theyre increasingly going with ingame transactions as primary revenue driver for hits. Look at it this way (after installed purchases and building on an active userbase to sell things to, without needing to go free2play to generate it).

DLC caps revenue and spending per capita.
Ingame item purchase (like in Steam Workshop and the Sims 3) is pretty much an infinite revenue stream, easy to promote and tweak.
Compared to subscription systems like WoW's or CoD Elite (worse caps, but more predictable revenue stream), its easy to see why the second is more attractive for games kept long alive.

If they think modding affects DLC sales they are stupid, that's all i'm saying, especially in this type of game. Unless by DLC they just mean some third rate maps that under normal circumstances nobody would give a damn, in that case yeah it might affect them.

Surely you didnt actually think theyd sell an expansion DLC at a measly ten dollars, when they could nickel and dime part separately for more.
For all you known, just access to all the technology tree in the game might not be free. Let's admit it, you'd totally pay for unlocking snipers, SAM sites and Aurora bombers.
