If you have a good set of speakers, chances are you also have a decent amplifier, which is much more important than a shiny x-fi crystalizer.
I suppose that's why I enjoy the Crystalizer. It's a nifty feature that can sometimes help a lot with badly mixed albums as well. Being a metal fan, there's quite a few... Though not even this can make up for the damage Rasmussen did to Blind Guardian's albums (giving it the "...and justice for all" treatment :p). It works great clarifying things, though it's mostly just a subtle bass + treble boost, and it can cause slight changes in the audio. That's why I have it turned on to the point that I'd miss it if off, but don't really perceive it either.

AC97 was superseded by Intel HD, nearly 5 years ago. Which is the main reason why you don't need a soundcard anymore, unless you are a composer who needs that 0ms asio output and sixty different plugs on a front panel - in which case, you can find cards much better then what Creative offers.

Besides, once you have bit perfect output, you can't improve sound quality any more - and you can get bitperfect output on late generation ac97 anyway. Not to mention Intel HD.

Soundcards are dead animals by today, that should be by all rights extinct.
Actually, with my last Realtek chip I simply noticed much more hissing on the background when it's silent than with the X-fi. That alone is the reason why it's worth it in my opinion.

And Squall, I think the caps are exactly the problems Auzentech address. Among others. It's what the X-fi was supposed to be in the first place :) But well, Creative creates a lot of shovelware, the brand name alone (Soundblaster OMG!!1 Fatal1ty WTF!!1!) is reason enough why they can get away with it and still sell a lot. Have you heard about the X-fi Xtreme Audio btw? :dead:

yeah i love the crystalizer too on my xfi. makes a huge difference to me on my mp3s

Well eventhough it's just a lowly Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Value it's still better than the onboard on my ASUS A8NE-FM and my ASUS P5Q so sound cards do matter. Although I guess if I had to get a new card it would be some form of Xonar.

should've saved your money Schumi, quite honestly, onboard audio is better then any Value card from creative. the Audigy 2 ZX is still worth its $100+ price tag.

how about this?...this is the newest damn soundcard from creative (!@#$% them);)

Sound Blaster X-Fi is Fatal1ty's Choice for Audio!
"When I'm competing, I need top-class performance and the most realistic sound to help me know where my opponents are. Sound Blaster X-Fi really delivers for me...there is nothing faster or better."

Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel is the best-known professional gamer in the world with 38 First Place wins in eight years of tournament play.
HOW ABOUT THAT ?

The Auzentech has access to HW OpenAL and EAX5 though :p

Nah, the sound is much stronger and more balanced with the Value card than with my onboard audio.

Anyways it was just an experiement...and the way the Realtek onboard is implemented on this board and then along with the way Vista treats sound I actually needed a sound card to run my TV tuner because the Realtek refused to give it any audio.

Next time I will get something else though, most likely something from ASUS.

The tvtuner in the pc i have (gotta fix it for someone) sitting over in the corner connects to the onboard (realtek) via an AUX connector.

It connects just fine in this case as well, but either due to Vista's sound management or the way this Realtek chip is setup (it's unique to this board) my TV tuner can't get any sound. I have fiddled with it for hours, but nothing.

Ah, yeah i've had issues like that with the Vista Mixer, and sound setup.
