Time to put your rumor hats on folks, for there's allot of jibba jabba going around the net of a slimmed down Xbox 360.

Image

These pictures apparently show the guts of a new model of the Xbox 360. The important bits? The fact that for the first time the console combines the CPU and the GPU in a single chip. Oh, and it's small.

The pic above shows the board in question, with the chip part of a rumoured redesign for the Xbox 360 console, testing of which has recently been completed in China. This isn't simply a new board for the existing hardware, either; it's reportedly a total redesign of the console. Think the PS3 Slim, only...for an Xbox 360.

Now, considering the source, there's every reason to be sceptical of the images, and the info. Then again, with Natal due later this year, rebooting the 360 itself to go along with it would make a lot of sense, especially if a reduction in size could come with a reduction in cost.

What do you think? Legitimate Chinese leak, ala the PS3 Slim, or just some punks pulling a stunt?
Rumor: New Xbox 360 Model Slims Down [Update] - Xbox 360 - Kotaku

I'd love to see this happen, mainly in hope of the big M re-imaging themselves with a new mini console that would actually work. If they can get it in time to coincide with Natal for the christmas holidays then Microsoft might actually have a decent game plan for the end of the year, coupled with Reach and Fable III. Of course the source is similar to the ones for the PS3 slim, and we all know how that turned out.

Although I already got myself a 360, I would happily go about getting a slim verision if I didn't already have one. Plus I wonder how well a mini 360 would do in Japan.

Yep i read about it a while back and it seems like MS is planning a slim version of the 360 which judging by the hardware seems like a re-worked version that may fix previous issues specially because it has the CPU and GPU in a single die..

I'd be curious about if there would be less or more RROD from it? I'm thinking an on board GPU might be better, but I'm not good at understanding hardware, that's one of my weak points.

I'd prefer a slim model.

I'm hoping to get a 360 this July! :)

Is Microsoft planning to drop its overpriced Xbox 360 Memory Units in favour of more affordable USB mass storage devices? According to documentation obtained by Joystiq, the answer is yes.

Currently the only external storage solution for the Xbox 360 is the Microsoft-produced Memory Unit, a relatively expensive way to add up to 512MB of storage to your console. That could all change this spring, according to Joystiq’s information, when the Xbox 360 receives an update that will allow standard USB storage devices to function as Xbox 360 storage.

According to the documentation, the update will allow consoles to recognise USB drives from 1GB to 16GB, formatting them with an Xbox 360 system partition of 512MB, with the remainder of the space used to store game saves, DLC, Xbox Live Arcade titles, and even disc-based games, which can be played from the drive as long as you have the original disc inserted in the console.

While this seems like it could be a good way to get around paying through the nose for an overpriced Xbox 360 hard drive upgrade, Joystiq points out that only two devices can be registered to a console at a time, for a grand total of 32GB of additional storage.

If this proves to be true, it’s an interesting and cost-effective solution to add a few more gigs of storage space for those of us rapidly filling up their original Xbox 360 hard drives.

We’ve contacted Microsoft for comment on this rumour, and will update should any new information arise.

Also looks as if Microsoft are going to be giving us the opportunity to cheap out with hdd storage, although with a maximum of two drives at a total of 32gb it seems a little stingy on the big M's behalf, although at least we don't have to shell out for overpriced memory cards.

I feel as if Microsoft need to give gamers a bit more freedom with the proprietry hardware to make the machine all the more attractive. It has worked well for the PS3, so lets hope come christmas this year, Microsoft can come up with more better ideas to make the console more approachable.

maybe, the whole 360 business model seems to be built around "pay extra for everything".

But, I think I'll get me a 16GB usb stick when that update's there, the HDD (60 gb one) is getting rather filled up already.

PS3 is going really strongly now, which can only mean better products for us as the consumers. Which is why I hope the new (should it be released) slim will be another boon for microsoft, if they can make the product cheaper for the masses then that would be the best for us.

I'm guessing they are going to release some kind of special deal for the holdiays, by the new 360 slim with Natal bundled, capitalize on the family entertainment aspect of using natal as a machine to get everyone in the family playing together, release some schlocky promo pics of people looking ridiculously happy while using natal, give the 360 a new image and propel them through the next 5 years with a product that people think they really want.

If it keeps going like this the ps3 WILL pass the 360. Look at the sales. The 360 sales are slooow while the PS3 sales are increasing rapidly. Many reasons for that. First party support being an example.

The Xbox 360 may have strong third-party support with Mass Effect and Alan Wake and Left 4 Dead, but Sony America bigwig Rob Dyer reckons the rival console's first-party line-up doesn't hold a candle to what Sony's offering on PS3.

"They have very few first-party studios at Microsoft. Bungie's next Halo is the last one, Rare rarely puts out anything, you've got Peter Molyneux with his Fable stuff... but they don't have first-party development studios inside at Redmond or anywhere for that matter," Dyer told IndustryGamers, (via GamesIndustry.biz). "We do."

"So rather than putting their money behind that, they've been going to Epic or Valve or BioWare to do what they did with Mass Effect, and that's where they throw their dollars."

"We're not going to compete with Microsoft on that front," he added. "But what we have is a global business here. Our global business is bigger than 360's and will continue to get bigger than 360, and people are seeing that. We passed them in Europe and they don't even exist in Japan, and we're going to catch them and pass them here in the US as well."

Dyer said third-party console exclusives aren't going to happen "nearly as often" in the future, but that extra game content and strong advertising campaigns will swing buyers one way or the other - he used Batman: Arkham Asylum, which on PS3 included a playable Joker character, as an example.

"The PS3 version outsold the 360 version, and what we've said to [developers] is, 'if you take advantage of what the PS3 can deliver – more content on the Blu-ray disc, better graphics, being able to get more of what the player wants onto the disc – you're going to see those sales translate'."
No kidding. They need more system sellers. They should spend all that money they use for timed exclusives and build their own quality first party studios. They are depending way too much on Halo.
